Torino 0:1 AC Milan - match report Scorer: Pato 66 (M) Alexandre Pato grabbed a decisive goal as Milan get back on track following two defeats on the trot, but relegation is becoming a real threat for the Granata. These were desperate times for both teams after two straight losses. The Rossoneri's midweek home defeat to Sampdoria not only left them four points adrift of fourth place, but also put their UEFA Cup spot under pressure. Toro had Nikola Lazetic suspended and Matteo Sereni injured, while Kaka, Pippo Inzaghi, Ronaldo, Marcos Cafu and Serginho were sidelined. Milan had not lost in Turin since November 2001, winning both their following visits. Torino had the first chance when Roberto Stellone held off Kakha Kaladze to thump the side-netting. At the other end Alberto Maria Fontana beat away a deflected Andrea Pirlo free kick, then he flew to palm Clarence Seedorf's set play out from under the bar. Another Pirlo free kick tested Fontana as he seemed to know little about the trajectory, while Seedorf's impressive scissor-kick was palmed round the near post. Paolo Maldini dribbled down the left channel for his cross to be touched on by Alberto Gilardino, but Alexandre Pato's shot was deflected over the bar. From the resulting corner a looping Alessandro Nesta header hit the roof of the net. Gilardino should have done better on the counter, but went for glory rather than rolling to the unmarked Pato. Alessandro Rosina had a great chance smothered by Kakha Kaladze's perfectly timed challenge from eight yards. At the other end Fontana did well at full stretch to smother a deflected cross for Pato that came off Marco Di Loreto. Seedorf was totally unmarked from nine yards for a right-foot sweeping shot on the volley that cracked against the underside of the crossbar from Pato's assist. Gilardino wasted another golden opportunity when one-on-one with Fontana. Milan finally broke the deadlock on 66 minutes. Gilardino gathered Seedorf's pass and with his back to goal managed to draw out the goalkeeper and swing across for Pato to prod the ball over the line. He was not in an offside position, as the Brazilian was clearly behind the ball. Pato went forward and set up Seedorf, bringing a tough save out of Fontana's outstretched leg. Toro threw on Alvaro Recoba and Nicola Ventola in a bid to get level. They went close too on 77 minutes, but Zeljko Kalac rushed out to flap the ball of Stellone's feet and Ventola fired the follow-up wide. Torino: Fontana; Diana, Natali, Di Loreto, Pisano; Rosina, Corini (Ventola 70), Grella, P Zanetti; Stellone, Di Michele (Recoba 73) Milan: Kalac; Oddo, Nesta, Kaladze, Maldini; Gattuso (Brocchi 66), Pirlo, Ambrosini; Seedorf; Pato, Gilardino Ref: Saccani

  16. Red Bull insists car is safe 22 March 2008 Red Bull Racing team bosses have insisted their car is of sound design and is safe to compete in this weekend's Malaysian Grnad Prix. The team was asked to explain itself after David Coulthard suffered a peculiar suspension failure during Friday practice. "Following David's retirement in Australia, where an incident with Massa caused significant damage to his car, David's RB4 had a track rod failure during first practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix," Red Bull boss Christian Horner explained. "It was an isolated incident, which caused him to go off the circuit at Turn 14, hit a bump and go heavily into the inside of the kerbing, causing damage to his car's front suspension. The FIA takes safety extremely seriously and wanted to understand how the failure had happened. They followed up the incident by looking at our procedures in terms of rig testing, R&D testing and proof testing, for each of our components. We've demonstrated our diligence in making sure the car is safe, they understand that and are happy with the explanation that we've given them." Technical director Adrian Newey backed up Horner adding, "Yesterday's incident on David's car was due to a track rod failure. This in turn was due to a poor bond preparation. The component therefore failed very early in its life." The FIA meanwhile is keeping a close eye on the team this weekend in case there is any repeat of the Friday incident.

Button happy despite missing Q3 Jenson Button was extremely satisfied with his Malaysian Grand Prix performance, despite narrowly missing out on a top ten place. The Honda driver lapped 0.068 seconds shy of the Q3 cut-off time on the way to 11th place. "I'm happy with P11 and to be starting on the right side of the grid for the race," Button said. "The weather was looking changeable with the risk of rain, so we ran early in both sessions to get a banker time in. My final run in the second session was on the option tyres and I'm really happy with the lap as we just missed out on going through by less than 0.1 seconds." Button said he had been struggling with the softer tyres until track conditions improved. "The main challenge was choosing between the prime and the option tyre," he said. "I was struggling to get the options to work so I was running on the primes for most of the session but pretty much everyone else was on the option tyre. "So with that much option rubber going down on the track, we had to give it a go for my last run in Q2, and we were 0.25 seconds quicker. That was as quick as the car is today and I put in a good lap, so I'm pleased with our position." Teammate Rubens Barrichello will start 14th, and felt the loss of some practice time to a gearbox fault had been costly. "It was unfortunate that we had a problem this morning with the gear selection which limited my running and therefore when you go into qualifying, you are playing catch-up all the time," he said. "However it was a good effort this afternoon and I'm happy with how our session developed to eventually finish in 14th position. It would have been nice to have more time this morning to set the car up a little better but we made the best of a difficult situation."
