June 20, 200915 yr Raica Oliveira by Gabriel Mendes 2007 in New York I was strolling through Shopping Leblon here in Rio and got the chance to see photographer Gabriel Mendes' work, "Urban Puns - Trocadilhos Urbanos", on display there. It is part of "Arena da Moda", a fashion event that Shopping Leblon is promoting from September 11-22. These are urban portraits, mostly everyday-people shot in front of street-art murals, that were shot in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and New York, where Mendes resides. There are 12 photo panels in total, and though I thought they were not greatly displayed in the mall, the images itself were quite fetching. This visual diary has been a Mendes' project since 2005, when he started mixing portraits and graffiti art in NYC.
