The point was reinforced at last night’s party at Kowloon for Bar Refaeli, who landed the cover of this year’s edition of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The Israeli glamazon, who dates Leonardo DiCaprio and will be the host of MTV’s relaunched House of Style (and did not appear to be wearing a lick of makeup), didn’t have to think twice when asked how she prepared for her all-important SI shoot. Crunches? Bikram? One of those crazy detox diets Gwyneth writes about in GOOP? Uh, no. “They told us to eat a lot,” Refaeli said. “Hamburgers, hamburgers, hamburgers. I was really enjoying myself.” Sigh. Refaeli went on to note that the eating continued even on the set, where all the models were encouraged to dig in to every catered feast. “It’s not about that fashion look,” Refaeli noted. “They want curves. They want you to fill out the suits.” Speaking of “that fashion look,” let it also be noted that, as Refaeli was talking, Eliza Cummings was tucking into a serving of fried rice in the corner. The U.K.’s new It girl and a proper hipless androgyne, Cummings confirmed that she’s in New York to walk at the fashion week shows. “And then in London,” she added, “I’m doing practically everything. The Israeli hottie was over at LaGuardia Airport in New York City to promote the new Southwest Airlines plane, a 737-700 wrapped in Sports Illustrated swimsuit imagery. As for her cover honors, Bar told press that finding out that she got the spot was the best news ever, and an actual dream-come-true. “It was my dream. Q&A Bar Refaeli: Sports Illustrated Cover Model By Tim Morrison Monday, Feb. 09, 2009 It's that time of year again. Started in 1964 as a way to fill a winter lull in sports coverage, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has become one of the most eagerly anticipated magazines of the year. Sports Illustrated (which, like TIME, is owned by Time Inc.) estimates that the franchise reaches some 66 million people, including 4 in 10 adult American men. As befits such a massive enterprise, the cover is a closely guarded secret; even the model featured on it isn't informed until the last minute. TIME caught up with this year's cover girl, Israeli model Bar Refaeli, just an hour after she found out. How did they tell you that you were going to be on the cover? They just invited me to the agency and told me I had an audition. My agent got me into his office and everyone was here, and a camera crew and posters of the cover. My first thought was just like, you know, why is this here? Why are you tricking me? I was speechless for a few long minutes. Which doesn't happen often. Did you think they were going to choose you? You know, the competition is so big and all the girls are so amazing and all the photographers are so good — I'm sure each and every picture is just incredible. I knew I was probably in the running but I had no idea. (See fashion photos from New York's International Center of Photography.) This was your third year in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. The previous two years, were you sitting there with your fingers crossed? The first year I didn't expect it at all. Last year, when they came to Israel, I thought, Hmm, they came to my home country, maybe, you know, there's a reason for it. But I didn't get the cover, and it's OK because working with Sports Illustrated is such a big compliment anyways that it's not even a disappointment. Now that I am on the cover I understand how exciting it is. Who was the first person you told? The first person I called was my mom, because she knew already. So I called to shout at her. She'd known for a few days. I'm like, "How can you do that?" She always tells me everything. Is it true you've been modeling since you were eight months old? Yes. Since I was 8 months old till I was 12, I did commercials and ads and cute little stuff for kids. Then I had braces on my teeth; they took them off when I was 16 and then I started modeling more seriously and doing more fashion. What was your first job? I don't remember what the word is in English, but you know those things they put around babies' necks when they eat? A bib? Those things. But the ad is still on, to this day. It's really weird. They're still using that 23 years later. You're Israeli. Are you voting in the elections? I am in New York, so I can't. How do you think they're going to go? I actually don't know who I would vote for. If I knew I was going to, I'd probably research more. I think I'd probably go for [Foreign Minister Tzipi] Livni, but I don't know. So I guess you've got a big day planned. Oh my God, they've got a few days that are nonstop press, which I am delighted to do. I wouldn't care if they'd asked me not to sleep for 72 hours. When they tell you you're on the cover you're not going to sleep anyways. Basically the celebration starts in New York and then goes on to Vegas which is a huge thing. And you're actually pictured on the side of the plane that you're flying to Vegas in? I'd heard that, but I don't know, I don't know yet. These Sports Illustrated people, they know how to hold a secret. Let's wait and see. Would you rather have the Sports Illustrated cover or be on the side of a plane? Oh, Sports Illustrated. That's something that is there forever, you know? It's like a collector's item. And the plane, they would take it off probably after a few days. But both are really cool. So what are you doing next after this? I'm shooting a show for MTV; we're starting right after all the parties for Sports Illustrated. And then I have work, work, work, work. The show is called House of Style. They used to do it before and now they're bringing it back. So it's very exciting. The year hasn't started yet and it's already been the best I've ever had. NEW YORK – The only secret more guarded at Sports Illustrated than the identity of the annual swimsuit cover model is how that secret is finally revealed to the cover model. Most models think they will be told a week or so in advance in order to prepare them for the upcoming media blitz and travel demands that come with being that year's cover girl. The truth is the model isn't told until a few hours before the cover is revealed. When Bar Refaeli walked into her modeling agency, located in a quaint office on the second floor of a nondescript building in New York, on Monday afternoon she thought she was there for an audition and fitting for an upcoming MTV show. It was a meeting she was hoping to postpone because she was still upset about not getting the cover, figuring like most, if it was going to happen she would have known by now. As soon as she opened the door of her agent's office, however, she was greeted with a blown-up picture of this year's cover sitting on a chair and Sports Illustrated swimsuit editor Diane Smith, who handed a speechless Refaeli a bouquet of flowers. "Oh my god," said Refaeli, welling up with tears after seeing herself on the cover. "Wow, wow…wow." "Isn't it gorgeous?" asked Smith. "Aren't you gorgeous?" Refaeli was then congratulated by her agent, Scott Lipps, and everyone else at her agency, One Management, who had done their best to contain their excitement before finally letting go as if they were at a surprise party. As she received one congratulatory hug after another, she exclaimed, "I feel like I'm getting married." While she might not be getting married, Refaeli knows that she will be fielding countless questions about her significant other, Leonardo DiCaprio, in the upcoming days as she embarks on an exhaustive media tour. That doesn't necessarily mean she will answer any of those questions. As tightly as the secret of the cover model is kept, Refaeli seems just as adamant about keeping her relationship with the actor private. That much was evident as she deflected questions about DiCaprio with the same skill as a politician while talking to Entertainment Tonight and other outlets just minutes after being shown the cover. "I've been getting those questions for years," she said. "I always answer them the same way. I don't talk about my private life." Her life, however, changed forever at 5:16 pm EST, about five hours after she was first shown the issue, when a 20-foot billboard of this year's cover was unveiled on the corner of 53rd and Broadway, across the street from the Ed Sullivan Theatre where the Late Show with David Letterman was being taped. Letterman later officially revealed the cover on his show about six hours later Monday night with Refaeli set to appear as a guest on the show Tuesday. "What? I'm going to be on Letterman? Wow!" Refaeli said when being briefed on her upcoming schedule. "I can't believe this. It's been my dream to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated since I was 15 and I finally got it. I still can't believe it."
