Real Madrid's Ricardo Carvalho hails Pepe and insists Dani Alves deserved to be sent off

Ricardo Carvalho says Dani Alves was fortunate to escape a second yellow after taking down Marcelo for Madrid's penalty but he is happy with how his team played

By Patrick Devaney

Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho is adamant that Dani Alves should have been sent off after Brazilian right back took out his compatriot Marcelo during the 1-1 clasico draw against Barcelona.

Alves was already on a yellow card for a foul on Emmanuel Adebayor just minutes before he gave away the penalty, which was converted by Cristiano Ronaldo.

''It was a yellow card in the penalty for Marcelo, no doubt,'' Carvalho was quoted as saying by AS.

That yellow card would have resulted in Alves' second of the game and that would have ruled the Brazilian out of the Copa del Rey final against Madrid on Wednesday. But Carvalho quickly moved on to assess his team's display against the Catalans.

''I think the result was just. We played with one less player and we showed our character. We are happy with the match. Barca played well but Pepe had a great match. For me, he was the best,'' he added emphatically.

Carvalho was aided in his defensive duties by Pepe who was shielding the Madrid defence from the source at midfield as Jose Mourinho played him tactically to counter the dominance from Barcelona.

Despite coming from behind to snatch a point with only 10 men, Madrid remain eight points behind Barca in the hunt for the La Liga title with only six league games remaining.
