Goddard has managed to imbue her designs with a rebellious spirit that is as feminist as it is feminine. Her most recent collection, for spring 2018, was a breakthrough: From the moment Edie Campbell opened the show, wineglass in hand, clad in an exquisitely refined high-waisted ivory dress—a dress that would suit Kate Middleton!

The extended Goddard clan includes Rihanna, who was an early adopter of the Molly smock; Cindy Sherman; and, of course, Edie Campbell. The clique even has a fairy godmother: Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo is so taken with Goddard’s creations that she wanted to wear a gauzy dress to last year’s Met ball until her husband, Adrian Joffe, put his foot down and reminded her that the exhibition was titled “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between”—and that it would behoove the honoree to wear one of her own creations.

Taking place in the new Topshop show space on Floral Street, guests were greeted by all the signs of a feast being prepared in the kitchen, with bags of potatoes, chopped veg and bottles of red wine all lying in wait, a subtle nod to last season’s sumptuous (and raucous) dinner party.

Then, Edie Campbell led the proceedings smoking an e-cigarette and dancing on tables; this season, she reprised her role as chief party girl, being the first to grab and bottle of red and pour herself a glass. She opened the show in a black long-sleeved crop top and long layered tulle skirt, worn low on the hips. The models that joined her party wore various riffs on this look — crop tops and long layered skirts, in hot pink, red gingham — while others opted to wear the ruched smock dresses, lamé gold off-shoulder gowns and sheer tulle party pieces Goddard has made her signature.

Excerpts from i-D, 18 Feb 2018

Like last year, the show was opened by Edie Campbell. She entered in a slim cropped boob-tube, voluminous black skirt, and printed, check tights. The basic elements of that look — crops, volumes, checks, muted tones — would repeat throughout. It was, Molly said, a little bit about “growing up” and not wanting “to get stuck being labelled as 'pretty' or 'girly'" — especially when girly is often a synonym for "prim or wishy-washy”. These clothes were all about showing the attitude of the Molly Goddard girl, “confident, uninhibited and having fun”. After walking, Edie plonked down at a kitchen table and began drinking and eating. It set the tone for the show's eruption of happiness, the kind of smiley setting aside of the pouting norms of fashion we love Molly for.

...

Of course that big frilly flounce of orange tulle, ruffled and shaped into huge layers of tulle. And yes, Edie too, who was of course everything.
