Pellegrini: Raul still key for Real

Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that Real Madrid legend Raul still has a major part to play at the club.

After a summer of high profile spending, a splashing of the cash that has seen the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema arrive at the Bernabeu, many observers had thought that Raul may become surplus to requirements despite his legendary status at Real.

Not so says Real head coach Pellegrini.

"He's like an 18-year-old boy. I demand the maximum from my players and he always responds at a high level," Pellegrini said of the player who made his senior debut at Real Madrid in 1994.

"Whether he plays or is on the bench he acts the same. He is his own motivation and is an example for his teammates and anyone who wants to play football.

"He still has the desire to win, after winning everything."

With the football calendar as congested as ever, Pellegrini also declared that he is delighted to have strength in depth, an absolute must for any club wanting to fight for honours on several fronts.

"In October and November we will play eight games each month, six in September plus two internationals," he said.

"Raul, nor Kaka, nor Gonzalo Higuain, nor Ronaldo can play 24 games in three months. The minutes will be distributed among all players."

Raul scored the first of Real's three goals in their 3-2 defeat of Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend - the 224th strike of his Los Blancos career.

Concerned that Real Madrid wasn’t having a big enough impact on our lives, Florentino Perez laid the first stone of “Sports City” when he was in charge of the club in 2004. The project was neglected following his 2006 resignation, but now he is back in the hot seat, the Madrid president is keen to bring the club its very own theme park.

Work on the 60-hectare Sports City site will re-commence next spring, and if all goes to plan, ‘Disneyland Madrid’ will open by 2013. Rides such as the ‘Raul Rollercoaster’ (it just keeps going on and on and on), ‘Sergio Ramos’ House of Haunted Hair Straighteners’ and ‘Cristiano’s prostitute fivesome in 3-D’* will entertain up to two million visitors per year.

Perez has reportedly been shopping around for sponsors for the €150m next stage of construction, and has already held meetings with the mayors of Miami and Beijing

You do realize that this article intends to be sarcastic right? Especially concerning the names of the rides? :)

"Stars don't always win trophies"

UEFA president Michel Platini has warned Real Madrid against assuming their player signings will automatically result in success.

Madrid have spent 250million euros this summer on superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema as part of returning president Florentino Perez's plan to get the Spanish giants back to the top of the football tree.

However, as was the case when Perez was previously in charge of Madrid and his expensively-assembled 'Galacticos' endured a spell without any major trophies between their title triumphs in 2003 and 2007, Platini warned that bringing in so many world-class players does not necessarily guarantee silverware.

"Perez wants to win everything and that's what he has signed so many stars...but we will see what happens in May, when the final of the Champions League is played in Madrid," Platini was quoted as saying in Marca.

"The history of football tells us that the great players do not always win the tournaments."

Platini this summer reiterated his concern at the amount of money being spent in the transfer market, admitting after Ronaldo's world-record move to Madrid that he was "embarrassed" how any club could spent 90million euros on a player.

Marca also spoke to Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson about Madrid's summer spending.

Ferguson believes that with so much talent on show the Bernabeu is sure to be in for some entertaining nights, although he pointed out that it is still early days under new coach Manuel Pellegrini.

"Of course these great players are going to assure good football and they will provide great days for the fans. The only thing is that Pellegrini still has to mould a team," said Ferguson, who was also asked about his relationship with the Spanish giants, which has not always been great over the years.

Ferguson said: "I don't believe in everything that this Real Madrid represents, although I respect them.

Since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival at Real Madrid, the Spanish capital’s nightclubs and escort agencies have been bracing themselves for a sharp increase in trade. Madrid’s evening entertainment industry, however, has been dealt a devastating blow by news on the front page of this morning’s Marca: Florentino Perez will issue each player of a booklet detailing the rules of behaviour, and “night excursions” are now prohibited.

Even though the booklet has yet to reach the hands of any of Real Madrid’s stars, Marca have somehow obtained a copy, the highlights of which we have translated below…

1. Proximity

Players will need to appear approachable to the fans.

2. Education

Players must show respect towards all coaches, managers and fans.

I hate that shoes. Casillas likes them.
