October 14, 20159 yr Get to Know Michael Kors’s Muse Karmen Pedaru Who What Wear: You’ve been working with Michael Kors for years. What do you think makes the MK woman so appealing? Karmen Pedaru: For me, the Michael Kors woman is a free thinker, open-minded, sporty, but also sophisticated and elegant. I relate so much to that. WWW: Who are some women that inspire you? KP: Strong women inspire me. I love Audrey Hepburn and Faye Dunaway; they are my all-time favorites. Also, I admire Angelina Jolie. WWW: What have you learned about your personal style, working in fashion for so many years? KP: In the shows and at photo shoots, I get to wear such amazing clothes that sometimes may not be the most comfortable. I also have to wear a lot of makeup and my hair full of hairspray. It’s a great departure for me. In my personal time, I like to stick to the basics; I wear simple, easy clothes and minimal makeup. WWW: What five pieces should every woman have in her wardrobe? KP: All you need is a good classic blazer, leather pants, a great pair of heels, a nice black dress (nothing too fancy), and a timeless coat. With those five pieces, I think every woman can look amazing, and they are so versatile! WWW: What item is on heavy rotation in your wardrobe right now? KP: I like to stick to the basics with my wardrobe, but right now, I’m having fun playing with texture and jewelry. I love leather and fur; both are great ways to elevate your wardrobe. Of course, a simple gold necklace or bangle is always the perfect accessory. WWW: What is your must-have item for fall? KP: A fur coat. It is such a classic and adds that extra something to every outfit! I always feel so sophisticated and glamorous wearing a fur coat, even if it’s over a T-shirt. WWW: Is there a trend you never get tired of? KP: I’m not sure it’s a trend, but I will always love wearing leather pants and a T-shirt with high heels. It’s the ultimate simple outfit that’s still so edgy. It’s my go-to when I want to feel great in what I’m wearing. WWW: If you could swap wardrobes with anyone, who would it be and why? KP: Victoria Beckham. She’s such an amazing women who for so many years has had fabulous style. She must have closets of incredible clothes! WWW: What’s the best fashion advice you’ve ever received? KP: Style is all about owning what you love and what makes you feel like your best self. I always try to channel that. WWW: You are constantly on the go for work. What’s your secret to staying healthy and fit? KP: As I fly a lot, I drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Also, I carry a jum prope with me whenever I’m traveling; it’s great exercise on the go. I also generally try to eat healthy and drink green juices. WWW: Can you tell us about your beauty regime? What products do you take everywhere? KP: I love La Prairie products; they never let me down. I also get massages and facials regularly. It’s a great way to destress and treat yourself. I always leave feeling so refreshed with my skin glowing. WWW: If you were a perfume, how would you describe your scent? KP: I love fresh woody notes! They’re so bold and invigorating. That’s what I love about the Michael Kors 24K Brilliant Gold Eau du Perfum ($100). It mixes light florals with a bit of woodiness. WWW: Do you have any dos or don’ts when it comes to applying perfume? KP: I always spray it in front of me, walking through the perfume cloud so that the scent settles in my hair and on the outfit I’m wearing. That way, it lingers all night! WWW: What has been your most memorable experience working as a model? KP: I love my job, because there have been many great experiences over the years. I’m not sure I could choose just one as the most memorable. WWW: Where is your favorite place to visit in the world? KP: My home [Estonia] and the Maldives. They’re the places I feel most relaxed and happy. WWW: What do you think is the biggest social media faux pas? KP: I can be pretty private. My biggest faux pas is over-posting—people posting about every second of their lives. I prefer to post less frequently and make sure that it’s important to me and to my followers.
October 14, 20159 yr Karmen Pedaru, Model"I live in between Rome and Estonia. It’s great—I was living in New York, but it was too busy and hectic. I’m European as well—I grew up in Estonia—so I like to be in Europe. And it’s just very calm and beautiful. You can go outside and really look around at everything. I don’t want to talk about fashion every single day. And that’s the best thing with my friends in Rome...we never talk about it!My husband and I go out for dinner every night—we have three restaurants in the Piazza Navona that we switch between. My husband always wants to try new things, but I freak out if I have to go to a new restaurant. I don’t know what to expect. I mean, I love raw food and I know where I can get the best of that—La Rosetta. My good friend is the chef, and it’s won a Michelin Star as well. My husband is probably the only Italian who doesn’t cook. The only thing we do in the kitchen is open a bottle of wine. I think that’s the only thing we need—a bottle opener. Sometimes he does cook pasta at 5 in the morning, but at that time, everything is good! When we go to Estonia, we play cards all night. I love cards, and I love casinos, and I love gambling. I grew up with cards all my life. Blackjack, and then there’s a bunch of Italian games I play with my husband’s mom a lot. I'd rather do that then go out to a normal club. But if we do go out—the trashier, the better. Oh, it’s so much more fun! I love really cheesy music from the '80s. Regular clubs bore me.When I go out, I try to do a bit of a smokey eye, and I love the contour—but I’m actually bad at putting mascara on myself. I do everything really fast. For my eyes, I just put some color on, it’s not really very technical. [Laughs] I do it with a pencil inside the eye a little and then on the lids. And then I smudge it up with my fingers. Yes, I love the Charlotte Tilbury Rock'n'Kohl Eyeliner. I mean, all of her stuff is great. Then I use concealer when I have to cover something, but I try not to. And I’ve been using Le Volume de Chanel Mascara—it's basic and easy to use.I don’t like to do lips, because it always comes off. On me it’s always all over the place when I put on a red lip. I just started liking the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner, just to throw it on, because it makes your lips look bigger. It's nude-ish—pink is not acceptable in my life. But I do use Michael Kors' Rose Radiant Gold Eau de Parfum! [Laughs] It's a bit spicy, which I like a lot. Before I put on makeup, I love doing a face massage. In an ideal world, I would do the Mommy Dearest, Joan Crawford routine—the whole thing. But, you know, I’m so freakin’ lazy that I don’t. The reason they do it before shoots is because it relaxes the muscles, and the makeup does look better. So that, I really like. I love face massages. And I do a lot of masks. In the morning, I use cold water—lots of it. It helps to get my cheekbones back and looking normal again, like a human! And then just toner and moisturizer and eye cream—all La Prairie. I’ve been trying every single one, so many different creams…it’s so expensive, but it’s the only cream that actually works. I do have the serum and toner and everything. But I put on a lot, like when I go to sleep, I put on a lot of the moisturizer, like slap it on.My hair has a natural wave in it because I don't like to blow dry it. I don't do any of that stuff—curling irons or straighteners or hairsprays. Right now I'm blondish because of the sea water and the sun, but I don't color it. I just use whatever my husband is using—we have the Kiehl's Shampoo and Conditioner and I use a lot of it. The one thing I do have is hair oil. During the summer when you have the sun and the sea water, and after washing, I put that on, just to moisturize a bit, so it’s not so rough—it does get like that.A lot of times when we come back from the party or whatever, friends are coming over to our house, because we have a very beautiful terrace. And we just have more fun, until someone passes out. [Laughs]"—as told to ITGKarmen Pedaru photographed by Tom Newton in New York on September 13, 2015.
