Some more news on THE REVENANT box office numbers With $1.21 million earned yesterday, The Revenant has brought its domestic total to over $140.7m thus far. Once it passes the $143m-and counting total of Daddy’s Home (yes, I’ll be commenting on that later), it will be the biggest-grossing non-franchise title since The Martian back in October, for what that’s worth. In just a few weeks of wide release, the Leonardo DiCaprio survival drama has topped all but five of the movie star’s prior releases. It sits only below the $144m total of The Great Gatsby (which was in 3D), the $162m total of Django Unchained, the $164m total of Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can, and the insurmountable $292m total of Chris Nolan’s Inception as well as of course the $658m total of James Cameron’s Titanic. Of course, as I’ve noted before, what DiCaprio for much of what passes for “movie stardom” these days is that these films (and a few just below, like The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, and The Departed) were non-franchise plays that made their money very much because DiCaprio was the top-billed star. The Revenant, a 2.5 hour, uber-violent rugged period piece story was seemingly DiCaprio’s least commercial offering in some time, which made its $135 million budget almost a risk. But it thanks to strong reviews, a major awards season presence, DiCaprio’s untouchable star power, and a narrative concerning (A) how hard the film was to make and (B) that this should be the big movie star performance that finally nets DiCaprio an Oscar, it has plowed past nearly all of his prior hits. It will surely pass the totals of The Great Gatsby (by the start of the weekend), Django Unchained and Catch Me If You Can by the time it’s done. It should reach $175 million and that’s presuming it doesn’t continue to show strong legs and/or doesn’t get an Oscar bump for DiCaprio’s likely win at the end of the month. If that happens (or less likely, the film wins Best Picture), then we may see a $200m+ domestic total. In terms of “adjusted for inflation,” once it gets past $178m it’ll be DiCaprio’s third-biggest “tickets sold” grosser behind Catch Me If You Can, Inception, and Titanic. The film had $282 million worldwide as of Sunday and it may well have crossed $300m worldwide or will very soon. I’m less comfortable predicting worldwide totals, but once it gets past $353m it’ll be past everything save Titanic ($2.1b), Inception ($825m), Django Unchained ($425m), and The Wolf of Wall Street ($392m). So we can presume that it will end up as DiCaprio’s third-biggest grosser worldwide. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/#4031d59039c0

The Revenant’s Elk Dog: A Conversation with Duane Howard you have said Leonardo DiCaprio was very kind and pleasant to work with. How so? Yes, he was very kind. He really was down-to-earth and a decent guy to talk with. We sat down on set and just talked about how our days went, how our families were. When Leonardo DiCaprio accepted the Golden Globe he thanked First Nations people. What did you think of that? I got choked up, actually. UK box office update The winner: The Revenant Resisting the challenge of horny Robert De Niro and naked Zac Efron in Dirty Grandpa, Leonardo DiCaprio and the bear win it for a third week in a row, with third-weekend box-office figures of £2.28m. The Revenant’s total after 17 days is a spiffy £16.09m. That compares with £14.96m for DiCaprio’s last film, The Wolf of Wall Street, at the same stage of its run, putting The Revenant 8% ahead of the pace of the Scorsese hit. POPE FRANCIS WILL ACT IN FILM Mere days after meeting Leonardo DiCaprio, Pope Francis has decided that he too shall try acting. Coincidence? Probably. But if Pope Francis needed to be talked into acting, and there was anyone capable of doing just that, it is DiCaprio—especially considering the charm trifecta the actor reportedly laid on the Catholic leader. (In addition to speaking Italian—a feat which already requires more effort and preparation than we are capable of summoning—the future Oscar winner also gifted the pope a book of art, spoke knowledgeably about the environment, and personally handed him a check for charity. Admit it, you are getting a contact charm high from just reading this.) So whether or not the two incidents are related, DiCaprio visited Pope Francis and, days later, the pope has decided to give the whole Hollywood thing a try. Variety breaks the news on Monday, reporting that the 79-year-old will make his feature film debut by playing himself in a faith-based film titled Beyond the Sun. In addition to marking the Pope’s first acting role, the project will make history as the first time that a pope has ever appeared in a film.
