Horner: DC at top of his game

Red Bull sporting director Christian Horner says David Coulthard’s motivation is sky-high as he gears up for the 2007 Formula 1 campaign.

Coulthard is eager to get his hands on the first Adrian Newey-designed Red Bull chassis, the RB3, to which the team has devoted most of its attention since the early part of last season.

Horner says the 35-year-old Scot has stepped up his fitness regimen over the winter to make sure he is in the best possible shape for his 14th grand prix season.

“David is extremely motivated and has been training harder than ever before,” he told ITV-F1.com at the Autosport International show.

Horner is confident that the signing of Mark Webber as Coulthard’s team-mate has strengthened the team’s driver line-up and will be a key factor in moving it up the grid this year.

“What is clearly apparent is that both are extremely professional drivers,” he said.

“Both work extremely hard at their role within the team and work closely together on the development of the car.

“So it’s a different situation for the team.

“I think they will both bring the best out of each other.

“I’m convinced we’re going to have a healthy competitive spirit which will drive all of us forward.”

Webber is highly rated by many in the paddock, particularly in terms of sheer qualifying speed, but has yet to win a grand prix and endured a frustrating 2006 campaign with an unreliable Williams.

“Mark obviously hasn’t been in a position to fully realise his potential,” Horner said.

“We’ve seen clear flashes of his speed, his qualifying pace, and hopefully we can provide him with a car to deliver on that potential.”
