Jem and the Holograms is an upcoming 2015 American romantic musical fantasy comedy film based on the toy line and 1980s animated television series of the same name. Directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Ryan Landels, the film is scheduled to be released on October 23, 2015.

In a hyper-linked social media age, an orphaned teenage girl, Jerrica Benton, becomes an online recording sensation, and she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt - one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles - in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.

Somehow, the 'in name only' genre still appears to be kicking. :unsure:
 
You could only really pull off something as outlandish as Jem by doing it as a daft eighties period piece, and by not trying too hard to re-imagine it for today's audiences. That way, old fans look at the movie fondly, new fans embrace the energy and silliness of it all.

Looks like they're trying to appeal to the Pitch Perfect/Step Up/Glee crowd which is cool and all but doesn't fit the original at all. They could've gone all out for this but looks a little lackluster.
