CBS All Access and director Josh Boone‘s (The New Mutants) new adaptation of Stephen King‘s “The Stand” will premiere on CBS All Access on December 17, with new episodes of the 9-episode limited series arriving on a weekly basis. Pretty Little Liars”: Horror-Heavy Reboot in the Works from “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” Creator

 

Canceled just three years ago, ABC Family/Freeform’s series “Pretty Little Liars” is already getting a reboot over at HBO Max, and the new take is said to be “horror-tinged.”

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Riverdale,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) is developing the HBO Max series, titled “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,” with Lindsay Calhoon Bring.

“Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago…as well as their own.”

    “In the dark, coming-of-RAGE, horror-tinged drama Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe — in a brand new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.”

Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement, “We’re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements.”

“Pretty Little Liars” ran for seven seasons from 2010 to 2017, and it was followed by two short-lived spinoff shows. Sara Shepard wrote the original novel series it’s all based on.

Netflix is Developing a Live-Action ‘Conan the Barbarian’ TV Series

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been trying to get a new Conan the Barbarian movie off the ground for a while now, but it looks like the property is instead being turned into a TV series over at Netflix. Deadline reports that the streaming service is developing a live-action series based on the iconic Robert E. Howard-created sword-and-sorcery character.

Deadline’s Nellie Andrews notes, “I hear the project, from Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder Media, is the first in a deal between Netflix and Conan Properties International, owned by Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment. The pact gives Netflix the exclusive option to acquire rights to the Conan literary library and develop works across TV and film, both live-action and animated.”

Netflix is currently seeking a writer/director and showrunner for the project.

Schwarzenegger played Conan in the 1980s feature films Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, and he had recently expressed interest in coming back to reprise the role.

Jason Momoa took over the role of Conan for 2011’s Conan the Barbarian.

The character of Conan the Barbarian was created by Robert E. Howard in 1932, introduced in a series of fantasy stories that were published in Weird Tales magazine.

Trick ‘r Treat’ Director Michael Dougherty Directing Series Adaptation of Clive Barker’s “Nightbreed”

We had been hearing rumblings about a “Nightbreed” television series for the last several years, and Clive Barker himself has revealed tonight in a chat with Coming Soon that Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) is on board to direct! “It’s exciting, after 30 years, to go back to these characters and find out who’s still speaking to me, who wants their story told,” Barker told the site “My tongue isn’t in my cheek when I say that as when I start a piece, it’s listening. The writing is a piece of listening, I’ve always said I was a journalist and what I was reporting on was the space between my ears.” Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw) is writing the planned series with Barker. Interestingly, Dougherty is also working on HBO’s “Hellraiser” series. Clive Barker wrote and directed the 1990 feature film Nightbreed, an adaptation of his novella Cabal. In the film, “A troubled young man (Craig Sheffer) is drawn to a mythical place called Midian where a variety of friendly monsters are hiding from humanity. Meanwhile, a sadistic serial killer (played by filmmaker David Cronenberg!) is looking for a patsy.”

Amazon Heads to the “Unknown” Parts of America with Anthology Series

 

Everyone’s trying to find a new angle into the anthology and this new one mixes urban legends with true crime.

Craig MacNeill (“The Twilight Zone”, “Castle Rock”) & Clay Chapman, the duo behind SpectreVision’s SXSW horror film The Boy, have teamed up with Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films to develop the horror series “Unknown” at Amazon, reports Deadline.

   “Unknown” is a psychological horror anthology series that plunges into the corners of the American landscape, probing the intersection of folklore and our bloody history of true crime.

 

It sounds as if this anthology series tackles a new story every season, as opposed to each episode.

“The first season is centered around an estranged brother and sister, who return to the Texas Killing Fields, only to encounter a dark spirit that inhabits the region from their childhood.”

The series will be produced by Amazon Studios and Kilter Films.

What We Do in the Shadows’ Spinoff Series “Wellington Paranormal” Getting US Premiere in July!

 

In addition to FX’s series, the world of “What We Do in the Shadows” was also expanded upon with the spinoff “Wellington Paranormal,” focused on the film’s easily-manipulated police officers, Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary. From creators Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the series premiered in New Zealand back in 2018, and it’s now getting a US release.

“Wellington Paranormal” has been acquired by HBO Max and The CW, and the series will premiere on The CW on July 11, 2021. It’ll then be available on HBO Max the next day.

The half-hour series follows the aforementioned duo, as well as Cori Gonzalez-Macuer’s Nick, as they try to keep Wellington safe from various spooky beasties.

The third season of “Wellington Paranormal” just recently launched over in New Zealand, and we’ve been told that filming on a fourth season is already underway.

Dexter”: Michael C. Hall is Back in New Teaser Trailer for Showtime’s Revival!

 

 

 

America’s favorite serial killer is back.

Michael C. Hall stars in Showtime‘s upcoming revival of “Dexter,” a continuation of the original series that will essentially allow Showtime to make up for the show’s original finale. Check out the official teaser trailer below, giving us our first look at Hall as Dexter in nearly 10 years!

Jamie Chung (“Lovecraft Country”) joins Hall in the revival, with the cast also including Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah and Jack Alcott.

    “Set 10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami.”

Clyde Phillips is back as showrunner for the 10-episode revival, arriving in Fall 2021.

“Dexter” ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013.

Lionsgate Developing an ‘American Psycho’ TV Series Adaptation; Possibly a ‘Saw’ Series as Well?

 

 

Directed by Mary Harron, the 2000 film American Psycho brought Bret Easton Ellis’s novel to the big screen, and it looks like Patrick Bateman is next headed to the small screen.

Speaking with Deadline this week, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs previewed all things Lionsgate TV that are currently in the works, including an American Psycho series.

And, potentially down the road, a television series set in the Saw universe?!

“American Psycho is in development,” Beggs reveals. “We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation.”

Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva adds into the report/interview, “Beggs would not elaborate further, but I hear that Lionsgate TV is in early talks on a TV series adaptation of the book of Saw, from Mark Burg and Oren Koules’ Twisted Television. The Saw film franchise, one of the longest-running horror franchises in history and which has grossed over $1 billion at the box office, has long been rumored as ripe for a TV expansion.”

Spiral: From the Book of Saw will be released in theaters on May 14, and it’s clear Lionsgate has plans for the franchise beyond that movie. As we recently reported, early development has reportedly already begun on another feature film, and it looks like Lionsgate is also keeping the door open to expand upon that “Book of Saw” with a small screen project.

“Mindhunter”: David Fincher and Netflix Reportedly Talking About a Potential Third Season

 

Last year, David Fincher opened up in a chat with Vulture and revealed that Netflix’s “Mindhunter” is at least temporarily on hold at the moment, with Fincher admitting that there just weren’t enough people watching to justify the cost and the work involved in bringing another season to life. At the same time, however, he’s been keeping that hope alive.

Fincher had noted in a chat with Variety back in November of last year, “At some point I’d love to revisit it. The hope was to get all the way up to the late 90’s, early 2000’s, hopefully get all the way up to people knocking on the door at Dennis Rader’s house.”

It sounds like the future of “Mindhunter” is still very much up in the air, to be clear, but it’s worth noting that Small Screen is reporting this week on talks between Fincher and Netflix.

The site reports, “It’s been revealed to us by sources close to Netflix that discussions between the streamer and David Fincher for a Mindhunter Season 3 are back on.”

Small Screen’s source reportedly told them, “All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season. It’s still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.”

For now, it’s probably best to take this one with a grain of salt. But ya never know…

David Bruckner Directing TV Series Adaptation of Rami Malek’s Apocalypse Podcast “Blackout”

 

The end of civilization as you know it.

Starring and executive produced by Academy Award Winner Rami Malek, the popular podcast series “Blackout“ is getting a small screen adaptation, Deadline reports this week.

David Bruckner (The Night House) is on board to direct the TV series adaptation, Deadline has announced today. Bruckner has previously directed The Signal, the “Amateur Night” segment in our V/H/S, the segment “The Accident” in our Southbound, and monster movie The Ritual. Bruckner is also working on our upcoming V/H/S/94, which is coming soon.

Deadline notes, “Season two of the apocalyptic thriller will be released early this summer with Malek reprising his role of Simon Itani, a small-town radio DJ fighting to protect his family and community after the power grid goes down nationwide, upending modern civilization.”

The “Blackout” adaptation will come from Chernin Entertainment, Endeavor Content and QCode. Rami Malek will executive produce the series, which doesn’t yet have a home.

Announced by Shudder late last year, “Slasher: Flesh & Blood” is coming soon, the eight-episode fourth series of the horror anthology series that kicked off back in 2016.

“Slasher: Flesh & Blood” will stream exclusively on horror platform Shudder in the US, Australia and New Zealand on August 12, we’ve learned via Rue Morgue today.

Rue Morgue notes, “Two episodes will premiere that day, followed by new ones each week.”

 

“Slasher: Flesh & Blood” follows a wealthy but dysfunctional family gathering for a reunion on a secluded island. Their old wounds and competitive rivalries flare up when the family realizes a masked killer is on the island, intent on cruelly picking them off one by one.

“Flesh & Blood is like Knives Out done by John Carpenter and takes the franchise to a new level with a gripping and scary story about family secrets, intrigue, murder and legacy,” says Shudder’s Craig Engler. “We’re incredibly lucky to have David Cronenberg, an icon of the genre, giving a standout performance as the fearsome, intimidating patriarch of the Galloway family who sets the tone for the shocking twists, crazy mysteries, and total mayhem that’s to come. Shudder members won’t want to miss a single episode of this incredible event series.”

Canadian horror legend David Cronenberg has joined the cast for the new season, which will also continue the show’s trend of bringing back cast members in new roles. Returning from previous seasons are Paula Brancati, Jefferson Brown, Patrice Goodman, Sabrina Grdevich, and Christopher Jacot. New faces this year include Rachael Crawford (Heartland), Jeananne Goosen (The Walking Dead), Sydney Meyer (Departure), and Alex Ozerov (The Americans)

“Slasher” is developed and produced by Shaftesbury and created by Aaron Martin. “Slasher” is executive produced by Aaron Martin, Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie, David Ozer, Thomas P. Vitale, and Ian Carpenter, who also serves as showrunner; Adam MacDonald is director.

Garbage Pail Kids” Animated Series Coming to HBO Max from Danny McBride and David Gordon Green

 

 

The gross-out “Garbage Pail Kids” franchise is headed back to the screen, THR reports today, this time with an animated series that’s being developed for the HBO Max streaming service!

The series comes from Topps, Tornante and Rough House Pictures, with Danny McBride and David Gordon Green (Halloween) co-creating and writing the series for Rough House.

Josh Bycel (“Solar Opposites”) is also writing and co-creating alongside the duo.

“The expectation is that the animated series will be family-friendly and appeal to audiences of all ages,” THR notes.

The Garbage Pail Kids brand was launched as a line of trading cards from Topps back in 1985, spawning a live-action feature film in 1987. The brand is still going strong to this day, most recently seeing the launch of a line of books that are written by R.L. Stine. New waves of trading cards are also frequently released, along with toys and all kinds of other products.

The titular Garbage Pail Kids are of course a gross-out gang not afraid to play with boogers, blood and vomit, with the brand created as a spoof of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.

Norman Reedus and AMC Turning 1960s Exploitation Film ‘Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!’ into a Series

 

Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”) continues to make very interesting choices with his bigbaldhead production company, recently setting into motion a small screen version of the slasher franchise Sorority House Massacre. Reedus is clearly a fan of deep cut genre films, and Deadline reports that he’s tapped another property from the past for a series adaptation.

Through bigbaldhead, Reedus will produce a television series adaptation of Russ Meyer’s 1965 exploitation film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, a movie he has loved since childhood.

Reedus is developing the project with AMC Studios.

Deadline details, “Utilizing the movie’s tale of a trio of badass go-go dancers on a cash-fueled rampage through the desert, Faster Pussycat the TV show aims to pay homage to the original but also go beyond the fast cars and karate kicks to home in on the strong female characters and the overturning of cultural norms that was deeper in the bones of the movie.”

“I’ve been watching Russ Meyer’s film since I was a kid, wearing my Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill! shirt to school,” Norman Reedus told Deadline this week. “It’s safe to say I’m beyond inspired by Russ’ style of filmmaking and I am over the moon excited for the opportunity to reimagine this story for the modern world.”

In the original film, “Three go-go dancers holding a young girl hostage come across a crippled old man living with his two sons in the desert. After learning he’s hiding a sum of cash around, the women start scheming on him.” Tura Satana memorably starred as Varla.

The Battersea Poltergeist’: Blumhouse Acquires Story of the Longest Documented Poltergeist Haunting in History

 

Billed as the “longest documented poltergeist haunting in history,” the tale of “The Battersea Poltergeist” was told in BBC Radio 4’s podcast, and we’ve learned today that Blumhouse Television and Michael Seitzman’s Maniac Productions have secured the rights to the podcast.

The press release explains, “The company is developing the first season of a scripted ongoing series and a companion unscripted series, titled Blumhouse’s Ghost Story.”

“Additionally, the companies have also secured Shirley Hitchings’ life rights, as well as the rights to her and James Clark’s book, The Poltergeist Prince of London: The Remarkable True Story of the Battersea Poltergeist,” the official announcement continues.

“The wildly popular docu-drama podcast, written and presented by Danny Robins, was the #1 drama podcast worldwide on Apple Podcasts and features the voices of Dafne Keen (Logan) and Toby Jones (The Dark Crystal). The podcast documents the strange events focused around Shirley Hitchings in 1956 that were investigated over a 12-year period, the longest documented poltergeist haunting in history. The podcast boasts nearly 3 million streams and downloads since its launch, and has been at the forefront of the boom in audio storytelling in the UK. It was co-produced by Robins with Simon Barnard for Bafflegab Productions and commissioned by Rhian Roberts for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.”
