to have a proper, fully developed mustache? I find the idea quite comforting. I'm not talking about one of those Latino/white hipster guy bum fluff things, I mean something righteous and thick but not too '70s porn star. I think arguably all my heroes in life have sported a nice bit of lip carpet at one time or another, maybe there's something in that?

Help me make this momentous decision, friends.

Yours faithfully,

Frederick

Mustaches are OK only with a beard. Otherwise they just look funny on a young man. They make you look older in a very uncomfortable way. But, whatever floats your boat, man. I just think that mustaches are hilarious.

i think it is acceptable as long as the look is good for you. I mean it is very appealing on some guys when on others they really should never do it. You may need to get opinions from people who see it on you. As for what is considered modern and what is out; that seems to be a tricky question since a lot of styles of the 70s, 80s are becoming reinvented. I can see fashion more depends on what looks best on you and that some modern styles do not look good on everyone.

I think if you're white and have dark or black hair and have a moustache like I rarely see on some people, it looks utterly disgusting and ridiculous. Especially if the rest of your face is shaven.

I'm not really a big fan of facial hair though. Particularly the moustache. When latino and fuckin middle eastern guys have it... god that looks foul cause they don't even grow it properly.

It's a good thing guys with mustaches aren't trying to attract you.. hehehe

I am not the biggest fan of mustaches but I think on some guys it actually does look good; though I am not a fan is a bf has it since most of the time it is scratchy. I once had a boyfriend with a Goaty (however that is spelled) and he looked good with it but it was coarse hair that was less desirable for close contact so I would prefer not having it.

Frederick, I went to see the Eagles Of Death Metal a little while back and pretty much all the band were mustachioed up! Now I know they had the whole 'rock' thing going on - but the ladies were all over that look.

I mean, come on, how cool does Jesse Hughes look here? > post-11221-0-1446075444-83214_thumb.png

Yeah, you comb that righteous 'tache!

And really, who's more manly than Thomas Fucking Magnum?

magnumf.jpg

Got the chest-rug too.

I grew one once for a play I was doing - and this was a few years ago, before any hipster irony thing kicked in. Have to say I kind of liked it, and it didn't detract from anything female-wise either.

But then again I am a latino - so probably, like those 'fucking middle eastern guys', I wasn't even growing it properly... <_< :cain:

However, Frida Kahlo notwithstanding, it is totally unacceptable for a young woman...

you mean I have to shave...

JK

There are guys that definitely look good in mustaches.. would be interesting to see the Baron in one... for some reason when I picture a Latino in a mustache I think of the mustache Guy William's had as Zorro.

That's because the ladies who went to see the band were undoubtedly obsessed with their music. They were fans. Fans will go crazy over the people they look up to. Using bands and people who live that culture of rock and metal is a weak example.

He looks great because it personifies the American rocker look, which he would naturally being part of a rock band.

And really, who's more manly than Thomas Fucking Magnum?

Erm, Johan Hegg? Really though, the beard and facial hair in general is sort of a package deal with the rock/metal scene.

But then again I am a latino - so probably, like those 'fucking middle eastern guys', I wasn't even growing it properly.

The point I was getting at, and admittedly the way I explained it was was a very crude and poor, was that people who seem to grow them these days e.g. young people, and I singled out middle eastern men and also latino males because those are the people I typically see with facial hair. When I said don't grow them properly, and you help to make my point here by selecting rockers and other people who emerged from the 80's and 90's, was that the modern day look of the authentic and rad manly look of aviator shades, leather jackets, long hair and a moustache or whatever is just a smooth-skinned, most likely pubescent male who looks like he's never found a razor. It doesn't look manly, it just looks odd - particularly due to the lack of image (clothes ect) to support it. Obviously that's their personal style, but to me it looks scruffy and odd.

With regards to the middle eastern males, they usually always have scruffy facial hair. It's almost like they don't shave. A lot of them even have unibrows.

^I thought I'd made that 'fan' point clear. Obviously when you are 'famous' (and particularly in an industry as style-orientated as the popular music scene) you can get away with all manner of looks that the man-on-the-street may have more problems with...

And really, who's more manly than Thomas Fucking Magnum?

Erm, Johan Hegg? Really though, the beard and facial hair in general is sort of a package deal with the rock/metal scene.

But Thomas Magnum was no simple 'Rockstar'. And he certainly never sported a beard (well, sometimes he had a fair smattering of stubble after a 'heavy' few days...).

Magnum P.I. was ex-US Navy, and fought in 'Nam. He became a detective in Hawaii, and rocked that 'tache all over the islands. I know what you mean about the whole bum-fluff boys - but Magnum was a MAN! Like I said, he had the whole chest-rug thing too:

magrug.jpg

Though, in fairness, he did wear those aviators you mentioned. Well, it was the early 80's:

Mind you, I do sport a pair of aviators too - and I confess to having a leather jacket. But I've already been lumped in with one of your crass clichés on this thread - I don't wish to fall into another...

Come on - I'm arguing my case with Magnum!!!

Probably is just you though, azgirl... :/

My buddy and his brother, cousin, and friend at a golf tournament.

Later on they eventually died them black but no picture was taken of that.

My lack of facial prevents me from taking part in these exercises of awesome.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback, amigos. In terms of friends and family I would say that getting that first mustache out of the way is an important development. Once people know you're the kind of guy who might be inclined to grow one, it no longer seems strange and no one brings it up as a big deal when the next one inevitably comes about. That said, in terms of keeping one for a truly significant period of time, I remain unsure.

lol... my other bro just grew one too... he's wondering if the first compliment he's had on his mustache counts since it came from a lady with a beard.

i feel so left out :/
