Jessica Alba Visits 'Anderson' with Her Mom

Friday, May 11, 2012 5:00AM

post-17383-1336766171_thumb.jpg

On today's Mother's Day episode, Jessica Alba joins Anderson with her mom Cathy, and Anderson shares a special Mother's Day surprise from Alba's husband, Cash Warren, and their daughters, Honor and Haven.

Alba, who is emotional after seeing the video, says she hasn't seen her children in five days. Jessica smiled and tells Anderson, "Thank you for doing that! I miss them."

The actress says she embraces motherhood, saying, "I'm the oldest of 14 cousins and I've been changing diapers since I was 5 years old. I always knew I was going to be a mom. Then when I got pregnant, I had this awakening where I wanted to protect my child from everything that I possibly could. So I did all this research for trying to create the healthiest and best environment for her, and found out that there are all these toxic chemicals in baby products."

Jessica created The Honest Company, named after her first daughter, Honor. Alba's company sells non-toxic baby products from diapers to sunscreen.

Heard

"The Rum Diary" star Amber Heard is in talks to become the latest femme fatale to join the cast of Robert Rodriguez's sequel "Machete Kills," which will be distributed by 20th Century Fox.

Danny Trejo stars alongside returning thesps Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez and series newcomers Mel Gibson and Demian Bichir.

Pic, which starts production this month in Heard's hometown of Austin, Texas, finds the titular ex-federale (Trejo) recruited by the U.S. government to stop an arms dealer (Gibson) from launching a deadly missile. Heard will play a manipulative assassin code-named Miss San Antonio.

Thesp, whose breakout perf as the title character in Jonathan Levine's still-unreleased 2006 horror film "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" led to a starring role on Kevin Williamson's USA series "Hidden Palms," was last seen playing Johnny Depp's love interest in "The Rum Diary." She recently starred on NBC's "The Playboy Club" and has wrapped the indie pic "Syrup."

Heard is repped by CAA and attorney Karl R. Austen.

Alba and her youngest daughter, Haven, strike a pose

How To Woo An Eco-Conscious Crowd

By Whitney Pastorek

Jessica Alba is not a scientist, nor has she played one on TV. But she is a mom, and she's done a lot of research. "I read a book called Healthy Child Healthy World when I was seven-and-a-half months pregnant, and my eyes were opened to all of the toxic chemicals that are in everyday household and baby products," Alba says. "So I went to the author of that book, Christopher Gavigan, and I hounded him for a year. I said, ‘I appreciate you've given me a handbook, but you haven't given me a solution. Let's make the solution.' " Together, they developed a baby-care and household-cleaner company eco-friendly enough to calm her nerves, with a flagship product that's every new parent's largest recurring purchase. "We felt like the disposable-diaper industry was the greatest area of opportunity for innovation," Alba says.

Win on the basics

Consumers often forgive eco-friendly products for small failings, like deodorants that fade by evening. But diapers can't leak. Honest creates absorbency with a wheat, corn, and wood-fluff mix and did independent testing--finding, it claims, that its diapers achieve up to 35% more total absorption than conventional and other eco-friendly diapers.

Speak through design

Eco-conscious parents are often young and hip, so you can't just sell them on an ingredient list. Honest's product design is influenced by French soap makers and designers like Alexander McQueen. "You spend more time changing your kid's bum every single day than anything else," Alba says. "Why not have it be more pleasant?"

Prioritize properly

The diaper is more than 85% biodegradable, and though Alba relies on her science-minded team for the specifics, her direction is more gut based: She cares most about cleansing the materials that touch babies' skin. "I do love the planet, but the health of my child comes first," she says. Now the company is working to green the rest, like the tab that fastens the diaper closed.

Hide nothing

Alba's consumer expects purity of product, so her website keeps the details honest, too: Paper for fluff comes from certified sustainable forests; its baby wipes are biodegradable. "I wanted a company that's transparent," says Alba. "I was sick of people saying, ‘This is our green line, it costs a dollar more,' but it's the same stuff that's in everything else. They deleted one fragrance, but it still has tons of carcinogens. Like, really?"

Jessica Alba: I Felt "Objectified" As a Young Actress

Celebrity News May 15, 2012 AT 8:00AM By Zach Johnson

Jessica Alba is more than just a pretty face with a hot body.

Early on in her career, however, the actress had a difficult time making people believe that. When she was given the lead role on Fox's Dark Angel, Alba, was forced to wear super-sexy outfits in order to appeal to the show's predominantly male audience.

"I had a show that premiered when I was 19. And right away, everyone formed a strong opinion about me because of the way I was marketed," Alba, 31, tells the June issue of Marie Claire. "I was supposed to be sexy, this tough action girl. That's what people expected."

Even when she dressed demurely for red carpet events, Alba's body took center stage. "I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable," she recalls. "I wanted to be chic and elegant!"

These days, that's exactly what she is. "She has the perfect body, sexy with curves," designer Donatella Versace, 57, raves. "She is true to herself. She always looks fresh, never vulgar."

Alba -- mom to daughters Honor, 4, and Haven, 9 months, with husband Cash Warren, 33 -- admits her transition from sex symbol to style icon didn't happen overnight.

"Now that I'm older, I've learned how to own it, but I'm still not very overt," Alba says of showing off her sexier side. "There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself. It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I'm going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge."

Alba began working with stylist and reality star Brad Goreski, 34, 18 months ago. "She was made to wear color. I encouraged her to play with it," he says. "We started with denim, then bright coats and floral pants, and they all look great on her. Now she's even going with bold color on the red carpet."

The actress and Honest Company founder's day-to-day look is always trendy and -- most importantly! -- practical. "I'm not going to wear stilettos, for example -- even kitten heels are kind of pushing it -- during the day," she says. "I wear boots, ballet flats and sneakers, but mostly boots. They're stable, easy to wear."

She adds: "I have so many scarves. When the weather changes, you can layer them for instant warmth. And they'll cover everything -- the vomit, the food that's been flicked on me, everything."

Alba doesn't miss her days as a sex symbol, either. "I like to get positive attention," she tells Marie Claire. "But if I have a choice between someone noticing in a negative way what I'm wearing and going, 'What was she thinking?' or someone not noticing what I'm wearing, I would rather not make a statement at all and just have a good conversation instead."
