February 23, 200718 yr Raúl always thrives in derbys against Atletico Madrid Real Madrid's captain, Raúl González, has played more derbys than anybody else on the squad. The number '7' has become a nightmarish figure for Atletico Madrid's defence ever since he played against them for the first time in the 1994/95 season. He has scored nine goals against the Rojiblancos in unforgettable matches for the fans. A long time has passed since Raúl played his first derby donning Real Madrid's shirt. It happened on 5 November 1994, just after his debut with the Whites against Zaragoza. The seventeen year old was unlucky not to score from two great chances in his first official match with Real Madrid and coach Jorge Valdano decided not to count on him for the derby. He received a surprising reply from the young forward when he told him about his decision: "Do as you wish. If you want to lose, don't line me up." Needless to say, Valdano was stunned. The coach changed his mind and included Raúl in his starting eleven and it became clear that the young player had been right all along. He became the man of the match by provoking the penalty from which the Whites scored the opening goal and by scoring his team's second strike with an impressive shot that went past one of the top inside corners of Diego's goal. From that moment onwards, the young man became the greatest concern for Atletico's defence in every future derby. Raúl has managed to score nine strikes of all sorts and great importance for his team against the Rojiblancos. His winning character makes him grow even more confident in these games, proving to be decisive for his team in many more ways than in scoring goals. Whatever his position may be, he always fights for the ball and never stops running throughout the game. A man capable of anything In a match such as next Saturday's at the Vicente Calderón Stadium, Raúl González was baptised as one of the greatest players in the world. The match had a bad start for his team because Atletico's Kiko managed to score the opening goal. Real Madrid -coached by Fabio Capello back then- overcame this thanks to Raúl's equaliser on the 46-minute mark. But Real Madrid were soon unlucky again when Pedja Mijatovic was sent off with a straight red card. It was inconceivable to think the Whites would come back to win the game, but the number '7' proved otherwise. In the 82nd minute, when it seemed they were condemned to draw the match, Raul controlled the ball on the edge of the box and scored after dribbling past Juanma López. Keeper Molina and Solozábal, who ended in the back himself after a desperate attempt to clear the ball, could not believe their eyes. The victory finally came through goals by Seedorf and Victor, but, most importantly, Raúl showed the world what he was really capable of. The Whites' forward has never lost his natural scoring instinct against the team from the Manzanares and scored Real Madrid's equaliser in their last clash at the Bernabéu earlier this season. Fresh from scoring two strikes against Bayern Munich this week, the captain will no douubt be anxious to become Atletico's bête noire once again.
