Dementieva reaches second Olympic final

(BEIJING, August 16) -- Elena Dementieva of Russia defeated teammate Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 7-6(3) in the Women's Singles semifinals at the Olympic Green Tennis Center on Saturday, August 16.

Both players started nervously and traded service breaks for the first five games. Dementieva was the first to hold serve for 4-2 and then broke again at 5-3 to take the first set.

The second set was a much tighter affair, full of intense baseline rallies, which more often than not ended in an error from one of the players. Dementieva faced break points in all of her service games, and both players dropped serve twice. Dementieva created two match points at 5-4, but couldn't find the winning shot.

She got the upper hand in the ensuing tiebreak and found herself with three more match points. She hit a blistering forehand down the line that Zvonareva could not get near to seal her victory.

Dementieva, who won the silver medal eight years ago in Sydney, now advances to her second Olympic final where she will meet teammate Dinara Safina of Russia, who defeated Li Na of China in the other semifinal 7-6(3), 7-5.

Russia could sweep the Women's Singles medals in this event as Zvonareva will face Li in Sunday's bronze medal match.

No NOC has won all three medals in an Olympic Tennis event since Great Britain did so in the 1908 Women's Singles
