Fury (2014) starring Brad Pitt

I was recently surprised to hear of new World War 2 film that is centered around tanks.   I do not have high expectations for it yet, but a war film centered around armored and mechanized warfare is rather rare and deserves mention.

Set in the end of World War II in April 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theater, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

The story and the unit patch instantly reminds me an ill fated raid launched by General Patton to save US prisoners-of-war:  Could this film be about Patton's raid???

Task Force Baum was a secret and controversial World War II task force set up by U.S. Armygeneral George S. Patton and commanded by Capt. Abraham Baum in late March 1945. Baum was given the task of penetrating 50 miles (80 km) behind German lines and liberating the POWs in camp OFLAG XIII-B, near Hammelburg. Controversy surrounds the true reasons behind the mission, which may have been simply to liberate Patton's son-in-law, John K. Waters, taken captive in Tunisia in 1943. The result of the mission was a complete failure; of the roughly 300 men of the task force, 32 were killed in action during the raid and only 35 made it back to Allied-controlled territory, with the remainder being taken prisoner. All of the 57 tanksjeeps, and other vehicles were lost.

I recognize Brad Pitt's shoulder patch: 2nd Armored Division 'Hell on Wheels'.  An elite US division.  Suffered enormous casualties but also inflicted heavy losses 1944-1945.

Old news, but I recently found out that Tiger 131 from the Bovington Tank Museum will be used for the film.

For those that are interested in the war, the German Tiger tank is an infamous and special object of interest.  It was the Rolls-Royce of the battlefield: a very expensive,  heavy, and elite weapon that the Germans used to defend against enemy armored penetrations or against stubborn targets.  Each unit cost as much as  2 or 3 fighter aircraft to build, and the Germans never had more than 300 (out of 500 or 600) units operational at any point in time.   The armor, gunnery system, and main cannon was specifically designed to counter and defeat what the allies had in the field during late 1942 to late 1944.  Due to the higher survivability of the combat system and its defensive mission, the crews of these tanks were often clever and experienced foes that had survived many fights.

However, the Tiger Tank's reputation was out of proportionate to its actual operation effect on the battlefield.  It was generally only 10% of the Nazi tank fleet but allied combat reports and accounts would constantly claim of being attacked or attacking 'Tigers'.

The set pictures are promising and I will probably try to see this in theaters.
