December 6, 20168 yr GRAZIA SOUTH AFRICA - 1 DECEMBER 2014 A CHAT WITH EDIE CAMPBELL The Brit model is having a massive moment. The 24-year-old talks horses, big dreams and being crowned the new face of YSL’s Black Opium fragrance. Did you always want to be a model? No. I don’t think it’s the sort of thing you can choose or aspire to do. It either happens or it doesn’t! I still don’t know what I want to be though. What do you do when you’re not working? Get in my car and head for the countryside to ride (horses)! Or go see some art. Wandering around the streets of London always makes me happy. Why is horse riding so important to you? It’s very good for crushing the ego because you never do as well when you’re competing as you hope you might. It’s a constant lesson in humility, accepting failure, and dogged determination. You’re a YSL ambassador. What does YSL mean to you? It’s got the best of that old Parisian world but without being conservative. It’s kind of cool without trying too hard. Can you describe the Black Opium fragrance? It doesn’t seem alien or overpowering, it has a bit more subtlety which is nice. I like the unique contrast in Black Opium, the subtle combination between the bitterness of coffee bean and the sweetness of vanilla. What is your favorite scent? The smell of horses and cut grass. And then the scents that I associate with my family and friends. What’s your greatest fear…and strength? Fear of being bored, and fear of being limited. I’m not sure what my greatest strength is, probably determination or my competitiveness. I don’t like to do things badly! Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully it will surprise me! Who knows what I’ll be doing, I just cross my fingers that life will keep throwing fun stuff my way!
