Island time, it’s a thing. Although the exact cause is unknown, it’s believed that it has something to do with unpredictable weather and endless hours spent under the tropical sun. When on island time, as we are, schedules and routines are pretty much obsolete. This means that there is sometimes unexpected downtime, but that can as quickly turn into immediate shoot time. We dealt with a bit of that today.

Despite getting up early and gathering in the restaurant for some food before beginning the day, we had to wait for clouds to pass and ended up lingering around the breakfast table for quite some time. When the light was good though, the team sprang into action and headed to our location for the day, Gaya Island Resort’s outside barbeque area.

Despite the relatively small location, Jacques Weyers managed to find and create a variety of interesting sets to shoot Tanya Mityushina.

The unpredictable nature of island time can often cause stress, but thankfully the team’s on-site masseuse, Mr Flare, was available to work out some of tension that had built up in members’ backs.

The video crew also snuck in some time with World Swimsuit newbie, Kara Del Toro. The Texan firecracker was great to work with and will have her first full day of shooting tomorrow!

Today was a good day. The weather was superb, the girl incredible, the photographer on fire.

From dawn to dusk Jacques Weyers shot Kara Del Toro a.k.a. the American Dream. Bubbly, bright and beautiful, she was a joy in and off the camera.

The shoot started on the beach in front of the resort, gradually edging towards the water and the resort's water sports gear. Soon enough, Kara was on a SUP board, drifting out into the blue beyond. The crew also dabbled in the sport, but only Tropical Bro managed not to embarrass himself.

After breaking for lunch we headed to Tavajun Bay, the resort’s private beach and a now familiar location for us. Shooting on a small boat and across the beach, Jacques and Kara did great work before the video crew got in some time with her as well.

Exhausted but happy, the team returned to the resort for dinner and an early night – pre-dawn start tomorrow!

Today was a good day.

This morning started with a pre-dawn boat ride to a nearby island so that we could catch the sunrise from there. Still groggy and shaking off the sleep, we quietly sipped our coffees as the boat bounded across the ocean. Our final destination was a narrow strip of beach littered with shells and coarse sand - perfect for our shoot with Zippora Seven.

The New Zealand native, who is now more a citizen of the world, is the epitome of a laid-back, surfer girl. Sun-kissed skin, crystal clear blue eyes, and beautiful locks of golden blonde hair. Quiet but confident, she looked absolutely at home playing in the shallow waters and chilling on the beach, and Jacques snapped some amazing shots.

We broke for lunch and then headed to our favourite local beach, Tavajun Bay. The afternoon light was excellent and Jacques had Zippy rolling around in the sand and splashing in water. P.M.C. and Mr Flare then stole her for some social media content, and afterwards they were joined by Tropical Bro to film the final parts of her hero sequence.

Zippy was lovely to work with and by the end of the day she felt like part of the family.

On our way back to the resort we were treated to a beautiful Bornean sunset.

WORLD SWIMSUIT BORNEO 2016 DIARY - DAY 13

Today we were blessed with a late(r) start, 8:30. A special trip had been arranged to go on a river cruise to go see Proboscis monkeys, and hopefully capture some good content while on the water.

We took the whole team along, including all four of the models that are currently with us: Zippora Seven, Genevieve Morton, Bianca Koyabe, and Tana Boshoff. The trip started with a short boat ride from Gaya Island Resort to Kota Kinabalu, after which we hopped on a bus for an almost two-hour journey. En route we stopped at a local gas station and picked up some interesting snacks including “Duh! Tomato” crisps and delicious lime ice lollies.

Yacht life. That’s what accurately describes today, seeing as we spent just about the entire day on Little Princess II, Gaya Island Resort’s smaller motor yacht. We left from the jetty at 5:30, only returning for lunch, and then back on board until about 18:30.

The morning was tough, but worth it. The light was superb, and Jacques had the yacht doing circles in front of the resort as he snapped away at the seductive Tana Boshoff.

Despite the relatively small size – the yacht is only a 39-footer – Jacques creativity prevailed and he managed to get some amazing, diverse shots while cruising, including two during which Tana was almost dangling overboard and needed some extra hands to keep her secure.

After Tana’s shoot for the day was done, we dropped her off and picked up Zippy Seven, Genevieve Morton and Bianca Koyabe for a beautiful sunset cruise which we’d paired with a Malibu Rum shoot.

Although it looked like we might have been sailing for disappointment due to cloud cover, the lower the sun sank the more beautiful it looked and the actual sunset was exquisite.

A long and productive day behind us, we caught a boat into town and when to a local karaoke bar called The Place to relax and unwind.

WORLD SWIMSUIT BORNEO 2016 DIARY - DAY 15

Yesterday we ended the day with a trip to the main island, Kota Kinabalu, where we went to an amazing karaoke bar and sang our hearts out for a few hours. At the time it felt like a great idea, this morning not so much.

We met at the jetty just as the sun was starting to peek over the horizon, and set off with for a small beach which is home to an even smaller fishing community. Initially the light wasn’t playing along, so we spent some time scouting for the best spots and observing the locals going about their daily business while Merle Titus a.k.a. Merry Merle did her magic and made Bianca Koyabe look even more stunning than she already is. While we were pottering about, the resort had arranged a small boat to bring us a much needed breakfast. Then, without warning, it was time to shoot!

WORLD SWIMSUIT BORNEO 2016 DIARY - DAY 16

And so our trip has come to an end, not with a whimper but with a great big bang! But, before that we still had some work left to do.

We started our day with a short boat trip to the now familiar fishing village beach, where we’d be shooting the rest of Genevieve Morton’s shots. The weather, as it had been that last few days, was absolutely perfect and our only concern was avoiding Pacquiao, the resident alpha male dog.
