May 31, 200817 yr Author Brive shock Toulouse Brive scored a shock 15-12 win over French giants Toulouse on Friday to secure their place in the Top 14. The win is Brive second in fifteen days against on of France's big clubs and beating Stade Français a fortnight ago. Toulouse were unable to match Brive's two tries and Jean Baptiste Elissalde missed an injury time penalty to hand Brive an unexpected victory. A week after defeat in the Heineken Cup Final, Toulouse will head home wondering how they conspired to loose a game that, on paper at least, looked like a walk in the park. They made seven changes to the side that lost to Munster last Saturday but still lined-up a very strong side. Brive fought tooth and nail for their victory and were able to disrupt Toulouse enough at the break down to prevent their visitors from putting together the flowing movements for which they are famous. But in truth Toulouse only have themselves to blame as they lacked the poise and clinical finishing that has made them one of the most feared teams in Europe. Both sides came out with very few inhibitions and played fast and loose from the word go. Brive had the better of the opening exchanges and were rewarded for their enterprising play when full-back Alexis Palisson opened the scoring with a penalty. Toulouse fly-half Elissalde kicked a penalty for the visitors to draw the scores level before Brive scored a try in the corner through number eight Simon Azoula after a penalty was kicked into touch rather than at the posts. Toulouse then camped in the Brive half. After absolutely crushing Brive in previous scrums, Toulouse fluffed their best opportunity of the first-half by giving away a scrum against the head as the ball bounced forward off the feet in the second row while they were just three or four metre short of the Brive try line. So Brive led 8-3 at half-time. Toulouse dominated the possession stats and were pushing the Brive scrum around like a shopping cart but couldn't turn their superiority into points as their handling skill uncharacteristically let them down time and time again. Their loose forwards in particular were of guilty putting the ball down far too often. Toulouse looked rattled and were forcing the issue, trying to launch attacks from anywhere and everywhere. Their lack of concentration made it seem very much like their heads were still in Cardiff. Brive must be commended for their defensive work but in truth their lead was due as much to Toulouse's careless errors than the home side's competitive spirit. Scrum-half Jean Baptiste Péjoine was doing particularly well for Brive behind a pack that was moving backwards. Cédric Heymans was looking his dangerous best but when he left the field after half-an-hour, limping and holding his ribs, things weren't looking good for the former champions. But the team in red started the second half at a furious pace. When Brive wing Farid Sid tried his very hardest to start a fight with Florian Fritz, the referee awarded Toulouse a penalty with which they used to set up a line-out. When that too was wasted coach Guy Novès's patience ran out and he called in the calvary. Enter William Servat, Dan Human and Fabien Pelous. The line-out improved immediately and soon their continued dominance in possession was converted into three points as Ellisalde set his second through the uprights. When a Palisson penalty attempt bounced off the post, Toulouse launched one of their lethal counter attacks which lead to another Elisalde penalty for off-side and for the first time the visitors had the lead at 9-8 with twenty minutes left. Brive were simply unable to get into the Toulouse 22 metre area and when Elissalde sent a drop goal sailing over to open the gap to four points with ten minutes to play, the game looked done and dusted. Not so. Brive bounced back into the lead when South African flank Antonie Claasen scored. Palisson and Sid combined beautifully to leave the Toulouse back line rosy cheeked. Brive had a grand total of two chances to score all game, and did so on both occasions. Elisalde had a chance to win the game for Toulouse with a penalty at the death but when he sent is effort wide the game belonged to Brive who are now certain to avoid relegation.
