There were moments that I really, really loved but there were also a few things that I didn't like. I think I want to see it again though, get a second look at it. The Last Jedi didn't really have any hype leading up to the release of the movie. I think the Last Jedi is by far the superior movie to the Force Awakens. Michael* Posted December 30, 2017 Share Posted December 30, 2017 What's interesting is that the box office performance of a franchise movie will quite often live or die by its hardcore fans and whether or not they're prepared to come back for multiple viewings. In this case, many of them will probably be coming back just to try and make their minds up about it. I personally loved Last Jedi, but looking around at some of the initial reactions online, I can't help thinking that a lot of people (not necessarily here, just in general) are forgetting that they saw the original trilogy as children and are seeing the new one as adults. Two scenes in particular stood out for me... ...the silent destruction after Holdo goes to light speed and Luke walking out alone to face an army of AT-AT Walkers. Incredible visuals are mostly taken for granted these days, but those shots were seriously stunning. My jaw dropped as an adult, so I can only imagine how that would have felt to a kid. The space casino stuff was slow-moving and a bit laborious, but the only thing that was a disappointment to me overall was the shortage of info on Snoke. Apart from that, I was glad that Rian Johnson didn't give in to cheap or obvious moves. If Star Wars is really dead now to certain so-called fans, then long live Star Wars, and stories that move on from the originals. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't think I remember the sound well enough to describe it, but he loved that. You're right, it's a different experience for a child. Star wars and Indiana Jones were frequently on the background during visits to my uncle's family. I never understood the backlash against the teddy bears. I thought it was interesting/cute... The original trilogy still has a lot of iconic scenes and overall I prefer the practical effects over the CGI. (this is why I still like Ridley Scott although he is declining as a director) The practical effects made Star wars feel weighted and immersive. It's very interesting to see how the original star wars trilogy was made. It involved an enormous number of miniaturized models and numerous set pieces. Classic franchises like Blade Runner, Alien/s, Indiana Jones, etc. did the same thing. The last Jedi is packed with immersion breaking CGI like most action movies these days. Michael* Posted January 2, 2018 Share Posted January 2, 2018 It's interesting to note the mention of Ridley Scott there too, because you can certainly set your watch to the kind of rinse and repeat cycle that many Alien fans have seemingly been stuck in recently ("I hope Prometheus isn't just more xenomorphs running around" (Prometheus is released) "Where were all the xenomorphs?" (Alien Covenant is released) "That was just more xenomorphs running around"). The same thing seems to be happening with Star Wars at the moment, only we're not quite as far down the rabbit hole just yet. Give it another two years until the build-up to Episode IX, we'll have probably circled back around from "Last Jedi was adventurous and different and I hate that, give me the Star Wars of old" to "I hope Abrams doesn't play it safe like he did with Force Awakens, give me something adventurous and different".
