Posted February 5, 201411 yr BiographyBorn on May 31, 1961 in Rochester, Minnesota, Lea Thompson is an American actress and director. As a girl, she studied dance, and became professional at the age of 14. She won several scholarships to numerous ballet schools. Some of these are the American Ballet Theatre, the San Francisco Ballet and the Pennsylvania Ballet. Lea Thompson has also danced with the Ballet Repertory and the Minnesota Dance Theatre. When she was 19, she auditioned for Mikhail Baryshnikov, who told her that she was “too stocky.” Her dreams as a ballerina crushed, Thompson turned to acting.Working as a waitress, Lea Thompson appeared in several Burger King and Twix commercials. In 1982, she provided the voice for the character Cecily Loper in the computer crime mystery MysteryDisc: Murder, Anyone? Her first major role was in 1983’s Jaws 3-D, which was followed by her portrayal of Lisa in All the Right Moves. In 1984, she filmed Red Dawn, and was in The Wild Life as Anita.Lea Thompson’s biggest role came in 1985, when she played Lorraine Baines McFly in the famous Back to the Future, where she reprised her role for the trilogy. The next year, she was cast in SpaceCamp, and sang and acted in Howard the Duck. Critics found the film forgettable despite its being produced by George Lucas. She was offered a part in 1987’s Some Kind of Wonderful and won the Young Artist Award for Best Actress.Thompson went on to film The Wizard of Loneliness in 1988, and had the part of Sylvia Vaine in one episode of HBO’s Tales from the Crypt. In 1989, she had a prominent role in the TV movie Nightbreaker, which earned her a nomination for a CableACE award. She also starred in Dennis the Menace in 1993 and The Little Rascals in 1994.From 1995-1999, she became the star of the NBC sitcom Caroline in the City. She received a People’s Choice Award for “Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Series” for her performance.She then took a break from acting to star in several Broadway productions, and then appeared in a TV series known as For the People. Following this was a TV movie starring Tony Danza and Betty White, called Stealing Christmas. Lea Thompson has also been appearing in the series Ed and had a guest role in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit in 2004. She played Jane Doe in a series of made-for-television movies for Hallmark, and directed two of the films Jane Doe: The Harder They Fall and Jane Doe: Eye of the Beholder. In April 2007, she starred in another TV movie A Life Interrupted, and guest-starred on the show Head Case. In 2010, she was cast on the ABC Family Drama Switched at Birth.
