Cannavaro Only Focussed On The Title

Fabio Cannavaro would be delighted to win the league without playing this weekend, but would prefer to have to go out against Osasuna and secure the three points to clinch the title.

The Italian defender is intent on reclaiming the championship and hopes that it can be made certain as quickly as possible even though it may make their next match more difficult.

Madrid can win the title without playing if Villarreal lose to Getafe and if that happens then their game in the Reyno de Navarra would just one of celebration.

"It is important for us to play because if we play then we will only think about winning because we will want to leave there with three points," Cannavaro said. The team is playing well and we showed last Sunday that physically and mentally that we are as strong as ever.

"We will have a drink of champagne after the match even though we will have watched Villarreal's game. Everyone will see it, whether it be on television, the internet or keeping up with things on the phone. It is very important to.

"But we must not forget to win our game. It is not the same to play knowing that you are the champions, but we still have the same responsibility.

"To be honest, it is all the same to me how we win the league. I have been through this in Italy and the only thing that is important is that Madrid are champions on the final day."

Cannavaro then joked that the media are all saying that winning the league is now easy for Madrid, but admits that in the past four months that has not been the case.

"Now it looks easy. Now people can say it is easy, but this has not been an easy campaign for us. The first half of the season went very well and we won a record number of points," he continued.

"We won in Barcelona, at Atlético, in Valencia and many other difficult stadiums, but we have had more problems in the second half of the season and have seen Barcelona and Villarreal pull very close to us."

Cannavaro: We Showed Great Heart

Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro reflected on his side's title-winning 2-1 victory over Osasuna on Sunday evening...

"The Italian international was actually sent off just after half time at the Reyno de Navarra.

However, this second booking merely served to spur his side on to fight back for a 2-1 win after going down 1-0 late on.

On his red card, he said, "It was very tough, because I never expected to be booked again.

"It looked like a normal foul to me, but when I saw the card my world collapsed.

"I can only apologise to my teammates, and I can say that I'm suffering just as the fans are."

Nonetheless, he went on to congratulate his side for their comeback win.

"Fortunately, the team showed that they have so much heart, and above all else they are a unit," he said.

"To come to Pamplona and win in such a situation isn't something everyone can do."

Gattuso Will Leave – Cannavaro

Italy national team captain Fabio Cannavaro believes that Gennaro Gattuso will leave Milan in the summer due to motivational reasons.

Hardman Gattuso has had a disappointing season for Milan, and there have been strong reports in the Italian media over the past few weeks that he will be leaving the club for pastures new.

A number of big clubs have been linked with making a move for the 30-year-old, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, and most notably Bayern Munich, who have openly declared their interest.

Yesterday, Gattuso’s agent Claudio Pasqualin stated his belief that his client would stay at San Siro, despite the arrival of Mathieu Flamini, who many regard as his successor.

Cannavaro disagrees with Pasqualin, and believes that Gattuso may leave due to the fact that he has won everything there is to win with Milan.

"I know Ringhio - obviously he will be short of motivation,” stated the 34-year-old.

“He's won the World Cup and two Champions Leagues, what else can he do?"

Cassano

Cannavaro also spoke about Sampdoria enigma Antonio Cassano, who again displayed his wonderful natural talent against Roma at the weekend.

“His skills never have been in doubt,” said the Real Madrid man.

“If anything, it's his character. I understand that, at Sampdoria, he has had an impressive championship. I'm pleased for him.

“As a captain, and his deep admirer, I can only wish he can manage his nerves better. Be more rational. The talent, I repeat, is indisputable."

Inter Completely Deserve Title - Cannavaro

Italy captain and Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro talked about a number of different topics, including the Serie A title race.

Among the Italian players playing abroad, Azzurri captain Fabio Cannavaro is certainly one of the most successful ones, having just won his second consecutive Liga title with Real Madrid. The defender gave an interview in which he talked about a range of topics.

"Berlusconi has given up on Ronaldinho? I'm not surprised. He costs a fortune and lately he hasn't exaclty set the world alight," he said.

On the rumours of a possible departure of midfielder Gennaro Gattuso from Milan, he said: "I know Ringhio: apparently he's lost his motivation. He's won a World Cup and two Champions Leagues, what more does he need?

"Cassano? His talent has never been in question, but his character has. As Italian captain and a big admirer I can only wish him to control his nerves better."

Cannavaro thinks Italy will do well at Euro 2008 and that Chelsea will win the Champions League: "I'm the captain of a national team which will do well in Austria and Switzerland, I'm sure of it. If we qualified, it's also thanks to Donadoni. And they said he didn't deserve to be there...

"Who will win the Champions League? Chelsea," he declared, explaining: "They're the most Italian team of the Premier League in terms of style. They are very solid."

After Real Madrid celebrated their 31st Spanish title, this weekend it could be Inter's turn in Italy.

"There's nothing to say: they were perhaps not the most attractive team, but certainly the most consistent. They thoroughly deserve the title."
