What were your favourite gigs you saw this year?

01. REGINA SPEKTOR

Love Regina, and I was so bummed last year when she came to Australia without doing the west coast. She did the full lap of the country this time round, and she didn't disappoint. Just an exquisite performer and a lovely person all round

02. LAURA MARLING

Same as Regina - this year was her first time in my part of the country, and I'd been waiting a long time to see her. By far my favourite gig I've seen at the shitty venue she played in :ninja:

Awesome support from Boy & Bear too!

03. MASSIVE ATTACK

Epic. Wicked sound, and a stage/light show I'll remember for a long time.

04. WASHINGTON

I totally fell in love with Megan Washington this year. She's just as amazing and charming on stage as in her records

05. THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

First time I've seen these guys, but I've loved them for a long time. Kinda funny having 7 of them crammed onto a really tiny stage, but they sounded as good as I hoped they would.

06. SARAH BLASKO

I can't sing her praises enough. I saw her 3 times this year, including two nights in a row on her last tour. She blows me away every time

07. THE DEAD WEATHER

Never had the chance to see The White Stripes live, but I'm glad I got to see Mr. White do his thing at least once. One of those bands that you really have to experience live to fully appreciate.

08. THE POLYPHONIC SPREE

Everyone in the crowd got to wear Native American headdresses. 'nuff said :ninja:

09. SPOON

Love these guys to bits. They weren't particularly engaging with the crowd, but their live sound is amazing.

10. THE PANICS + THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

A great band in their own right, but playing with a full orchestra behind them was pretty magical, especially on a beautiful night in the park.

Everything I've seen this year has been at the very least a solid night's entertainment, but in terms of 'top dogs' I'd say these four:

Todd Rundgren

Supergrass

Sir Paul of McCartney

Gorillaz

Bonus points for 68 year-old Paul, who played a three hour show that included an impromptu performance of Ram On.

1. pg.lost / Ovum / Fragile in Hong Kong - nice location, great audience, fantastic atmosphere, great bands, great choice of songs

2. Long Distance Calling / Ef in Bielefeld - my fav band of the moment and a nice new discovery in post-rock in a small and cozy venue

3. Constants / Caspian in Bochum - deserved more recognition, but still a nice atmosphere

Donbot, can I just say how incredibly jealous I am that you've seen Regina Spektor and Laura Marling? :persuazn:

As for my own list, I'll stick with five instead of ten. For some reason, I don't feel as if I've been to as many gigs this year as I would normally...

01. The Black Keys (and The Walkmen)

02. Grizzly Bear (and Beach House)

03. Joanna Newsom (and Roy Harper)

04. Interpol (and Surfer Blood)

05. Yeasayer (and Bulletproof)

Let me project some jealousy back at you for the Grizzly Bear / Beach House gig :chicken:

I'm pretty excited to see Beach House at the Laneway festival next year.. it's a pretty wicked lineup. They haven't posted the playing times yet though, so I shudder to think who I'm going to miss out on seeing.

I just saw Muse last weekend too, which I have to add to my list. I'm not a mental fan, but I have to say it was the most impressive stage design I've ever seen.. that's one I'll remember for a long time too.
