Game of Thrones

I thought it was the worst Game of Thrones episode I've ever watched.  I can appreciate that they aimed for a "meek shall inherit the earth" theme but it almost completely misfired.  The only scenes I liked was the one with Brienne and the one with Jon going back.

4 out of 10 for the finale

I rate this season as roughly 7 out of 10, with ep 3 and 5 being the standout episodes: 8/10 and 7.5/10 respectively.  I gave Season 7 a 6.5 out of 10 if I recall correctly, and the rest of the show is a 9 out of 10.

For me, I want to make my own ending for the show and pretend this one never happened.

"Game of Thrones Stars Share Their Honest..."

The title of that is misleading. All the reactions were from people scared they would ruin something and get in trouble. There was no way to get an honest reaction from them before it had aired.

^^  I guess we are seeing different things. To me the body language and words they chose seemed similar to what I saw from the Marvel cast leading up to the last movie. Basically, nervousness about saying something they shouldn't and generally being uncomfortable with that possibility.

It's, of course, possible that they didn't like it and that's explains those interviews, but I didn't see it.

(I always allow for the possibility that I'm wrong, because I am so much )

Few random thoughts:

Spoiler

Jon going north of the wall with the wildlings was predictable but the right ending for his character, to me.

It's too bad the four siblings were all separated from each other, so much so that they couldn't help each other if they wanted to. They went through so much to get back to each other, but now they needed to separate again.

As much as I was ready for the show to be over, I would start watching an Arya spinoff tomorrow. The possibility of seeing new worlds and people could be interesting. Of course, she would eventually hit Essos, but it could be interesting to see what she found along the way.

Three minor unimportant things I noticed:

I assume Drogon destroyed the iron throne unintentionally as a result of his grief over Dany. I don't imagine dragons are supposed to understand the symbolic importance of something like that.

All the Unsullied were going to Naarth with Greyworm because it's where Missandei was from? Maybe I missed that minor point.

Dothraki? Leaving? Staying?

I liked the scene with

Spoiler

the King's Guard Unit history.

As an avid reader and collector of military unit histories, I can understand

Spoiler

her desire to record the life and death of Jaime Lannister.  She even gives a bit of a positive spin to his life.  From kingslayer to protector.

It's the least one can do to honor the countless men who died on the battlefield, repeatedly exposing themselves to death and ultimately sacrificing themselves for an idea, for duty, and most often, brotherly love.  This is of a world that barely anybody understands and that no longer exists anymore except for the very, very few.  And perhaps use their great example to inspire us to higher levels of achievement in our own lives.

To me the rest of the episode made no rational/narrative/character sense.  It was also very cheaply made.   I was thinking that the series was better off without episode 6.  The end being

Spoiler

Arya and the white horse, with the rest up to the audience's interpretation.

IT seems to me the central theme of ep 6 is "the meek inherited the earth" and forgiveness.  It reminds me of Europe in 1945 and most strongly Germany and the Germans in 1945.  Once it was the most ambitious, warlike great power in Western civilization and it turned pacifist.  I would have liked to see the finale explore forgiveness in a more well-executed way.

Spoiler

Perhaps Westereos is now so broken that it's turned pacifist as well ruled by peaceful people who are themselves broken in some way.  With funds directed to post-war reconstruction ... warfighting will not get the first priority.

All I wanna say is that HBO fucked me up with True Blood's last season which was trash, they have now fucked me again with this GOT season that was also trash, I was by no means expecting a happy ending but the execution of this was so so poor! It all felt rushed and choppy and the amount of unexplained shit they left was mindblowing, i.e Jon being a Targaryen wasn't mentioned once when they were deciding who was going to reign, the point of Cersei's pregnancy? never explained but the worst for me ...

Spoiler

So Jon kills Dany, understandable because sis went batshit crazy but am I seriously expected to believe she got murdered and the Dothraki did nothing? Seriously, what the fuck! The Dothraki would have killed Jon, Tyrion and everyone involved in that crap, after Dany's dead there's literally no mention of the Dothraki at all!!!

I will say this, the storyline for S8 was trash but the cinematography was beautiful this season, the last episode had easily some of the most visually stunning moments in the show: Dany addressing the crowd with Drogon behind her, Drogon in the snow/ashes when Jon finds him, Drogon & the throne and Drogon taking Dany, Jon seeing Ghost again. Sansa getting ready at the end of the episode was a simpler scene but also also beautifully done and I appreciated the hair detail a lot, she finally found herself. As much as I loathed Sansa the whole show, her standing up for the North even against her brother was great, probably my favorite part of the episode plot-wise.

Drogon's animation was great.

His behavior, when he sees Daenerys is dead, is really well made, like a sad dog or fox when they mourn.

It reminded me of this:

Drogan destroying the Iron throne but not Jon Snow.?  Maybe it knew that the throne killed her , the other two dragons, and forced him to genocide?

It seems to me that Emila Clarke's acting in S8 is way better than in previous seasons

I told Hubs that as well.

Maybe in the future, Mr. Martin would care to write that story.

There are other interviews/speaking turns that I've seen that further indicate that that the principle cast didn't like the ending or, when faced with softball questions got defensive.   Overall it seems like Jon Snow and Dany were disappointed in how their roles ended.  Jaime lannister is the most open about his disappointment on how his character was handled over the course of seasons.

The last night, the last show.   After eight epic seasons, HBO’s GAME OF THRONES series has come to an end.

It is hard to believe it is over, if truth be told.   The years have gone past in the blink of an eye.  Can it really have been more than a decade since my manager Vince Gerardis set up a meeting at the Palm in LA, and I sat down for the first time with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for a lunch that lasted well past dinner?  I asked them if they knew who Jon Snow’s mother was.   Fortunately, they did.

That was how it started.  It ended last night.

I had no clue, that afternoon at the Palm, that I was about to embark on a journey that would change my life.   I had optioned books and stories for television and film before.  Some had even been made   There was no way to know that this one was going to be different, that this pilot would not only be shot,  but would go on to become the most successful show in the history of HBO, win a record number of Emmy Awards, become the most popular (and most pirated) show in the world, and transform a group of talented but largely unknown actors into major celebrities and stars.   Even less did I imagine that I would somehow become a celebrity as well… and if truth be told, I’m still not sure how that happened.

It has been a wild ride, to say the least.

I want to thank people, but there are so many.   There were forty-two cast members at the season eight premiere in New York City, and that wasn’t even all of them.   And the crew, though less visible than the cast, were no less important.  We had some amazing people working on this show, as all those Emmys bear witness.   David & Dan assembled a championship team.   The directors were incredible as well.   I should start naming names, but then I’d miss someone, there were so many.   But I do need to mention David Benioff, Dan Weiss, Bryan Cogman (the third head of the dragon, as I said in the recent VANITY FAIR piece about him), and of course the great team at HBO, headed by Richard Plepler.   Any other network, and GAME OF THRONES would not have been what it became.  Most other networks, this series never gets made at all.

I could go on and on… and have, as I’ve been writing this post in my head… but there’s really too much to say.   Parting is such sweet sorrow, the Bard wrote.  In the weeks and months to come, I may post about some of my favorite moments from the making of this show… now and again, when I am feeling nostalgic… but just now, there are so many memories, and no time to do them all justice.

Let me say this much — last night was an ending, but it was also a beginning.   Nobody is retiring any time soon.   David and Dan are going on to STAR WARS and other projects beyond that.   Amazon scooped up Bryan Cogman, and put him to work on developing shows of his own, as well as helping out on their big Tolkien project.   Our brilliant cast has scattered to the four winds, but you’ll be seeing a lot of them in the years to come, in all manner of television shows and movies.   Our directors are keeping busy as well.   I suspect that you have not seen the last of Westeros on your television sets either, but I guess that all depends on how some of these successor shows turn out.

And me?  I’m still here, and I’m still busy.    As a producer, I’ve got five shows in development at HBO (some having nothing whatsoever to do with the world of Westeros), two at Hulu, one on the History Channel.   I’m involved with a number of feature projects, some based upon my own stories and books, some on material created by others.   There are these short films I am hoping to make, adaptations of classic stories by one of the most brilliant, quirky, and original writers our genre has ever produced.   I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan.   And then there’s Meow Wolf…

And I’m writing.   Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is.   THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done.  I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.

How will it all end? I hear people asking.   The same ending as the show?  Different?

Well… yes.  And no.  And yes.   And no.   And yes.   And no.   And yes.

I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget.   They had six hours for this final season.   I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them.   And of course the butterfly effect will be at work as well; those of you who follow this Not A Blog will know that I’ve been talking about that since season one.   There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet.   And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…

Book or show, which will be the “real” ending?   It’s a silly question.   How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?

How about this?  I’ll write it.   You read it.  Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet.
