Teen Vogue June 2011

Over the course of an hour-long chat—in a midtown Manhattan hotel room with all of the window shades pulled down—there's one topic to which Selena Gomez returns again and again: her fans. It was for them, she says, that she recorded "Who Says," the sweetly upbeat first single from her forthcoming third album. "I just thought they needed it, because of bullying," she explains. "I hope it inspires them to be who they are." And it was those devotees—well, one tiny admirer in particular—who provided the impetus for Selena's successful Kmart clothing line, Dream Out Loud: "It all started from a little girl saying that she'd picked out an outfit just like mine," Selena says. (The collection, like her own wardrobe, tends toward the boho. "I like flow-y, open clothes, rather than tight-fitting," she says, "although I'm getting a bit more confident in my skin.")

It's not difficult to understand Selena's regard for her audience: Without them, the Texas native figures, she'd never have been able to go from being a mere cast member on Barney & Friends to starring in her very own Disney Channel show, Wizards of Waverly Place. But as much as the eighteen-year-old enjoys talking about her fans and insists that they "always come first"—a genuinely earnest-sounding sentiment that oddly echoes the old business maxim "the customer is always right"—Selena doesn't necessarily love it when others bring them up. "A lot of times," she complains, "the paparazzi will try to use them. They'll say, 'Your fans want this.' And it's frustrating because my fans are amazing: They love me, they support me. And I do everything for them. But the press? They don't care about me. They just want something on me that they can use. They just want to get that shot." If she seems a little embattled—although not (yet) embittered—it might be because interest in Selena has spiked since she began dating Justin Bieber, aka America's boyfriend. (In one particularly crazy incident, a picture of Selena hiding her face from photographers somehow sparked a worldwide rumor that a jealous Belieber had given her a fat lip.) But when she's asked directly whether apprehension ever caused her to think twice about striking up a romance with her generation's teen heartthrob, she says no. "I don't like to let the attention on me become a factor in the decisions I make," she says simply. Offered the chance to elaborate on the origins of their relationship, she demurs, as she has in the past: "We've always been friends."

In fact, Justin (at seventeen, a younger man) might have given Selena the full-court press. When he appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue last October, he mischievously suggested her as his ideal romantic-comedy costar. "He'd say those things," she explains, laughing, "and then he'd be like, 'Did you hear?' He's such a dork." She seems relaxed and genuinely happy, a marked contrast to the self-described "realistic" attitude she displayed during her first cover interview with Teen Vogue two years ago. Back then, Selena had recently split up with Nick Jonas, and she'd admitted, "Sometimes, when something is so nice and sweet, I just crush it. I don't mean to, but I don't want to be let down."

"When your heart is broken," she explains now, "you want to hate everything. You want to say, 'I don't believe in love; this is ridiculous. It's not supposed to hurt this much.' But at this moment in my life, I'm at a point where I want to be in love, to give my all and fall head over heels. I'm eighteen. I'm not going to marry anybody I'm with, and I know that. The next heartbreak I have, I'm sure I'll be like, How can I live without this person? But I'm still trying to dive in and enjoy it."

She's similarly determined to take pleasure in the transitional phase that her career has recently entered—in May, Selena filmed the final episodes of her Disney Channel hit. (The last season of Wizards will likely begin airing in the fall.) She was only thirteen when she shot the show's pilot, so she says that leaving her character, costars, and crew behind is decidedly "bittersweet," even as she looks forward to the opportunity to pursue more big-screen work. "I'm in a very crucial spot," she notes. "It's like starting over. I was trying to explain it to one of my friends, and he said, 'You'll be fine. People believe in you.' But when they're putting together a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, I don't think they're going to go, 'Selena Gomez would be great for this!' I'm not an option. It's humbling, having to go from this Disney high back down to having to fight for roles."

In many respects, her upcoming movie, Monte Carlo—in which she stars opposite Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, and Cory Monteith—looks like an ideal stepping stone. There's something decidedly Disney-ish about the mistaken-identity plot, but the look-alike characters whom Selena plays—Cordelia, a spoiled British socialite, and Grace, the good girl who temporarily takes over her glamorous life—are both, technically speaking, grown-ups. It's easy to imagine the film appealing to a slightly older audience, yet Selena does nothing on-screen that would alienate even her youngest followers, whom she affectionately refers to as her "littles." As she explains, "I just wouldn't want to do anything that might make them uncomfortable." And while certain other members of the post-Mickey set would find such a policy almost painfully limiting (if not downright impossible to adhere to), one senses that for Selena, it's a fairly natural fit. Perhaps that's why her fans seem to love her almost as much as she loves them.
