Photographs by Derek KettelaThe 29-year-old Russian model Irina Shayk grew up in a remote mining town. She was discovered at the age of 20, and has since starred in every annual swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated since 2007 as well as campaigns for Armani Exchange (where she met her ex-boyfriend Cristiano Ronaldo), and has walked in the Givenchy show at Paris Fashion Week. She lives in New York City.Growing up I was born in the middle of nowhere, in a place called Yemanzhelinsk. My father was a coal miner, my mother a piano teacher. We had a garden because in Russia to survive you have to have a garden. We planted tomatoes, potatoes and cucumbers. I had to take care of it after school and help my mother.Being discovered My older sister went to a beauty school that was next door to a modelling school, and she asked me to join her there. One day an agent approached me. He's the one who discovered Natalia Vodianova and all the big Russian models. He wanted me to go to Paris. After a couple of months I said yes; I thought it might be a great opportunity to help my family.Starting out Paris was the first city I ever went to. I was 20 years old, which was pretty late to start as a model. I'd never been anywhere like that. It was a hard time - I didn't speak the language, I didn't have any money. I lived in an apartment with other models, and some of them made fun of me. It's a difficult business, it's very competitive. People who don't know our life think, oh, she's pretty, she's wearing a pretty dress and she smiles and she gets paid a lot of money for nothing, but it's a hard job.Work In modelling a hundred people are going to say no to you, but maybe 10 are going to say yes, and that's how you make it out there. Paris was a really difficult time for me, but I thought, I cannot go back to my hometown with nothing, I have to at least make some money. But it was impossible so after about six months I went to Barcelona, and that's where I made my first money.Beauty I don't believe in plastic surgery. I believe women have to love their bodies, and that it's all about confidence. When I do shoots, I say to myself, I love my body and I'm not afraid to show it. I hope every woman will feel special and be in love with her body, whatever her size.Fitness To get into lingerie or a swimsuit for a shoot you have to feel your best, and of course you have to train. Lately I've taken up ju-jitsu, which is great fun and also great cardio. You have to find something that works for your body. I get bored very easily, so I'm always trying to find something different.Style I've been pretty smart with my money. I hate to waste money on clothes. I prefer to buy classic pieces that you can have in your closet for years. My style is very simple; I try to be low-key. I can spend my day in sweat pants or gym clothes. When I'm not working I don't like to dress up; I hate [doing my] hair and make-up - it's kind of boring.Fame The thing you realise as a public person is that press attention is part of your job. Of course, sometimes you want to hide and don't want the attention, but it doesn't matter what people are saying. My friends and family know who I am. I'm not mad at anybody; they're writing something because it's their job. I'm just doing my job.Social media I'm on Instagram, Facebook and a little bit of Twitter. I love Instagram but I'm not addicted. I follow my friends back in Russia, friends in New York, the Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, brands like Prada and Miu Miu, and [the model] Chrissy Teigen because she's hilarious.Schedule I don't even know what I'm going to do next week. Sometimes I wake up and my agency says, you have to fly to LA tomorrow. With my lifestyle you can't plan anything. I complain but I love every bit. I couldn't imagine sitting in an office all day.Books Dostoevsky is my favourite writer. I think if I'd been around in 1867 I would love to date him. I've just started to read Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird - it's really difficult for me because it's in English, but I'm trying.Personality Some people think I'm not nice. I mean, I'm Russian and I can be really Russian but I'm a very friendly Russian. I'm a pretty nice person, but sometimes people don't know that about me.
