Hi, everyone.
If you'll excuse me, I just wanted to interrupt the Route 66 road trip with a brief word that I've started up the 2014 version of the SI Swimsuit Model Tournament over in the competition threads.
I know a lot of you regular posters on here liked participating last year, so I wanted to give you all a heads-up. If you could participate, it'd make it that much cooler.
Keep those amazing guesses on SI 2015 models going. It makes this thread very enjoyable. Thanks for your hard work!

Hello, everyone! I had a lot of fun running the 2013 SI Swimsuit Model Tournament, so I’ve decided to do it again for 2014.
Last year, Marisa Miller walked away with the title. Who will it be this year? You’ll decide.The tournament will start this Friday, September 5!(Please ignore the first several posts in this thread, as they were from an initial start that I had to stop due to health reasons. BTW, while i agree with MJ that this is the best rookie class ever, she should know that 12 rookies is not a record.
the concept of rookies was introduced in 1999 and the very next year had 15 rookies: elsa benitez, kylie bax, kristy hinze, malia jones, malania knauss, shakara ledard, ana paula lemes, naoemie lenoir, josie maran, carre otis, gabrielle reece, rachel roberts, molly sims, and estella warren
True, Slowen… good catch! But, the count is actually 13. You listed 14 names (not 15) - all correct, but Gabrielle Reece isn't considered a model. She was a sports star, a la Danica Patrick or Steffi Graf. Confirmation of that is SI's 50 Years of Beautiful list of every model to appear in an issue, and Gabby isn't on that list.
Of course, SI also considered Beyonce a model in their list, which is ridiculous. I think they felt like they had to because of the cover. After all, they couldn't have a "non cover model" for one year, could they?!? B.S.! My list has 222 models entering 2014, while SI's official list is 223 counting Beyonce. I refuse to consider her a model, though.
None of this changes the fact that you were right, though. Good catch… and yeah, they should know better, no?

The result from the Championship Match:(16) Marisa Miller - 51%(3) Elle Macpherson - 49%Marisa Miller is the champion of the 2013 SI Swimsuit Model Tournament!My spin: Whew! Marisa and Elle literally went back and forth for the entire voting period. Marisa would be in the lead slightly, then get overtaken by Elle slightly, then the two would flip-flop again. At the final bell, it was Marisa who earned the victory and the title. But, really, is there a wrong choice between these two incredibly hot SI models?Thanks so much for voting and participating in the tournament. It went well enough where I'm nearly certainly going to do it again later in the year. Obviously, there will be a new crop of rookies, and rankings/seeds will change because of more appearances & covers from the veterans. I also developed a system that will factor in the results of every single match of this year's tournament into rankings/seeds for the next one. (What a great exercise in Excel!) If you have any suggestions for other ways to improve the tournament, please let me know.For posterity's sake, here are the final brackets. Those, and all other tourney info, can also be found here.

Dominique Piek is at yet another SI event tonight for the Super Bowl. Hard to believe she'd be so involved with SI if she wasn't in the issue again.
Oh my goodness, I am hoping this is true. I think Dominique is in my top 5-10 SI models of all-time. Obviously, not in terms of her resume, but just in terms of how attractive I think she is.
i know emily's going to be in it. i was talking about the cover. try to resist your knee-jerk response at mocking every post i make.
anyway, that kathy ireland reference made me think they're going to have a ton of models in this year's issue. in the first 24 years, SI never had more than 7 models in each issue. for the 25th anniversary, they more than doubled it to 16.
in the past decade the number of models has been hovering around 17-20, with around 5-7 rookies. they could be doubling the rookie class this year, so figure 12-15 veterans and maybe 10-14 rookies, they could end up with the most models ever, even before counting the "all-stars".
I agree with you, slowen. The most rookies ever was in 2000, when there were 13 of them. That's also the year with the highest model count overall - excluding the years with all-stars - at 22. So, it's not unthinkable that SI will have a dozen rookies and 12-18 veterans, which could have them near 30 models, not including the all-stars, of course.
I still think that the cover will be a group shot with several of the "still young enough" all-stars. Think Kate, Heidi, Bar, Brooklyn, etc. So, no, I'm not talking about Cheryl Tiegs or Kathy Ireland. Of course, there's no evidence of Brooklyn being in the magazine this year (I don't think), but I'm just giving you my thoughts on what I think is the most likely cover.
One last reminder --- The tournament that I've been running over in the competitions forum is in the final match. Marisa vs. Elle. So, go vote, if you'd like.

Unfortunately, I just read in the latest issue of SI that the swimsuit issue is confirmed to be coming out on Feb. 18.
It was part of a promo for the "50 Years of Beautiful" TV special that will be on NBC on Feb. 3.
The exact words were, "What's the best way to get ready for Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary Swimsuit Issue, which hits streets on Feb. 18? With a two-hour special looking back at the first half-century of Swim."
Oh, well.

I couldn't help but laugh at this line: "They wore swimsuits I'm not quite sure what you expect" ... for some reason, I had visions of bikini-clad SI models in a chemistry lab trying to find the cure for all diseases, or bikini-clad SI models building homes for charity. Or whatever.
I love the discussion going on. Keep it up... it makes me feel like all of the effort to put together and run this competition is worth it. :dance:

Yup magazine comes out on the 18th, i think they had to push the date back for some reason because everyone was reporting the confirmed date to be the 11th

When the first pic was posted this morning, I actually searched Twitter and found the account. They had just posted the same pic three different times, and it looked like a spam-type of account... almost no other posts. Now, that same search on Twitter turns up nothing, so they must have deleted those tweets. There was nothing more to see than what you already did, though.
And, yeah, why the 18th?!? Bummer!

Any news about Yamila, or Daniela? They were both cover girls.
I haven't heard any news about either of them for SI 2014 - not new shoots anyway and they weren't at the 50 year thing a few days ago either.
I haven't heard of anything, either. But, I do remember Daniela being the subject of one of those "Throwback" posts on SwimDaily, and I'm quite sure I remember them showing a video of them interviewing her (at the SI offices, I guess.) In the interview, she had a robe on that is very much like one worn when doing a photoshoot. So, this is obviously just complete speculation, but I say, "It's possible!"

Latest result:#16 Marisa Miller - 60%#9 Irina Shayk - 40%#16 Marisa Miller will face the winner of Josie Maran vs. Nina Agdal, to be revealed tomorrow, in the Quarterfinal Round of the Main Draw.My spin: Marisa continues to look the part of a contender for the championship, as she disposes of Irina in the Quarterfinal Round. Some models have been the beneficiary of a favorable draw in the tournament, but Marisa has not been one of those. Her Round 1 match was against Rachel Roberts, who had destroyed her competition in the Qualifying Draw. But, Marisa easily advanced to Round 2, where she faced another tough test, Chrissy Teigen. Again, Marisa advanced easily. Since then, she's gotten past #17 Petra Nemcova, #1 Kathy Ireland, and now #9 Irina Shayk to advance to the Semifinal Round. She has earned it!
