"Box-office analysts were left with a sizable serving of crow on their plates after their predictions that X-Men: The Last Stand was certain to remain the top ticket seller over the weekend were broken up by The Break Up.According to studio estimates, the Jennifer Aniston-Vince Vaughn romantic comedy opened with $38.1 million, well above the $25-30 million that was predicted, while the X-Men movie tumbled 67 percent to $34.35 million, the biggest second-weekend decline ever for a Memorial Day tentpole film."

maybe we won't see XMen 4 after all.

Did Fox learn a valuable lesson after dragging their feet for so long getting X-Men 3 together after X2 proved to be a hit? Probably not -- it's likely just the super-powered box office of the franchise that has motivated them to get another mutant movie into theaters for 2007. Because a rushed production schedule yielded such magnificent results the last time. Does Bryan Singer have another project they need to beat to theaters or something?

At the Cine Expo currently going on in Amsterdam (how does anyone get any work accomplished in a city of legalized narcotics and prostitution?), Fox promised the gathering of exhibitors that Wolverine would be ready to slice up stoned fans and other moviegoers some time next year, with a prerecorded message from Jackman himself (also a producer on the movie) confirming the news.

We still don't know much about this adamantium-laced X-spinoff (which still has no director officially attached), aside from the fact that David Benioff (Troy) has been working on the script and that it'll be a prequel story, or at least contain a significant amount of flashbacks (which reportedly include Sabretooth). My recommendation would be to avoid incorporating anything from that supershitty Origin series Marvel published a couple of years back. Logan's really a sissy rich boy named James Howlett? Spurious!

LA Daily News reports that X-Men executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner is currently working on the cast for a 4th installment in the movie franchise. Renegotiations would be needed to secure the main stars of the previous three films.

Donner says "The newer cast members are signed, and the older cast members are not." Considering the older names involved -- Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Romijn, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin -- that could run into a huge chunk of money.

All that's putting the cart before the wolverine, of course, since Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as the manicure-challenged mutant superhero in his own film. "Next, we're going to do 'Wolverine,' but not before the end of the year because he's in the Baz Luhrmann film," she says of the filmmaker's untitled Australian epic with Nicole Kidman. However, "We have the script and are working on it."

Shuler Donner reports, "We also have 'Young Magneto' in development."
