i have a feeling this promotional circuit will see leo being the most animated he's been in years. talking about a crazy role gives him more opportunity to joke around and be silly and let loose a little bit, especially if he's in any double interviews with jonah. i am so excited, i cannot say that enough

By the way that new clip I posted from Wolf of Wall Street was shown on the Jonathan Ross show. Joanna Lumley was on the show but I just went on youtube to see the entire interview and they cut the clip out of the interview, that sucks. I really wanted to see the full clip

Review from IMDB :D :D

Okay guys. Sorry to those that will be upset by this news: It was better than American Hustle(of course, that's just my opinion). Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled review-ish type thing.

Yes, it's long. Nearly 3 hours, but the pacing worked for me and only a few scenes dragged on a bit but it was hardly noticeable. I thought the cast gave some very nuanced and subtle performances in such a huge, purposely over-the-top film and that really added to the feel of authenticity. Let's get right down to it, since I know this would be asked by everyone, let me rank the cast for you then I will go into details about their performances.

In order:
Leonardo DiCaprio
Jean Dujardin
Matthew McConaughey (very, very small role though)
Jonah Hill
Margot Robbie
Rob Reiner
Kenneth Choi
Kyle Chandler
Jon Berthnal
P.J. Byrne
Cristin Milioti
Jon Favreau

Leonardo Dicaprio: This is probably the most impressed I have been with him since The Aviator. He breathes some despicable yet charismatic life into a very complex anti-hero. There was also some great physical comedy that I have never seen from him that really impressed me, it was also one of the best segments of the film. I definitely see him as a contender for Best Actor and I would say he's in the 5/6 slot right now so anything could happen.

Jean Dujardin: A bigger role than I was expecting from him but it was a great performance. Very comedic but he was definitely a nice change of pace from most of the craziness that was in every couple scenes.

Matthew McConaughey: Practically no screen time at all and only at the beginning of the film. That being said, his one big scene (lunch with Jordan) was just perfect. He hit every note necessary and really opened the film in a great way.

Jonah Hill: I have to say, he had amazing chemistry with Leo. It was very caricature-y but he had a lot to work with and got to stretch his legs with a very crazy character. Though, with that being said, I must say in his one big scene without Leo when he was the 'main' actor, I couldn't wait for the scene to end. He seemed to get swallowed by the character in that scene or maybe it just went on too long(very possible) but something about it left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't really see him getting nominated at this point, and compared to the other supporting actors this year, I would agree with the decision if he wasn't nominated.

Margot Robbie: I don't have a lot to say here, she did justice to the character and her performance was fine. She was definitely in the film more than I originally expected (but with a 3 hours film, I suppose most supporting roles were). I don't see her getting nominated.

Rob Reiner: He was great in his opening scene and nothing he did after it would top it, but he did keep the energy of the character and I really enjoyed his performance.

Kenneth Choi: Whoever this guy is, he's definitely got the subtle comedic part down to a t. I really enjoyed him whenever he was on screen. Best of the smaller supporting characters, I would say.

Kyle Chandler: Not as intimidating as he probably should have come across but the performance didn't suffer too much from it. He was good enough to not take anything away from the film.

Jon Berthnal: Very charismatic and nice comedic timing, his scenes were quite entertaining.

P.J. Byrne: He was good but forgettable. Many other performances outshined him.

Cristin Milioti: Not given a ton of screentime and the character was boring but her big scene was very well done. She put the right amount of emotion into it and I thought she did a good job.

Jon Favreau: I like the guy but he just had nothing to do and did nothing with it.

The Q&A afterwards was really great, apparently the entire cast(besides Leo) was watching the film for the first time as well. Also, Jordan Belfort was there(and has a cameo in the film, at the very end).

Any other questions, I will try to answer the best I can.

Dujardin! I thought he was going to be cut!

1. Where does this rank in Scorsese's canon?

2. Do you see the Academy going for this?

10/10
The Aviator
Goodfellas
9/10
The Wolf of Wall Street
Shutter Island
Gangs of New York
Casino
8/10
The Departed
Hugo
The Age of Innocence

From the films I've seen. I might need to let the film stew awhile but for now, that's where it stands.

I think it actually has a good chance of getting nominated for Best Picture and I think the writing stands a good chance, as it was great. DiCaprio and Scorsese are probably at the 4/5/6 slots in their respective categories, so it could go either way for them but I think the scales may tip in their favor since this is just so much different from the rest of the Oscar contenders this year.

Wow, third best? That definitely intrigues me. So you think it was a good fit for him?

Let me ask this: does the story justify the runtime? Or do you think there was nothing Scorsese could've trimmed?

-------------------------

IMDb member since April 2005
I still feel like there was a few things here and there that could have been trimmed, but I definitely understand his reasoning for the runtime. The story being told was basically in it's entirety. There were a few gratuitous scenes but some of the scenes that were gratuitous were also just sort of happening during normal scenes that were necessary to more the plot so, I understand the runtime and I don't have a problem with it.

What fil had the better preformances/ensemble? American Hustle or WoWS?

-----------

IMDb member since April 2005
Well the ensemble for WoWS is so much larger there is a lot more to feed off of, but I guess collectively the American Hustle ensemble was better because it worked more as an ensemble. WoWS is basically off Leo's story and is very much him, him, him. He was very good, don't get me wrong, but yeah for now I'll say AH with the better ensemble.

Sweet. Ok. And, is the almost NC17 justified?

-------------

IMDb member since April 2005
More than justified, holy crap. There was SO much sex and drugs going on, I was getting exhausted just having to watch it. And here I thought American Hustle had a lit of swearing, hah, no. This film takes the cake with the swearing. It's like every 5th word is something dirty.

There are a few parallels that could be made with Goodfellas but while watching the film, I really didn't think about it whatsoever. Not until I try to think about specific things, would I come up with something. It's a completely different type of story, in my opinion, and with so much craziness in this film it's hard to compare it.

Also, I didn't say Jonah was bad, he was pretty good and like I said, had amazing chemistry with Leo so most of their scenes together are really well done.

So acting-wise, you really only see Leo as a contender?

Yes.

----------------

IMDb member since March 2012
Yeah, the beginning part. The script mentioned Gene Hackman narrating but they might have gone to De Niro if Hackman turned them down. Also, two more questions:

1. How would you compare it to Goodfellas, in terms of how much you liked it?

2. How good is DiCaprio's performance compared to the other lead actor performances this year? Forget about the Oscars, just give your opinion.

----------------

IMDb member since April 2005
1. I rate Goodfellas a 10 and WoWS a 9 but I have to say, WoWS is a LOT more fun to watch. That, and I haven't seen Goodfellas in years so I might need a refresher.

2. I haven't seen Matthew McConaughey yet and I'm sure he'll be in my top 5:
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Mads Mikkelsen, The Hunt
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
Daniel Bruhl, Rush

(If you count Bruhl in supporting, then Hugh Jackman for Prisoners is next in my line-up.

DAVID Beckham says that Brad Pitt should play him if a movie is ever made of his life.

The retired soccer star and heart-throb was initially stumped when asked which movie star he would pick to play him.

When the interviewer suggested Brad Pitt, Beckham jokingly said Angelina Jolie's partner would be a good fit.

"Brad would be the obvious choice," he joked. "I'd like Brad to be playing me. Him or Leonardo [DiCaprio]. One of the two … or Bradley Cooper. They're not bad-looking guys
