A number of players from the French Barbarians team that recently returned from Argentina have tested positive for the H1N1 virus, also know as "swine 'flu."

Toulouse flank Grégory Lamboley, Biarritz wing Jean-Baptiste Gobelet, Castres prop Lionel Faure and Barbarians and Montauban team doctor Philippe Izard have already tested positive and are receiving treatment.

Stade Français centre Geoffroy Messina, Toulouse wing Yves Donguy and his team-mate Yannick Nyanga, have presented symptoms and are awaiting the results of their tests.

The list of infected players is expected to grow in the coming days since those with virus were on the same flight back to France as their team-mates.

Lamboley has been suffering from a severe fever since the Barbarians 32-18 loss to Argentina last week. Tests undertaken upon returning to France confirmed that he has contracted the virus that has claimed 17 lives in Argentina alone. 1294 cases have been reported in the South American country according to the Argentine Ministry of health. .

"My waiting for my tests but I'm not very hopeful since a number of symptoms appeared while I was on the plane," Messina told reporters in France.

"I already have the medicine and I'm just waiting for confirmation before starting treatment." "We're in quarantine," said Biarritz back Nicolas Brusque, who is relieved to not have presented any symptoms yet.

All training at Montauban has been suspended since Dr. Izard positive results were received. No players have been affected yet but all have been places in quarantine as a preventative measure and are training at home. 174 cases of the epidemic have been confirmed in France with 84 being investigated.

Bastareaud comes clean

bastareaudsideon2321766.jpg

France and Stade Français centre Mathieu Bastareaud has admitted to lying about being assaulted in New Zealand in the early hours of Sunday morning.

20-year-old Bastareaud returned to France earlier this week with stitches in his face after saying he had been assaulted by "four or five" men in the streets of Wellington.

In a statement published on his club's website on Thursday, Bastareaud has confessed to making the entire story up after doubts were cast over his original version of events when it was revealed that CCTV footage from the night showed Bastareaud walking into his hotel uninjured with two other players and two women.

"I have to clear up the incidents that happened in New Zealand. I have to tell the truth," read Bastareaud's statement.

"On Saturday night, I came back to the hotel after having to much to drink. I fell in my room and hit the bedside table and opened up my cheek.

"I was ashamed, I panicked and I thought I was going to be thrown out of the French national team. I told this story thinking it would all blow over, but seeing the magnitude it's taken I prefer to tell the truth.

"I didn't want to shock my family. I panicked and dug myself deeper into a hole." "I would like to apologise to the New Zealand Rugby Union, the city of Wellington, the players and staff of the French national team, my club, my friends and most of all those who were affected by this incident."

Stade Francais owner Max Guazzini said that Bastareaud, who has left for his native French Caribbean on holiday, had been afraid of offending his very religious family.

Guazzini said that Bastareaud had made an "error of youth" and that the young player, who didn't lay charges, didn't realise the scandal his actions would cause, refusing to answer interview requests in an attempt to not make the situation worse.

OMG      seriously Mathieu had my sympathy because violence is unexceptable in any situation but his... I'm speechless!!!!

... my speech is back; why oh why did he have to lie about going out and having too much to drink?? His a young guy, we all drink behind our parents back and then when were hungover the next day we lie and say it's something we ate that's making us sick. The joke of it is he was in WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND how would his parents find out about the night out if their in PARIS, FRANCE?? He is so stupid, most rugbymen have brains his the first one to have a singke digit IQ. I hope he gets a lot of stick for it/fined because he lied to police in Wellington. I'm so baffled by the whole thing, yes we all are brought up differently and live by the values (rules for some) of our parents but this is so wrong on so many levels. His parents need to look at themselves and see where they have made a mistake.
