October 10, 201311 yr Author KACY ANN HILL Interview by 'THERAWBOOK', May 26 2013 Tell us about yourself.I am Kacy Anne Hill, a freckly girl from Phoenix, Arizona. As of now, I am a model in Los Angeles trying to figure out the world. I graduated high school in May of 2012 and decided that I’d take a year off of school and move to LA on my own, so I did. What is beauty to you and how do you define beauty?Beauty is the ability to inspire. Simple and complex as inspiration. How did you get discovered as a model? When I was sixteen, I was offered an internship with a wedding photographer in Phoenix and began to take photography seriously. When the offer to get in front of the camera was presented to me, I fell in love with both sides of a photo. I didn’t really intend to be a model, but had a lot of photographers in Phoenix wanted to shoot my face, so everything kind of evolved to what it is now and I recently signed with M Model Management in West Hollywood. What do you like and dislike about modeling?I love the freedom that I have to create. I recently read an article on Kate Moss that described her as a “silent movie actress” and I like this verbiage because it is exactly how I view my art. Just as beauty is the ability to inspire, a great photo has to possess this beauty in some way, and that is how I view my job. I dislike the amount of sketchy people in the industry. It is difficult sometimes to want to spend the time sifting through bad people to get to the great ones, but it is worth it to me. I love what I do and I wouldn’t be the same person without it. If you weren’t a model, what alternative career would you pursue?I was going to go to school for either peace studies or photography, but I think I’m kind of all over the place. The finality of solidifying my future into one major scares me. I want to do a million things – I want to explore, to photograph, to meet people, to help people, to start a business, to write, to be everything! I don’t think I could ever “settle down” – I need to be constantly evolving. As a model, what is your opinion on modeling nude? Do you think the body is most beautiful bare or clothed?I have a lot to say about this, but I’ll keep it short. I believe that in our society, we view nudity as strictly sexual and are much too offended by seeing skin, especially when the context is not meant as sexual. Furthermore, I believe that women are too often objectified to sexual objects and I am extremely saddened by both of these ideas. To be honest, nudity should not be a big deal. People should be taught from a young age not to be ashamed of their bodies or concerned about what someone else does with theirs. Nudity is nudity and nothing more; it the most natural (not sexual) state of being and I believe that the further we shy away from it, the closer we get to losing our humanity. That being said, there is unfortunately a multitude of negative criticism that a female model can receive for modeling nude, as well as the the potential risks inherent in the internet’s free range to objectify her body and treat her as though she does not possess any human feeling. I choose not to model nude because of this. To answer whether I believe whether the body is more beautiful bare or clothed, I definitely believe the body is more beautiful bare in its natural state. It is vulnerable because there is nothing to hide – scars, tattoos, and imperfections are all visible. I think that it unites us because we are unable to socially classify a person through where they shop or what they hang on their bodies – we are all human! You’re a model for American Apparel. It’s a wonderful brand but over the years there has been concern over the controversial ads. What is your opinion on the company’s advertisements and the overall debate?I love AA. I think they are brilliant for shooting models with no makeup, no hairstylists, and minimal photoshop. I don’t think it should offend someone to see a model topless in a pair of tights or socks or in a sheer bodysuit. I’m concerned as to why American Apparel has received so much criticism in their advertising campaign and large companies have not received massive uproar about the treatment of their sweatshop employees overseas. It seems to me that we need to do some prioritizing as a society. How has your perception of beauty evolved since you became a model, especially as you are surrounded by stylists and photographers?I see beauty everywhere, just as I did a year ago, just as I did five years ago. Beauty is the ability to inspire, and whether or not I defined it as such when I was younger, the concept still applied. What’s a day in the life of Kacy Anne? There’s no typical day and that is what I love! The only things that apply to every single day are waking up and eating some breakfast (usually oats with some honey) and slipping on my footie pajamas and hopping into bed. I shoot a lot with various photographers and friends, eat yummy food, meet new people, thrift shop, bake cupcakes, smile, laugh, cry. I don’t have a schedule and I like that. I don’t think I could go back to having a strict schedule every single day – that’s not how I function and I don’t think it’s entirely healthy. Who and what inspires you?Crying inspires me a lot. I like the tangibility of the connection between body and soul when I cry. I am inspired by everyone I encounter, whether it be inspiration to create, to live, to feel sadness, or disgust. I guess I’m especially inspired by people who take chances and work hard to accomplish what they truly want. And Hemingway. What songs are on your personal playlist?Pink Matter / Frank OceanTo Build a Home / Cinematic OrchestraBlack Gold / Esperana SpaldingSleeping Lessons / The ShinsTwo Doves / Dirty ProjectorsAll My Rage / Laura MarlingI Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know (Live) / Amy WinehouseCountdown / Beyonce (Okay, Beyonce should be on everyone’s playlist all the time)Wild World / Cat StevensGoin’ Home / Dan AuerbachTake the Box / Amy WinehouseAnd too many others. I like music and I don’t like it any less or more because its new or old. I like it all. It’s beautiful. What are three things that most people don’t know about you?1. I can lick my elbow.2. I used to stand on my head for long periods of time as a kid.3. I sing everywhere but the shower.
