October 27, 200915 yr Author Bastareaud delivers public apology The day before he starts his community service for the scandal he caused in New Zealand, Stade Français centre Mathieu Bastareaud has delivered the public apology demanded by France coach Marc Lièvremont. Les Bleus will name their squad for the November tests on Wednesday and according to all sources, Bastareaud will not be amongst the 30 names to face South Africa, Samoa and New Zealand. Accompanied by Stade Français boss Max Guazzini, Bastareaud faced 40-odd reporters and offered the unconditional apology Lièvremont said was a prerequisite for the 21-year-olds return to the Tricolor fold. "I want to offer my apologies to the French federation, the New Zealand federation, the staff and all the players of the French team," said Bastareaud in reference to the incident when he lied about being attacked on a Wellington street. "We have to stop this circus. I'm fed up with hearing all kinds of made-up versions of what happened. I want it to stop once and for all. Maybe I wasn't clear enough, I know this incident is going to follow me for my whole career but I've learnt to live with it. I lied and assume responsibility. "The right version of the incident is, as I said in a statement on June 25, that I came back late to the hotel in a rather disreputable state and I fell." The incident reached diplomatic proportions as French Prime Minster at the time François Fillon sent an apology to his kiwi counterpart. The centre, who has won four caps, was briefly suspended for three months by the French Federation before the sanction was replaced by community service. "I met Marc Lievremont and we talked about what happened. He told me the door of the French team was still open for me and I thank him," said Bastareaud. In response to a barrage of question from journalists, Bastareaud made it clear that suggestions of a fist-fight with his one of his team-mates were completely untrue. "I've heard that some or other player hit me - that's not true," he said. "Just try take your pants off when you've had too much to drink," replied Guazzini to journalists who weren't convinced. "I feel really bad that the situation put certain players in difficulty when they had nothing to with it," added Bastareaud. "There's still some uneasiness when I cross path with the other players from the French team. I regret everything that happened that night. I hope it will pass." As for as his community service - which involves coaching youngsters - is concerned, the centre said he was "happy to do it." "It will be a good experience for me to be close to young players, even if I'm not old," he added. "Maybe it will awaken a vocation for coaching in me." As for the World Cup in New Zealand in two years, Bastareaud said it was up to Lièvremont to decide if he would be on the flight. "It's in two years, it's far away," he said. "I'm not afraid to go back. On the contrary I look forward to return if I'm allowed to."
