Another dismal day for Honda

A tough conclusion to a troubled weekend for the Honda team with both RA107s lacking speed today. Rubens Barrichello ended the race where he began in 18th position, whilst Jenson Button endured a similar battle coupled with poor car balance before a throttle sensor problem curtailed his race on lap 36.

"Today we just didn't have any pace and despite the fact that I was pushing as much as possible, there was nothing coming from the car," Barrichello said. "The race started badly when I was pushed wide at the exit of turn two and ended up at the back of the field. Overtaking is next to impossible at this track so that was the story of my race really. Everyone at the team is feeling the pain at the moment. We know how bad the situation is but we have to keep our heads up and keep working at it over the break to find some improvements."

Jenson Button commented, "What can I say? We all know the problems and how much work there is to be done. The problem that brought my race to an end appears to be a sensor problem as I couldn't get full throttle for a few laps before I eventually slowed for the blue flags. Then the engine just stalled. Before that we were massively off the pace and I struggled with huge understeer. Our results today speak for themselves."

Engineering director Jacky Eeckelaert added, "This has been a weekend to forget. Quite simply, we did not have the race pace here. On the first lap Rubens lost some places when he ran wide at turn two. Thereafter, having started 18th on the grid, it was just a case of getting to the end of the race and looking for opportunities. There was nothing more he could have done with the car today. A similar story for Jenson until an engine-related problem stopped him out on the circuit. We have three weeks before the next race and a huge amount of work to do in that time."

Honda drivers optimistic over future

Wednesday 7th November 2007

After a truly miserable season, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello have insisted that Honda will hit back in 2008.

The Japanese squad finished eighth in the Constructors', just ahead of their so-called B-Team Super Aguri.

Honda's RA107 was a beast of a machine and the drivers were therefore unable to compete with the frontrunners.

But the 27-year-old Brit claims that the hardships have brought the team together.

"It goes without saying that 2007 has been a very tough season for me and the Honda Racing F1 Team," Button told the official Formula One website. "However, a year like this brings out the real character of a team.

"We've had to pull together, keep motivated and try as hard as we can even though the performance of the car was far from what we expected. I'm pleased that we were able to do that and achieve points finishes when others had faster cars and didn't.

"Fighting from further back on the grid has actually been quite fun in the second half of the year, particularly in Turkey, Italy and China where I managed to do a lot of overtaking. This all helps to develop your race craft for the future.

"We know where we went wrong with this car and the team will be back at the factory over the winter working very hard to give Rubens and myself a more competitive car for next year.

"For my part, I will be focusing as always on my physical fitness and preparation for the new season, and we will hope to make a fresh and positive start to 2008."

Button's team-mate Barrichello failed to score a single Championship point for the first time in his F1 career.

The Brazilian though, is confident that Honda's fortunes will change.

"We knew from the start of the season that the RA107 would not be on the pace and it was such a disappointment, particularly after the team ended the previous season in 2006 so strongly," said the former Ferrari ace.

"Having said that, the season has been a learning experience for the team and I am very proud of the way that we have all pulled together and worked through the difficult times. I am disappointed not to have scored any points this year as but for some bad luck at key times, we should have been in the points on at least a couple of occasions.

"Looking ahead to next season, we will be working very hard over the winter and pre-season to improve our position for the 2008 season.

"The team has done a lot of growing together this year, and with some of the new faces who have joined to strengthen our resources back at the factory, I am optimistic that there will be an improvement in our performance next year."
