James Anest, is an American operatic Bari-tenor (a baritone with the high notes of a tenor, also called a heldentenor) and actor from Bayard, Nebraska of pure Greek ancestry. He has been called “the Errol Flynn of Opera” due to his outstanding good looks, 6’3” athletic body and dashing stage presence. After graduating from high school, he was awarded a music scholarship to Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, making history as the first male student to live on the campus of this formerly all female school. He completed his studies at University of California, Northridge and has since performed baritone roles in Carmen, The Magic Flute, La Boheme, The Beggars Opera, Don Giovanni, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Die Fledermaus and Amahl and the Night Visitors in addition to concert performances and recitals. James is equally at home in musical theater and he was first cast as Emile De Becque in Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific opposite Broadway star Stephanie J. Block, despite being 20 years too young for the role. He has also played El Gallo in The Fantasticks, Danilo in The Merry Widow, Lancelot in Camelot, Lord Byron in How Do I Love Thee, Petrovich in Crime and Punishment, Gaston in Disney's stage version of Beauty and the Beast, the pirate king in Joseph Papp's adaptation of The Pirates of Penzance and has also appeared on the MTV series Next. James is currently studying with world renowned vocal coach Seth Riggs and plans to make the transition to operatic tenor roles in the near future, including the operas of Richard Wagner. with Stephanie J.
