Let's kick off 2023 with a new game This will follow the same principle of "The Cover Or The Original?" but it will be much more general. For each round we will face two different versions of the same song. But it doesn't have to be the original vs a cover version. It can be 2 different covers, none being the original; or it can be an early career version vs a late career version by the same artist... or the studio recording vs a live performance... or two different live performances... you name it! It's all valid as long as it is the same song. Same as in "The Cover Or The Original", the next participant will choose which version they prefer …

We have a thread for guitarists, bassists and singers... But we were lacking one for the rhythmic base! Those who keep the rhythm and the tempo, the backbone of any Rock, Pop, Funk, Soul, Blues, Jazz, etc band you can think of. We were missing on the drummers! Not anymore! It's time to give recognition to those who create magic with the rhythm behind the drum set (and sometimes other percussions)! So I invite to post your favorite drummers here! I'll start with one from my own country and without a doubt one of the best drummers EVER: Mr. Gabriel Parra from Los Jaivas Same so…

  5. Well, the title pretty much says it all: those songs everybody seems to lose their minds over or those that are considered timeless classics but you just can't stand or simply don't like. I'll start with: Still Loving You - Scorpions Maybe it's because I used to listened to a radio that abused too much of this song and would program it like everyday. Or maybe it's just that I find it too cheesy? Thing is this songs is regarded as one of THE power ballads and I just hate it

Often and unfairly forgotten, the bass is a fundamental part of any band and it plays one of the most important roles: it defines the harmony while also giving the low end and it also helps setting the rhythmic feel. So lets post those great bass players that go beyond the basics of what the bass should do. Those who deliver creative lines that have their own life within the song. I'll start with sir Paul McCartney, and the isolated bass track of the Abbey Road Medley (from 10:00 to 13:08 is George Harrison playing bass)

Let's see if this game takes off. The idea is simple: I post a pair of songs -it's original version (or earliest known version) and a cover of it - and the next poster will say which one he or she likes better to then post another pair of original + cover and so on. So, to start things up: Original Cover Edit: I replaced the song because fuck youtube and the labels blocking every Beatles video....

Equivalent to the Guitar Masters thread but this time with singers. Those whose voices amaze you. Be it for their incredible range, on point technique, or maybe because of a beautiful timbre or sheer expressiveness. I'll start with probably the most obvious choice: Freddie Mercury This is amazing: isolated vocals track of The Show Must Go On Incredible and so powerful performance, even more considering he was practically dying by then...

When it comes to albums that are generally regarded as classics, I always just sort of assume that they'll somehow find me eventually, perhaps via an online article, a review, maybe a chance discovery. Sometimes it's a case of wondering what all the fuss is about, but every so often something will come along that blows me away. So, how about it? What classic albums have you only got round to hearing recently?

  12. I couldn't find a thread for this music genre, which is a genre in itself (and a great genre!) Here's how I would define its "Genealogy", by summarizing it in therms of "Big genres", which of course have many subgenres, and by trying to give dates, knowing that it's a general "tendancy" (e.g. you still have Blues bands or Blues derivative bands today) (I know there are many many other ways to define music genres and that it's almost certain to have disagreements on this topic, but here's my way of summarizing it - feel free to agree or disagree ): Pre 1940s: It all started with Blues which, for the Rock world, the equivalent of "the Ancients"…

Different forms of art always influence each other in some way and there's quite a special relation between music and literature. Be it by musicalizing a specific work, such as a piece of poetry, or by taking inspiration by a novel or tale. Examples are many, both in Classical Music and in Popular Music. I'll start with one of my favorite bands taking inspiration from one of my favorite literary works: Led Zeppelin and J.R.R. Tolkien's works. There's many of these - Robert Plant is quite a Tolkien fan - so I'll start with these two: The Battle Of Evermore with some The Silmarillion and The Lord Of The Rings elements in it: …

So the idea is to post those you think are the best with the instrument. Those masters of the 6 strings that leave you at awe when listening what they are capable to do with a guitar. Those with beyond human technical abilities, incredible speed, or simply exquisite taste and clean sound. Since Rock is one of the genres where guitar is the more prominent, it may be that most posts here will be related to Rock music, but hopefully we'll see great guitarists from every other genre too. From Blues, to Jazz, Flamenco, Classical and more. I'll start with probably my favorite guitarist ever, and such a huge influence on many generations to come that star…

Post your favorite songs from the 00's. The early 00's had some good music, but not as good as the 80's or 90's imo. Still good though.
