Outspoken Heidi Klum makes it work for 8th season on "Project Runway" http://www.denverpost.com/rss/ci_15625162?source=rss After all these years of modeling designer clothes and of judging wannabe designers on "Project Runway," Heidi Klum has become very particular about her likes and dislikes. "Sometimes I see our designers do things," the supermodel says, "and I'm like: Really? That's what you came up with? You're not supposed to make clothes. You're supposed to make fashion!" Klum wasn't always so outspoken. In the early seasons of "Project Runway," the reality/competition show on which she is host, judge and executive producer, she tended to hold back. "I was maybe a little more shy," she says. "Now I say what I think." So much so that fellow judge Nina Garcia recently suggested that Klum has morphed into the show's "mean" judge. "Gosh, that's not good if that's true," Klum says. "I say positive things when I see something positive. I give compliments to the designers who I think deserve it. But when there are things that I dislike, I tell them. But I'm not purposely mean." It's just that her expectations are higher, she says, the same way viewers demand more from the show every year. "That's what keeps us on our toes," she says. We chatted last week with Klum about Season 8 of "Project Runway," which begins at 7 tonight on Lifetime. Q: What is your favorite part of launching a new season? A: Every time, I'm intrigued to see how the designers are. We never really know what they're made out of when we do the casting. The people come in, and they bring their clothes. But have they really made those clothes? Did someone help them with this? How long did they spend on the garment they're showing? It shows pretty much in the first two episodes who has a lot of talent and who kind of slid into this thing. Q: What's the most significant change in Season 8? A: We have 30 more minutes now. It's going to be 90 minutes. So if, say, one of the designers has a fight with someone, that will be taking more space up in the show. Or if someone has trouble sewing something, we will follow that story. Sometimes the Q&A is really interesting. Or when we're sitting and doing our chats in the director's chairs without the designers, sometimes it is so intense, we might show more of that than usual. So it's really going to be the same as what people already know, just more of it. Q: What do you think of this season's designers? Anyone in particular to watch for? A: I never love to give too much away. But I think you can see five or six designers stand out. We have one designer who always wears very over-the-top clothes. He always is very funny. We always have a chuckle when we see him coming. There's another who is very opinionated, and she basically never stops talking. Ever! We start rolling our eyes. The clothes sort of speak for themselves, too. You don't have to speak about it for an hour. We have a great group of people who are not just talented but also fun to watch. I think it would be boring if they were as quiet as mice. Q: How do you keep the show fresh after so many seasons? A: It is hard. But there is always something new happening. For example, we have one challenge that I'm very proud of. I bumped into (London-based milliner) Philip Treacy at the Oscars, and I said, "Why don't you come and do 'Project Runway?' We've never had a hat challenge." So he brought, like, 15 of his wildest, craziest avant-garde hats, and each designer got to choose a hat and design something that goes with it. Q: Each season, something embarrassing inevitably happens on the runway. Last season, Ping's model's butt was exposed on the runway. As a model, have you experienced a mishap like that? A: I've never really had crazy things happen to me where my butt was out. Well, on the runway for Victoria's Secret, my butt is out all the time! But nothing that was embarrassing, like I would fall or trip. Q: Did you always have a passion for fashion? A: In my school, my friends and my teachers were always looking at me funny when I was breaking out certain outfits. I was always different in terms of the way I would dress. I was always a little out there. I started a sewing class in school, and I would make clothes for my Barbies. If I had not started as a model, I would have gone to design school. That's been my passion for a long time.

"I was always different" http://www.bettyconfidential.com/ar/ld/a/h...-different.html Heidi Klum fans, get your sewing kits out and some fresh new fabrics because Project Runway is coming back to Lifetime July 29th with its eighth season. And this time around there will be more kooky couture competitions than ever before. As a judge on the show, Heidi is used to putting the contestants through some seriously difficult challenges. But what obstacles has the 37-year-old knockout faced in her own life? We found out! “I went swimming with sharks in a cage," Heidi tells BettyConfidential. “It was for a Discovery Channel segment, and I’m not the best swimmer. I’m also not a fan of sharks.” However, Heidi put her fear aside and took the plunge. “I learned to scuba dive a few days before. I remember being surrounded by fish guts and I kept seeing fins dipping in and out of the water around the boat. I don’t know why but I jumped in with the camera crew. After I got out and took off my mask, they had to re-film me almost 10 times because I was freaking out and cursing!” Heidi wasn’t always a brave shark-diving woman of power. In fact, when she was a child she often felt insecure about her propensity to play dress-up. A surprisingly commonplace emotion for the Amazonian glamour goddess the public sees her as today. “People in my school, my teachers, even my friends looked at me funny. I was always different because of how I dressed in such an otherwise casual school.” Instead of hiding from the differences between Heidi and her demurely dressed classmates, she embraced her burgeoning desire to be creative with clothes. “I was always into fashion," she tells us. “I started with taking sewing classes in school. If I hadn’t started modeling I would have gone to design school. I even made clothes for my Barbies with my mom. I was always a bit out there.” She calls it “out there.” We call it a creative calling. These days Heidi has no reason for insecurity, or time. She is a working mother of four who always looks stunning for her husband, Seal. How does she do it? “You must be organized and narrow things down,” she says. "Start with your closet and get rid of everything that doesn’t work or that’s too 'mumsy' or slouchy. Get rid of everything frumpy and keep only things that always work so you don’t have to take so much time.” Time is certainly of the essence when it comes to the upcoming season of Project Runway. Contestants are under the gun to produce premium fashion pieces in what feels like nanoseconds. In addition to creating the garments, Heidi admits she’s judging their own personal styles as well. “I like to see what they’re wearing on top of what they’re designing,” she says. "Some of them dress over-the-top. I always get a chuckle out of this one contestant. The group is opinionated and strong as a whole.” Sounds like the cast is just like their lovely hostess. Is there anything this brazen supermodel/stylista won’t do? “I would never jump out of an airplane,” she says. We won’t hold that against the lovely Heidi Klum. After all, she’s a killer couture shark.

http://news.dphotographer.co.uk/news/exhib...tion-by-rankin/ Rankin blurs the boundaries of fashion, photography and fine art in Painting Pretty Pictures, a collection of painterly studies of feminine beauty. Using digital retouching as a tool for artistic effect, stunning nudes of some of the world’s top models, including Yasmin Le Bon, Heidi Klum and Lily Cole, are transformed into apparent oil paintings. Always keen to explore the limits of his chosen medium, Rankin reframes the debate surrounding the use of digital image manipulation, creating a new hyperreal aesthetic that merges fantasy and reality. With Gerhard Richter amongst his inspirations, Rankin departs from his trademark style, creating images which seem almost classical through the use of the latest imaging technologies. Painting Pretty Pictures will run from 30th July – 29th August at Annroy Gallery, Rankin’s own Kentish Town gallery space. The book is available from all good book stores and via http://www.turnaround-uk.com, priced £25.00.

Heidi Klum discusses the paparazzi http://celebritybabyscoop.com/2010/07/15/heidi-klum Hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum, the popular reality series Project Runway is set to hit the small screen on Thursday, July 29. With two Primetime Emmy nominations under their belt - including Outstanding Host for the model mom-of-four - Project Runway kicks off its eighth season with guest judge Selma Blair, 17 contestants and 90 minutes of fabulous fashion mayhem. During a conference call with Celebrity Baby Scoop, the 37-year-old German beauty gave us a glimpse inside the upcoming season of Project Runway including a "very flamboyant" competitor and a female participant who "doesn't stop talking." The model mom also opened up about her kids - Leni, 6, Henry, 4 1/2, Johan, 3 1/2, and Lou, 9 months - and the not-so-comfortable "stink eye" she gets from other moms at the playground when the paparazzi are present. Do the paparazzi drive you nuts? HK: "I wouldn't say they drive me nuts all the time. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. It always depends on the day and where we are and what we're doing. It definitely is a little bit not-so-convenient when you're just doing normal things. I understand the purpose of them when you go to an event and you're on the red carpet. The press is there to document and show people what you're doing. But I think that when you're out with your family.... you're at the park, and then you get all the stink eye from all the other moms! I just think 'Really why is this happening? Why are all these people here and taking photos of our children which is really putting us in an inconvenience?!' The other moms always give me the stink eye, and then I feel bad. So half of the time I will just leave and go somewhere else. You don't feel too good about those moments when you get stink eye from all the other moms. And the thing is, we don't understand half of the time what is so interesting about the same photos of us at the park. My children are just like other children too and they love going to the park." What do you tell your kids about the paparazzi? HK: "It's hard to explain! Thank goodness they haven't asked that much about it yet. I haven't been in the situation yet where I have to explain. They look and they see people taking photos, but they don't really ask too much about it. They're still little and I hopefully still have a little bit more time to figure out exactly how to explain to them." Are your older kids into fashion? Do they have a strong opinion about what they wear? HK: "Some do and some don't. Johan doesn't care so much about what he's wearing. Henry is definitely very opinionated about what he wears. He changes clothes all the time. He loves costumes and he is very particular, even with his pajamas. They have to be all the way down - if they're bunched up, he hates that. He's very, very particular about his clothes. And Leni loves dresses and being a girlie girl. She hasn't really gone beyond pink. She actually came to the runway one day and she looked at the fashion show. She wasn't too impressed because it wasn't girlie enough. It was too sophisticated, maybe, and there wasn't enough pink in the clothes so she didn't love it so much." How do you manage your busy career and family? HK: "Yes I go to work, but I also have my down time. I really enjoy being in the city and we do so many fun things here, like going to the theater. Yesterday we went to Blue Man Group. We went to Marry Poppins, to the ballet, to the water park, to the splish splash park that is outside of Manhattan. We go to the Statue of Liberty. There's so many fun things that you can do here. If I were working everyday, that would be hard. So I'm fortunate that I can still do lots of fun things with the family. But all those things need to be planned - I've just learned to be a good planner, I guess." Why has the show expanded to a 90-minute format? HK: "I think people wanted to see more. We got a lot of letters. People would always say to us, 'Why did you make this decision? We don't understand why this person had to go or this person.' Heidi adds, "For example, today we have an Elimination Day. It's going to go on four or five hours. On the show it only has 10-15 minutes. So if there is a very special decision day, when the judges might not agree with one another or something really happens, now we have the freedom to show certain things much longer than we ever could before." On guest judge Selma Blair. HK: "She is definitely considered someone who is a beautiful woman, a style icon. She was a great judge. I didn't know how funny she was. I only know her from movies, but when she was sitting there, she was hilarious." Who would be your dream guest judge on Project Runway? HK: "I've said it before, but our First Lady would be amazing to have as a guest judge. That would be my No. 1 dream come true is if Michelle Obama was a guest judge. I think she's super hip and cool and super fashionable and I think she would be absolutely amazing to have." -- Project Runway premieres on Thursday, July 29 at ET/PT on Lifetime.

New interview with the London Evening Standard: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/lifestyle/ar...ms-my-london.do Heidi Klum's My London Hannah Nathanson 09.07.10 Model Heidi Klum lives it up at Nobu and the Soho Hotel and goes native in Brick Lane and Columbia Road... Home is… Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Where do you stay in London? I love London's boutique hotels as they're more homely and often in quaint areas. The Soho Hotel is really cool and discreet, plus it's very central. What was the last play you saw in London? On An Average Day. My friend Kyle MacLachlan was in it, along with Woody Harrelson. What advice would you give a tourist? Get an Oyster card and don't just stay in Central London. Head to Columbia Road Flower Market and Portobello Road on Saturdays. Which shops do you rely on? Selfridges, where I can get everything; Topshop at Oxford Circus for the latest trends; Cocomaya in Connaught Street for tea and chocolates; Dover Street Market for one-of-a-kind designs and vintage; and Harrods because it's such a landmark. What's the best meal you've had in London? At Aqua in Argyll Street. It's two restaurants in one: Japanese and Spanish tapas and the food is excellent. What's your earliest London memory? I stayed with a family for three weeks as an exchange student. That was the first time I had ever seen, or eaten, a pomegranate. What are your guilty pleasures? I love jewellery. I collect things from all over the world. Oh, and Nobu – I could eat there all the time. What would you do as Mayor for the day? Offer everyone free ice cream and a tour through the whole of Buckingham Palace. What's your life philosophy? Having fun, being a good wife and raising children who will have a positive influence in the world. What was the last album you downloaded? My husband Seal's new album. It's called VI Commitment and it's sexy, gentle, fun, dancey and soulful. I am his biggest fan. What makes you laugh? My husband, who can mimic anyone. What are you up to at the moment? I am with all our children in New York filming the eighth season of Project Runway. We love being in New York, it's so versatile and the kids like looking at everything. It's very different for them in that way; in LA we drive everywhere. Which is your favourite London street for shopping? Brick Lane as the fashion is really diverse. Who are your heroes? My parents are pretty cool, especially my mum who's up for anything. She has always been there for me, helping with the little ones while I'm at work. What do you most like wearing? My wedding band, I never take it off. I am a sucker for romance and belonging to my beautiful husband. What's the most romantic spot in London? An evening picnic on Parliament Hill, overlooking the City of London. Which is your favourite London pub? The Hill Bar on Haverstock Hill is unpretentious and does a great Sunday lunch. What are your favourite London discoveries? I'm a real foodie, so Borough Market in Southwark; Greenwich Market for retro and antique furnishings; and Richmond Park – it's hard to believe such a beautiful park exists in London. Tell me something I don't know about London. I heard that the area Elephant and Castle was originally named after a Spanish princess from Castille, whose title la Infanta de Castilla' sounded like elephant and castle, so the name stuck. Where were the last places you visited? We always rent a beautiful house in Aspen, Colorado, over Christmas. In May, we went to our house right by the beach in Careyes, Mexico. Last August we went to Hawaii, which has great beaches for kids. What do you wear to the beach? The tinier the bikini the better. Depending on where we are in the world, I may skip the top altogether. What do you most like doing on the beach? The kids bring lots of sand toys, and we spend the day there. Nothing beats a bikini, flip-flops, a straw hat and a little dress. I'm a total beach bum. How do you prepare for the beach? I'm always beach ready!

According to Variety, Heidi has signed on to produce another new show: "Seriously Funny Kids" http://www.variety.com/article/VR111802123...d=4027&cs=1 Mother of four Heidi Klum is on the hunt for a few more "Seriously Funny Kids." Klum has partnered with LMNO Prods. to produce the show, which is about to be shopped to the networks. LMNO is well-versed in kids-themed reality shows having produced CBS' Bill Cosby revival of "Kids Say the Darndest Things," "Seriously Funny Kids" will go on location to where the kids are and document their reactions to various scenarios. "It's time for the family reality show to come back," said LMNO topper Eric Schotz, who's exec producing with Klum and Desiree Gruber. "And Heidi is funny. But it's not 'Kids Say the Darndest Things' -- that was Bill Cosby-centric, and this is kid-centric."
