Box Office update

‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Gets Box-Office Boost From War of Words

Paramount says it embraced the dialogue, and Martin Scorsese’s explicit and edgy black comedy posts a better-than-expected second week

The controversy over “The Wolf of Wall Street” appears to have helped it at the box office.

Director Martin Scorsese’s R-rated black comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio finished a solid fourth this weekend with $13.5 million on 2,557 theaters. That’s only a 28 percent drop from the $18.3 million first weekend for “Wolf,” and encouraging news for distributor Paramount, since a 50 percent hold is considered good and the severe weather on the East Coast probably cost it another million dollars.

The R-rated film’s explicit portrayal of the sex-and-drugs-fueled 1980s stock market boom has divided moviegoers, and the “C” CiinemaScore that it received after its opening made its long-term playability a question mark.

But the strong second week suggests the emotional discussions – centering on whether it glorifies the lifestyle of DiCaprio’s character based on real-life stockbroker Justin Belfort – aren’t hurting and may actually help it.”

“We embraced the controversy and dialogue, because ultimately, it makes more people aware of the film and curious, and we think if we can get people out, the film will speak for itself,” Paramount’s distribution chief Don Harris told TheWrap. “This weekend number is significantly above what we were projecting.”

The film’s roughly three-hour running time is a hurdle, too, but Harris said that moviegoers that have carved out time to see the latest Scorsese-DiCaprio teaming have found two things surprising.

“They say, ‘I didn’t think it was that long, and I didn’t expect to laugh so much,” he said.

It’s up to $63 million domestically since opening on Christmas Day, and the $100 million film financed by Red Granite now looks to have a shot at hitting $100 million domestically.

If “Wolf,” Scorsese or DiCaprio can get some love at next Sunday’s Golden Globes and the Jan. 16 Oscar nominations it should get a further boost.

“This is up there with Scorsese’s best work, and that’s why this film is going to do just fine,” said Harris. “The Wolf of Wall Street” scored a strong 76% among film critics on aggregrator site RottenTomatoes.com, with an even more impressive 79% from fans.

Variety article about  Wolf of Wall Street box office

‘WoMartin Scorsese's raunchy comedy has raked in $63 million and counting at domestic B.O.

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to controversy. And with his latest romp, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” the legendary director again has drummed up full-bodied brouhaha that has peaked audience curiosity and set turnstiles spinning.

This past weekend, “Wolf,” which some people have questioned whether it glorifies drug use and profanity, grossed an estimated $13.4 million, dropping just 27% in its second frame, making it one of the best holds of the weekend.

In a little over two weeks, the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill has grossed more than $63 million domestically, a strong result that falls in between such recent past successes as “The Fighter” and “True Grit.” (The latter grossed north of $175 million domestic; “Wolf” may top out at around $125 million.)

Much like “True Grit,” from the Coen brothers, as well as Quentin Tarantino’s controversial “Django Unchained,” Scorsese himself adds a level of prestige to “Wolf” that perhaps elevates the film to a slightly classier version of raunchy. So, too, does DiCaprio.

But what makes the gross for “Wolf” even more impressive is the film’s nearly three-hour run time limiting the number of screenings it can have in a day, as well as the restrictive ‘R’ rating.

Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said “Wolf” so far has capitalized on the water-cooler effect, adding that the film’s intent is to create dialogue debating the film’s controversial subject matter.

“There is certainly a lot of debate about the movie and the CinemaScore,” Moore said, referring to the film’s divisive ‘C’ rating, “but when you have a movie about excess, that can be very polarizing.”

“Wolf of Wall Street,” which is based on the autobiographical book by New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort, features the use of the f-word more than 500 times, making it a record for the most usages of that word in a single movie. But more than its adult language, the film has been criticized as being misogynistic, creating waves with some adult moviegoers including members of the Academy of the Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences recently.

Generally speaking, Scorsese’s films have featured heavily adult content, especially mob-themed films such as “Goodfellas” and “Casino.” Any one of the director’s past films likely has not been this controversial since “The Last Temptation of Christ” in 1988, when it was judged harshly as an auteuristic Biblical adaptation. That film earned Scorsese a best director Oscar nomination, though it earned only $8 million at the domestic box office.

Still, a few raised eyebrows hasn’t deterred Paramount from broadening “Wolf” to smaller U.S. markets. The studio plans to expand “Wolf” to north of 3,000 domestic locations on Friday. Pic currently is playing at 2,557.

“This movie sparks conversation,” Moore said. “You can see by how the movie is holding that people clearly are talking about it.”

Jonah Hill Still Can't Believe He's Friends With Leonardo DiCaprio
Jonah reflected on expanding his talents beyond comedy in his acceptance speech and also talked about how surreal it is to have worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. "I really want to thank Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese," he said, "which sounds crazy that I'm referring to them in a way that I actually know them, as opposed to abstract, heroic figures. I love those guys." He also took a guess at how they might be spending their morning. "They're probably on Mars right now, or wherever they hang out."
