So the initial iteration anyone could change the topic thumbnail and it was chaos. So we made it so people over 1k posts or so could do it, still constantly changing. Then we made it mods/admins and its at least more stable now (even though we all don't agree with which icon should be the default). I agree that we should keep them updated though, just need to find a good balance which is the tough part.

There is no way at the moment, we have considered a "gallery" type feature, but I worry it will take away from the conversations in the threads as people will just come for the images and leave. Thoughts?

They are stored on instagrams servers so we cannot search them unfortunately.

Ok finally back at home so I can look at all this stuff. So I could not reproduce the issue, is it still a problem? What OS/browser are you using? And you are still able to see the full size, just click on the image and click either the magnifying glass or the two little squares next to it (100% zoom).

Im out of town until Tues. I will try to take a look later next week. Ususally there is a delay, like you upload the avatar and it can take a min or two to update. Regarding the blurryness, we convert them to MP4 to save significant bandwidth. You avatar looks fine right now but it may be a little less quality then the original gif.
