As news of Britney Spears's latest problems became public, horrified family and friends watched the drama unfold along with the rest of the world. "It was very upsetting yesterday, just worrying about it all day," says Britney's aunt, Linda Brandon-Kjos. "We're all just hoping and praying she's fine. She's a sweet, sweet girl and people aren't seeing that side of her." "When she was younger, she had her friends, her cousin and for the longest time, she had [ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake]," continues Seal. "Now, she has nobody." "All I can say is that Britney is a very sick girl," says another family source. "The tragic thing is that Britney genuinely loves her children and would never knowingly put them in harm's way. Her mental instability is getting in the way of her making proper judgment and it's extremely unfortunate. Her family's taking this situation very seriously though. I just hope people can respect the fact that she needs help and keep the harsh criticisms to themselves."

Back home, Britney Spears spent the early part of Saturday with dad Jamie after being released from Cedars-Sinai hospital. Already stripped of all custody and visitation until at least Jan. 14, she is unlikely to lose visitation rights permanently because "it's not usually considered in the best interests of the children," says Lynn Soodik, a certified family law specialist and practicing family law attorney in Los Angeles. A father's nightmare took a turn for the worst. After keeping watch of his daughter at Cedars-Sinai hospital, Britney Spears's dad Jamie Spears broke into tears shortly after her discharge Saturday morning. Spears was able to accept visitors during her stay, and Dr. Phil McGraw – whom Jamie considers "a god," the source says – advised her father while at the hospital. He told Spears that his daughter's release was "one of the worst decisions that could have been made."

Britney Spears was hospitalized late Thursday night after the pop star locked herself in a room with one of her children at her L.A. home and refused to hand him over to ex-husband Kevin Federline. Spears, who has visitation rights with the kids, was scheduled to give the boys over to Federline at 7 p.m. Thursday. A bodyguard for Federline arrived to pick up the boys at the designated time, but Spears refused to relinquish her sons, according to a source.
