Trinh-Duc at Montpellier until 2014

Zbgj3.jpg

Montpellier have been given a major boost with the news that France fly-half François Trinh-Duc has extended his contract with the club until 2014.

The 25-year-old's signature is another step in securing the club's key players as he joins captain Fulgence Ouedraogo and scrum-half Julien Tomas in committing his future to MHR by adding two years to his current deal. Trinh-Duc, who has 35 Test caps, cited his eagerness to continue working with coach Fabien Galthié as the reason for inking the new contract. "I [initially] signed for only one year in the knowledge that someone would succeed Marc Lièvremont at the French national team and Fabien Galthié was in the running to replace him," Trinh-Duc told Midi Libre.

"My condition for staying was that Fabien stayed at Montpellier. Since he was not chosen as [France] selector, I took my option for two more years." "I've won regularly alongside Fabien," he continued in Midi Olympique. "He brings the skills that help me better understand the game and find solutions when things get complicated. We need that at Montpellier."

Perpignan axe manager Delmas

Perpignan have shown manager Jacques Delmas the door just four months after he took over the top job at the Catalan club.

Delmas becomes the first Top 14 coach to lose his job this season, after just ten games in the domestic league and two in the Amlin Challenge Cup. Club President Paul Goze made the announcement on Monday, explaining that the former Biarritz and Stade Français coach had failed to produce the results expected. Assistant coaches Bernard Goutta and Christophe Manas will take over at the helm. Delmas replaced long-standing coach Jacques Brunel - who is now the Italy Head Coach - at the start of the season. But the downward spiral that started at the end of the Brunel era has continued as USAP languish in the bottom half of the Top 14 standings.

With a record of seven losses in twelve matches - including five defeats in their last six starts, things are clearly not working on the Catalan coast. Defeat to the Dragons in the Amlin Challenge Cup on Thursday was the last straw. "After the latest defeat in Wales without even a losing bonus point, I am forced to recognise that Jacques Delmas's integration into our group as not happened as we had hoped," said Goze in a statement.

"I'm disappointed for the man, for whom I still hold the greatest esteem, but I was obliged to act in the interest of the club. "The difficulty for a manager to arrive alone into a team of staff and a squad already in place have prompted me to not replace Jacques Delmas and I have thus handed over the professional team to Bernard Goutta and Christophe Manas. "I have also asked the whole group not to comment on my decision but to concentrate solely on the preparation for our match on Friday against Stade Français, which is vital for USAP in the race for [European] qualification."
