Q: How do you remember that mythical stop you made against Robben? A: Well, it was an unexpected play. A lot of things went through my head. I thought he was going to race past me and that I wouldn’t have time to take away the ball. If I had gone out too early, we wouldn’t be here doing this interview. Or who knows (laughs). Q: Iniesta scored and you couldn’t go to celebrate with the others in la famosa piña… A: It wasn’t the time to go anywhere. I ran, I jumped up, I fell to the ground, I cried, Busquets came to hug me… It was the moment. I also had a personal moment, when I thought about how I was going to be the first one to lift up the World Cup. Q: And then Webb blew the whistle for the final. What a wonderful sound, no? A: I can’t even begin to tell you how much. I picked up the ball, Puyi came, then Arbeloa, and I entered into a state of shock and started crying… so I don’t remember it well. I do remember that Arbeloa took the ball away from me and I told him to return it to me because I wanted to keep it. I also thought about everyone who had suffered and everything we had gone through. Q: Do you remember who sent the first congratulations that you received? A: No, because I had messages on my mobile even from people that I didn’t know. Even today, when I’m out on the street, people come up to me and thank me. But something I really like is the fact that now you can go to whichever field to play and the rival fans applaud you. For example, Iniesta received an ovation from Espanyol. That’s something that touches me. Q: The final is remembered for two moments. The moment in which you lifted up the Cup, and the moment when you kissed your girlfriend. That was the icing on the cake for an incredible night. A: Well, it was also to shut some people up. Q: Then it was back to Spain. How do you remember the welcome in Madrid? A: It was four or five times better than that of the Eurocopa. Whenever I go past Gran Vía, Moncloa or the cuesta de San Vicente now, I always think about what we lived through. I have those images saved in my mind and seeing them is wonderful. Q: When you were a kid, the finals of grand events were for other national teams. Was it a goal for you to change history? A: Yes, they always talked Brazil, Germany and not much else. Let’s see if people start talking about Spain from now on. Q: What did Del Bosque bring to the team? A: Serenity and tranquility. Q: There are people who say that Vicente reflects the spirit of the group more than Luis. A: Luis is a 10 and Vicente is a 10. The group was appreciative that Del Bosque made clear from the beginning that he came to continue something that the previous míster had begun constructing, that he wasn’t going to tear anything apart. The proof is there. He did add three or four finishing touches.

© UNAMADRIDISTA Q: There were difficult moments throughout the tournament, especially for you, for a non-sports related issue – your relationship with Sara Carbonero. Did you feel that you had a target on your back? A: Yes, yes, yes, I felt that. I have no problems in saying that because I’m a sincere person. They were looking for morbo and bringing up things that weren’t at all related. It was something that caused me a lot of regret because it was something illogical. Q: You can send everyone a Christmas message like the one from “The Times” accusing you of harming the team for your relationship with Sara. A: No, I don’t have to say anything. Time will see justice served and so we don’t have to talk anymore about this. Good always triumphs. Q: How did the “conjura in the cricket club” change history, before the last and decisive group stage game against Chile? A: It’s something that we’ve always done, it’s just that on this occasion, people found out about it. On days before games, we all get together in a room and behind the doctor’s back we eat croissants, rolls, chocolate…. From the time that I’ve been on this team, we’ve never had so many players together in one room to talk, to comment on anecdotes… it was a moment in which I said to myself, “there’s something here, something is brewing here.” Q: Then you won against Portugal and were in the quarterfinals once more. It was no longer a curse after the Eurocopa. A: We faced Paraguay. In theory, it wasn’t such a strong rival, but it was one of those days where things don’t go well, when you don’t have a good feeling, and you know you’re going to suffer. And that’s how it was. It was a tricky team, and to add to that, the referee was a disaster. Q: The team eliminated Paraguay, Germany and qualified for the final. Arbeloa said you shocked him by telling him on the way to the stadium that “estoy cagao.” Did you really have such a bad time? [Wasn't this before the Chilean game?] A: (Laughs). But that’s a good thing. I don’t like it when I’m calm. When you’re nervous, preoccupied and unsettled, you pay more attention to things. But it wasn’t just before the final, it was before all of the games. The day I was most relaxed was the day against Switzerland, and we lost. Q: Who was the last person you called before playing in the final? A: I spoke with my girlfriend, which I always do.

Reid: Rooney's a dangerous animal West Bromwich Albion's Steven Reid is wary of facing Manchester United's "dangerous animal" Wayne Rooney on Saturday. West Brom will be without key defenders Gabriel Tamas and Gonzalo Jara through suspension when the Barclays Premier League leaders visit on Saturday. As a result, manager Roberto Di Matteo could be forced to deploy midfielder Reid as a right-back for the game against United - putting the Irish man directly in the firing line to mark Rooney. "Maybe Rooney's not hit the heights he did last season but he's a dangerous animal," Reid was quoted in the Sun as saying. "It's only a matter of time that he scores from open play - he's still one of the best players in the world." Central defender Tamas is out for three games after being sent off against Blackburn, while right-back Jara has picked up five yellow cards and will be suspended for the United clash.

Rooney: I'd like to be a manager Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has already started planning for life as a manager. Sir Alex Ferguson has often reported receiving hints from Rooney about his United team selections, advice he usually ignores. However, it seems the 25-year-old is serious when considering what to do when his own playing days are over. In an extensive MUTV interview with former United European Cup winner Paddy Crerand, Rooney confirmed he has started to take his coaching badges, and has no fears about beginning a new career on the bottom rung of the ladder. "I would like to be a manager. That would be my ambition when I finish playing," said Rooney. "You see the players who have played for Sir Alex and gone on to be good managers. I am hoping to do that one day. "But I wouldn't like to follow the manager here, or start at an Everton or Manchester United. "I want to learn something about the lower leagues and build a reputation that way rather than just jumping into a big club. "It is not right if someone goes in and gets a big job with no experience. There are managers who have worked for years trying to get that." Rooney also reflected on England's "terrible" World Cup campaign and his attack on the national team's supporters immediately after the goalless draw with Algeria in Cape Town. "The emotions were high because we weren't winning," he said. "Our fans were booing after 10 minutes. That is what I was saying. It was disappointing." In addition, he also reveals that on the day four years earlier when Cristiano Ronaldo was condemned for trying to get Rooney sent off in Gelsenkirchen, the England man had been guilty of a very similar offence earlier in the game when his then team-mate took a dive. "I went up to the referee and said he had dived and he should be booked. No one saw that," he shrugged. "Everyone saw mine because it was a red card." Rooney still misses Ronaldo now and cannot believe the Portugal superstar is not among the three nominees for this year's Ballon D'Or. United will not get him back though, which means Rooney must take the scrutiny of his own career, and the present failure to score a goal in open play since March. "I want to score in every game," he said. "But the most important thing is for the team to win. "We have been doing well since I came back and I know I will start scoring goals again, I have no worries about that."

Rooney: I was bang out of order Wayne Rooney now accepts that he was wrong to demand assurances about Manchester United's future before signing a new contract. Although the 25-year-old is still waiting for his first goal in open play since March, he has at least begun to regain the form that suffered so badly at the World Cup and beyond. Rooney seems to have made a fresh start since that tumultuous October week when he announced his intention to leave and claimed he was worried about the direction United were heading in. A sensational six days ended with Rooney committing his future to the Old Trafford outfit for another five-and-a-half years, 24 hours after a visit to his street in Prestbury by 30 masked men. He now looks back at that period and accepts mistakes were made. "I went to see the manager and David Gill and asked them for answers," he recalled in an exclusive MUTV interview with former United European Cup-winner Paddy Crerand. "Now I realise it has nothing to do with me, but I wanted to make sure it was the right thing for me to do. "I got the answers in the end but looking back it was probably wrong of me to do that." Rooney did not commit himself to Old Trafford until after a visit from a hooded gang of around 30 to his plush mansion in Prestbury. It was an alarming evening for Rooney, who could not even venture out to tell his "visitors" that agreement had already been reached. "I looked out and saw 30 blokes with their hoods up. I wasn't going to invite them in for tea," he recalled. "But I didn't even think about where I was going to go. There was no way I would have gone to Manchester City and there was more chance of me going to City than Liverpool." "I understood some of the fans were disappointed and felt let down. But it was just one of those things I had to get right. "Thankfully I have sorted it out now. I have made the right decision and made myself happy."

Guardiola close to new Barca deal Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola is close to agreeing a new contract with the club according to reports in the Spanish media. With Guardiola's current contract due to expire at the end of the season, the latest revelations come after weeks of intense speculation surrounding the 39-year-old's future. Despite rumours of an imminent move to England, sports daily AS has now claimed that the former Spain international will put pen to paper and sign a new deal within weeks, while Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo believes an agreement will be reached at some point during the next few days. Sources in Spain have hinted that Barcelona president Sandro Rosell wants to hand Guardiola a five-year contract, although the Nou Camp legend who has won a plethora of domestic, European and global titles with Barca, is said to prefer a rolling year-on-year deal. Manchester United have been heavily linked with Guardiola who is seen as an ideal replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson he eventually calls time on his Old Trafford reign. However, Rosell has other ideas, feeling that Guardiola can go on and become Barcelona's equivalent of when the wily Scot. "Guardiola knows that he has an offer on the table. He knows that he can renew for two years plus another three. "I like things a lot. I do not think that there are any problems, I would like to see him become like Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and Franz Beckenbauer at Bayern Munich. I can see him being president of this club," Rosell told AS. Already through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona currently lead the La Liga table by two points from Real Madrid and will continue their league campaign against Levante on Sunday.

Real Madrid have rejoined Juventus and Tottenham in the race to sign Liverpool right back Glen Johnson after Jose Mourinho fell out with Sergio Ramos, according to Marca. The Spanish daily have revealed the Madrid pair fell out in the aftermath of their 5-0 humiliation against Barcelona, when Mourinho wanted to be the only one to speak to the press. However, his vice-captain felt it necessary to apologise for a late red card after a tackle on Lionel Messi, angering his manager who wanted his players to keep quite for 48 hours. With ‘the Special One’ keen to continue his Real revolution, Johnson is now back on his radar despite a poor start to the season with Liverpool. Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson criticised the former West Ham man after a string of less than impressive performances and Johnson is now unsettled at Anfield. With rumours of Madrid’s interest earlier on this year surfacing, he then took the decision to start learning to speak Spanish, prompting even more speculation. And with news that Rod Fanni’s proposed move to Marseille has fallen through, Liverpool are prepared to cash in on their defender and bring the Frenchman to Anfield in a cut price deal.

Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Mancini in training ground bust-up Emmanuel Adebayor is almost certain to leave Manchester City at the earliest opportunity after his relationship with Roberto Mancini finally boiled over this week. The Togo striker had to be restrained by players and staff after bursting into the Italian's training ground office with proof of a torn muscle, an injury Mancini had initially brushed off as nothing more than a dead leg. Former Arsenal man Adebayor was dismayed to his boss thought he was feigning injury. He hasn't featured for City since coming on as a substitute in the defeat by Sunderland last month and claimed on the eve of transfer deadline day that he would welcome a move away. 'It all kicked off between them,' a City source told the News of the World. 'There is nothing worse than a manager accusing a player of feigning an injury. 'Adebayor might not be playing well, but he would never be so unprofessional. He was furious.' This week's incident is not the first time the pair have clashed. Adebayor again had to be calmed by City staff after he was dropped from the side on the opening day of the season at Tottenham. He is one in a long line of players who were bought in by former boss Mark Hughes and have struggled to adapt since the Welshman was replaced by Mancini almost a year ago. Real Madrid are keen on Adebayor, with Jose Mourinho making tentative approaches in the summer.

We are proud to have gathered 5,000 people on the stands today. I hope we can thank them by winning a title at the end of the campaign." "Kaka is proving to be a great player. We get along very well and I'm sure he will bring us many glory days because, after all, Kaka is Kaka." "I wish the New Year to bring us health so as to keep working and to bring us joy. What matters is that we continue to work, but I wish we win a title too."

Roberto Mancini Roberto Mancini (born 27 November 1964) is an Italian football manager, formerly an international player and current manager of English Premier League team Manchester City. As a player he was best known for his time at Sampdoria, where he played more than 550 league matches, and helped them win the Serie A league title, four Coppa Italias and the Cup Winners Cup, whilst being capped 36 times by Italy. In the latter days of his playing career he was an assistant apprentice to Sven Goran Eriksson at Lazio. Following the end of his accomplished playing career he moved into management and achieved success at both ends of the footballing spectrum. He began his managerial career at the deep end with a cash stricken Fiorentina at only 35 years old and managed to win a Coppa Italia but left with Fiorentina sliding towards inevitable bankruptcy. A few months later he then took over as manager at Lazio, where again, he inherited financial constraints and was forced to lose big players but still managed to win another Coppa Italia, a UEFA Cup semi-final, whilst securing a lucrative Champions League place with limited resources during his two season tenure. Personality and reputation Mancini is well known to be a tough trainer as manager, a reputation heightened at Manchester City. This has led to his training methods being criticised by some players[46] and fitness coaches, especially Raymond Verheijen who is a personal fitness coach for Craig Bellamy.[47] Nor is Mancini afraid to stamp his authority with rebellious players who are unhappy or are not performing and has previously stated "If a top player is not happy then it's better to go".[48][49] It has been reported, although vehemently disputed, that Mancini has had frosty relationship with Craig Bellamy,[50] club doctor Jamie Murphy[51] and Emmanuel Adebayor[52] who was unhappy at not getting first team football. Manchester City players have previously revealed Mancini's ocsasional "hairdryer treatment" at half-time if he feels his team are not playing well.[53][54] Personal life Mancini has been married for nearly 20 years to his wife Federica and have a daughter and two sons, Filippo and Andrea who have both played in the Internazionale youth ranks where Filippo managed to play 10 minutes in a single Coppa Italia match for Inter. Both of his sons have at one point been a part of Manchester City's youth set-up - under the reign of Sven-Göran Eriksson Filippo trained with the City academy for several months of the 2007-08 season, while Andrea was signed by his father for the Manchester City under-21 Elite Development Squad in November of 2010 after being released from Bologna.

Could Van Persie leave Arsenal? After an injury-stricken time at Arsenal, Robin van Persie could end his time in England by moving to Serie A giants Juventus. According to TuttoSport, the Turin club are weighing up their options in order to bolster their strikeforce, and have set their sights on the Arsenal targetman. Juventus sporting director Giuseppe Marotta believes that the Dutchman will fit in well at the club, and with options few and far between, Marotta believes that Van Persie will be a good alternative to Wolfsburg Edin Dzeko, who has been reported to be linked to a big-money move from the Bundesliga to Barclays Premier League side Manchester City. The Bianconeri could offer Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger €27 million for his star striker, but are also considering giving the Frenchman Felipe Melo in a player-plus-cash deal in order to lower the financial burden on their budget. The Frenchman is known to have an interest in the Brazilian, and missed out on signing him two summers ago when the player decided on a more financially lucrative move to Serie A instead.

Del Piero: I believe in Juve Juventus stalwart Alessandro Del Piero has given his squad's hardworking attitude the thumbs-up and believes they can win the title. Del Piero also believes that Juventus's prudent recruitment strategy during the summer transfer window is paying off now in the Bianconeri's Serie A campaign. The 36-year-old said to his club's website: "I hope we can continue on this path in 2011." "I wish for our position to be consolidated which will allow us to reach a good position by season's end. "We have the possibility to do well, with a bit of luck and concentration. "The correct player choices, coupled with hard work has brought us here. As a team, we have a lot of enthusiasm to help overcome any difficulties which face us. Working together, we have been able to get good results and hope to keep on going." Del Piero also gave his team credit for their attitude during their clash against AC Milan in late October. "We came into the Milan match under intense pressure, as we had several key injuries prior to and during the match. But we were able to sacrifice ourselves and gain a great victory," he concluded. The Turin side defeated their Milanese rivals 2-1 in a nail-biting contest.

Hodgson plays down Gerrard injury Roy Hodgson has allayed concerns over Steven Gerrard after the Liverpool captain appeared to sustain a leg injury against Wolves. The Reds midfielder was seen clutching his calf on Wednesday night as Hodgson's side suffered a 1-0 defeat at Anfield. Gerrard had been out of action since November after sustaining an injury while on international duty with England, and appeared to struggle in the latter stages of the clash. But Hodgson told Liverpool's official website: "Luckily it's cramp, which wasn't good, but unfortunately because we were losing and because I was desperate to do something different and freshen up the team, I'd used up all my substitutes. "Had I not done so, I would have taken him off." After slipping to 12th in the table with their latest defeat, Liverpool face another test against in-form Bolton at Anfield on New Year's Day. And Hodgson admits the demanding fixture list means he may be forced to make changes to his side. "We've got some chances to freshen the team up and we'll have to continually do that anyway because there are so many games coming up," he said. "With games every three days, you cannot expect them to play even if you wanted to."

iverpool vs Wolves Player Ratings Wolverhampton Wanderers clocked their first away win this season as they beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield. Liverpool Pepe Reina - 6 Had a quiet game and it seems like confidence is severely lacking in the Liverpool camp. Glen Johnson - 6 Nothing new, impressive going forward but his defensive abilities remain questionable. Sotirios Kyrgiakos - 5.5 He put his fellow defenders under unnecessary pressure. Martin Skrtel - 6.5 A "pillar" at the back, considering the performance of the other three Liverpool defenders. Paul Konchesky (Off 74') - 6 Another mediocre performance from Konchesky - he was caught napping too many times. Dirk Kuyt - 6.5 A hardworking performance but it didn't get Liverpool past the line. Steven Gerrard - 6 The skipper was back - Liverpool's best ever player according to his teammates - but he couldn't inspire them to a win this time. Lucas - 7 He coped intelligently in what was a very crowded midfield. Raul Meireles (Off 73') - 6 He had a golden opportunity to open his Liverpool account against Wolves but found their keeper in too good a form. Fernando Torres - 5 Liverpool is too dependent on him - the man who has yet to find an answer for his poor form since the World Cup. His body language once again tells the story. David Ngog (Off 62') - 5 Dropped too deep, leaving Torres outnumbered and isloated at times. Subs Ryan Babel (On 62') - 6 Came on and showed some urgency and desire to get points from the game. Joe Cole (On 73') - 6 He won't win over any Liverpool fans with that type of display. Fabio Aurelio (On 74') N/A Wolves Wayne Hennessey - 6.5 Did his talking on the pitch - proved to his manager that he is the team's number one. Ronald Zubar - 6.5 Tireless display from Zubar - the right back seemed to be everywhere. Richard Stearman - 7 Showed great awareness to danger as Torres fired another blank. Christoph Berra - 7 Forged a great partnership with Stearman and gave Liverpool'sforward very little space to work with. George Elokobi - 6.5 A strong no nonsense shift from the left back. Kevin Foley - 6.5 Tracked the midfield runners impressively. Stephen Ward (Off 78') - 7 He was the one making runs forward to support Wolves' lone striker - he got his reward with the goal from a tidy finish. Nenad Milijas - 6.5 The Serbian complimented Foley well in the middle of the park making things very uncomfortable for the Liverpool's stuttering midfield. Stephen Hunt - 6.5 Hunt whipped in mouth watering crosses from the right flank, but unfortunate there wasn't enough Wolves bodies in the box to take advantage off. Matt Jarvis (Off 89') - 7 The man with two goals and two assists for Wolves this season put in another decent performance. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake - 8 Hardworker through and through, a role model for youngsters. Subs Steven Fletcher (On 78') A tricky customer to mark. David Edwards (On 89') Came on to kill time for Mick McCarthy to get the win.
