Melody Thornton was a rising young star in hometown Phoenix, singing backup for local artists and performing the National Anthem for the Arizona Diamondbacks while attending college. Her Mexican maternal grandmother had been a singer for mariachi bands; her African-American paternal grandfather was a blues guitarist and her mother was a Mexican folklore dancer. Being the only Latina and African-American in The Pussycat Dolls means a great deal to her. “I think a lot of the audience can relate to me,” she says, “and that adds to the Dolls.” The first time she saw The Pussycat Dolls was on Christina Aguilera’s “MTV Diary.” “I loved the concept.” She recorded the show and played it back over and over. Studying that tape paid off. Melody was welcomed aboard in December 2003.

Thornton was born in Phoenix, Arizona to a Mexican mother and African-American father.[1] Her talent was first discovered at an elementary school talent show when she sang Mariah Carey's "Without You".

She saw the Pussycat Dolls on MTV and heard they were auditioning for a new group member. Thornton went to the audition and was recruited in December 2003. For her audition, Thornton only sang and was still accepted into the group. As with the other Dolls, she is a salaried employee of Interscope Records

Solo career

Thornton started her solo career collaborating with rapper Jibbs in the song "Go Too Far" in his debut album Jibbs feat. Jibbs. She has stated on her Official MySpace Blog and in several interviews for fans to keep an ear out for her music. Melody stated that she would like to have her solo album released soon with collaborations with many artists that she admires but are not very famous.[2] In an interview with CELEBRITYINTERVIEW.TV at the Cabanna Club in Hollywood, she confirmed that she has been recording and writing songs for her solo efforts. Thornton recently stated on an interview with Chilso that she would like to have a few Spanish songs to show her heritage and to get her learning her Spanish background
