Christy Turlington a picture of health at Big Apple Gala

28 SEPTEMBER 2005

Former supermodel Christy Turlington stepped back into the limelight when she lent her support to a benefit gala in New York this week. The catwalk queen, who has kept a relatively low profile in recent months, stepped out with her husband Ed Burns in an effort to promote healthy lifestyles.

The 36-year-old was looking typically radiant when she arrived at Manhattan's Metropolitan Pavilion in an empire-waisted emerald green gown and tailored black coat. She and her movie star partner had gone along to join in the "Organic Elegance" banquet in support of the Continuum Centre for Health and Healing.

Once inside the venue the guests were treated to a banquet of organic cuisine while they watched performances by the leading lights of yoga and tai chi. Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan was also on hand, providing some rather more conventional entertainment in the form of a medley of songs from her new album.

Christy, who has been practising yoga for nearly two decades, has become synonymous with healthy living. Aside from acting as an unofficial spokeswoman for the discipline which she credits for her happiness, she also supports a variety of cancer charities and anti-smoking lobby groups.

And the mum-of-one is only too familiar with the high price many people pay for not looking after themselves. Her father, a long-time smoker, lost his life to lung cancer, while she was herself diagnosed with early stage emphysema just before she kicked the habit.
