In October 1988, Hanis opened ‘Hanis International’; her very own models agency in Singapore - with offices in Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan. Her aim was to groom local models for the international circuit. Her business partner were Nigel and Ann Mosbergen.

In January 1992, Hanis made a mistake by inviting a shady Moroccan-born businessman Elyamani Khamis to her agency as a consultant. The agency changed its name to Hanis & Khamis Models. The agency ceased its operation in November 1992. Khamis declared himself bankrupt and was investigated for alleged fraud amounting to around $40 million.
