SI Swimsuit Issue General Discussion

Hello, long long time lurker, (almost) first time poster. I wish my first long post (and thread) was a positive post, but I adore the SI Swimsuit Issue, there's so much about it that's great.

But It just seems like recently the issue has been trying to be more like a high fashion magazine than what (to me) it actually is: a celebration of beautiful, pretty, and athletic women wearing less clothes than usual. ;) It's Sports Illustrated, so I think an SI Swimsuit Issue model should look like she has some athletic ability rather than looking like she'd snap in half with mild exertion (cough*angelalindvall*). I think prettiness in a SI model is just as important as beauty, if not even more so.

Now, I like skinny models, I'll admit that. Izabel Goulart, Alessandra  , Ana Beatriz, theyr'e some of my favorite and sexiest models of all time. But I think an SI model should have some curviness and athletic tone to them. Am I wrong? :(

There've been some great ones recently, like Marissa and Petra (goddesses!) but there've been a lot more that I didn't like. I really value my issues from the late 1990s (and up to maybe about 2001) more than the most recent ones. Despite the presence of Marissa and petra, who usually save an issue from itself.

Sorry if these biased opinions are cotnradictory, but there ya go. :p What do you think, please?

Michelle Alves - kinda pretty and deliciously toned (those abs!!), but could use more curves

May Andersen - god, no; stick to Vogue, please

Ana Beatriz Barros - one of the most beautiful faces on earth but she has no hips and little tushie

Elsa Benitez - can't justify it,, but she's fantastic in SI, for me

Yamila Diaz-Rahi - not really my favorite type, but great anyway

Isabeli Fontana - great!! so lovely...

Alicia Hall - kinda pretty, but she doesn't know how to pose at all; I'll give her some slack for lack of experience modelling though

Bridget Hall - beautiful, but definitely not what I'd call "pretty"; her body just seems to define the kind thats more suited to high fashion than SI (we'll see more like that in a moment)

Melissa Keller - a less remarkable version of Marissa Miller... still good, though

Shakara Ledard - yummy; almost makes me forget Tyra (...almost!)

Noemie Lenoir - as luscious as Tyra but in a different way

Angela Lindvall - gorgeous (under the right conditions)... but SI? no, please no!

Michelle Lombardo - curvy? oh my yes... not really "pretty", though even though she's kinda beautiful

Vanessa Lorenzo - I wish she'd done a lot more shoots for SI, she coulda been classic! Spanish heat

Marisa Miller - the quintessential SI babe (...one ofthem, anyway)

Jose Moran - another classic

Fernanda Motta - another beautiful but not pretty one; her sexy Latina bod and attitude make it work though somehow

Carolyn Murphy - see Bridget Hall

Petra Nemcova - beyond classic, eternal; pretty, beautiful, sexy toned bod... sigh...

Chandra North - cute, but more of a fashion type body than SI

Daniela Pestova - classic!! my very first favorite SI babe and Victoria's Secret model

Audrey Quock - lovely, but I just don't see why they chose her for SI at all

Frankie Rayder - see Carolyn Murphy, but even less pretty; I do like her as a fashion model, dont get me wrong...

Daniella Sarahyba - adorable face, body is (like Michelle Lombardo) curvy... she's able to bring something new and different to SI but still keep it SI, if you know what I mean =)

Molly Sims - great for SI, but I never liked her for some reason (could be my pretty bias)

Mallory Snyder - beautiful, but not... you know ;)

Jessica Van Der Steen - Carolyn Murphy/Bridget Hall/etc... bonus points for towheaded-ness

Veronica Varekova - I like Marissa more, but she's nice

Jessica White - nice, but I keep thinking of Tyra :(

Angela is in her 30's and has two children, so I'm guessing she exercises a lot, otherwise she wouldn't look nearly as good.

I think you're making the mistake of believing that looks are a good indication of how athletic a person is. They really aren't. There are a lot of very unhealthy beautiful people out there, and a lot of unattractive healthy people.

At the risk of contradicting myself, I'll say this: virtually none of models featured in SI are the most athletic people, but you can be sure they do workout regularly, otherwise they wouldn't look as good.

You've got a point there. ;)

I said my post was contradictory. All I would say is that, for me anyway, exercising to stay in supermodel fighting trim and exercising to do vigorous athletic activities result in two different "looks." Marissa LOOKS like she can surf, play football, basketball, Bikini Twister, etc. For me, that's all the difference. :)

This is true. I remember Gisele saying she doesn't work out ( which I kind of find hard to believe with the way her body is.. those abs! ). I'd say a lot of models don't work out.... most are naturally thin and the rest probably smoke more than they eat.

But models like Marisa Miller, well, you can just tell she works her butt off in the gym... look at that stomach!

I've been disappointed in the SI Swimsuit Issue myself lately. I agree with steve that the models aren't what they used to be. But I think there is a bigger problem. The SI Swimsuit Issue in the 80s and most of the 90s was the only place to go to see beautiful, half-naked women outside of porn. Now, with FHM, Maxim, Stuff, etc. guys can see beautiful, half-naked women every issue, every month (not to mention the Internet, where two clicks from any site will get you to porn in the privacy of your own home). Thus, the SI Swimsuit Issue has lost a lot of it's relevance and, as such, has resorted to gimmicks (3D camera and glasses of 2001, trying to recreate their most famous pictures in 2005, body paint in every issue - the last three years) or simply trying to sell quantity over quality (which has seemed to me to be the case the last couple of years). If it were a TV show, I would say it had jumped the shark.

EmRata briefly mentioned SI recently and like, sounds like she did not enjoy the experience at all, no wonder she didn't come back:

But it turned out Prince had made another Instagram painting of me, and this one was still available. The piece was a reproduction of a photo from my first appearance in Sports Illustrated. I was paid $150 for the shoot and a couple grand later, when the magazine came out, for the “usage” of my image. I hated most of the photos from that spread because I didn’t look like myself: The makeup was too heavy, there were too many extensions in my hair, and the editors had kept telling me to smile in a fake way. But I did like a few of the images of me in body paint and had posted one of those pictures, which Prince then reused for this “painting.”

She liked the pay check enough to do a second year. The body paint pictures she took were very good. She looked amazing in those.

Tbh I think at that point it was more about the exposure and the potential of getting a cover than the money that made her go back. She didn't get the cover when everyone, including herself probably, expected her to and once you hit that point, it's pretty obvious you'll never get the cover and you just move on... I'm sure it's the same that happened with other girls like Gigi, Barbara and Lais for example. I don't even like Emily and I was personally happy she never made it to the cover, but let's not act like she's not one of the biggest modeling names in the mainstream media these days, for good or bad, the fact is she is wayyy more famous than all the current SI and VS girls combined.

I am however, cackling at the styling comments, they are solid gold

Oh, man. Thanks for posting, I hadn't heard.

That genuinely bums me out. For better or for worse, she's responsible for a lot of the real estate in my brain.
