Jennifer Lee Morrow was born on February 5, 1962, in Hollywood, California; she changed her name to Jennifer Jason Leigh in honor of family friend and actor, Jason Robards. Tragedy struck her family early on, when her father, actor Vic Morrow, was decapitated in a freak helicopter accident in 1982 on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. Her mother, Barbara Turner, is an actress/screenwriter/producer, and divorced Vic Morrow in 1964.

Jennifer's sister, Carrie Ann Morrow, is a drug counselor and film producer, while her half-sister is actress Mina Badie (she has appeared in some of Jennifer's projects).

Jennifer's first film credit was a non-speaking role in Death of a Stranger (a.k.a The Spy Who Never Was). At 14, she attended method acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Institute. She also attended the Stagedoor Manor, an acting camp for teens in New York's Catskill region. In 1977, she received her Screen Actors Guild membership after appearing on an episode of TV's Baretta. This led to her first major speaking role in Disney's 1978 made-for-TV movie, The Young Runaways.

More roles in TV movies followed, such as Angel City (1980) and The Killing of Randy Webster (1981). In 1981, Jennifer dropped down to 86 pounds to play the part of an anorexic teenager in the made-for-TV film, The Best Little Girl in the World.

Jennifer then dropped out of California's Pacific Palisades High School, six weeks shy of her graduation, in order to fully pursue her film career and complete the film Eyes of a Stranger (1981).

Her big break occurred when she played the role of an innocent high school student trying to get action in the coming-of-age comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). She befriended fellow actress Phoebe Cates while shooting the 1982 hit and they remain friends to this day.

Jennifer appeared in numerous roles in the 1980s, including Grandview, U.S.A. (1984), The Hitcher (1986) and Sister, Sister (1987).

After being named one of "America's 10 Most Beautiful Women" by Harper's Bazaar in 1989, Jennifer won two Boston Society of Film Critics Awards (as Best Supporting Actress) for her roles in Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989) and Miami Blues (1990).

Jennifer was next cast in the Ron Howard hit Backdraft (1991), in a rare, straight-laced role. She also won rave reviews for her powerful roles in Rush (1991) and Single White Female (1992).

Jennifer continued turning in fine performances throughout the 1990s in films like the Robert Altman-directed Short Cuts (1993), the Coen brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) and alongside Kathy Bates and Christopher Plummer in Dolores Claiborne (1995), based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.

In 1997, Jennifer starred with Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange in A Thousand Acres and appeared in Faith No More's music video for "Last Cup of Sorrow." Two years later, she appeared in the David Cronenberg sci-fi film, eXistenZ.

Jennifer was slated to appear with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in director Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut (1999), but when she turned down a re-shoot (due to scheduling conflicts), Kubrick cut her part completely and recast another actress.

Despite this snub, her career continued to flourish in the new millennium. Jennifer, co-directed, co-produced and co-wrote the film The Anniversary Party (2001), in which she also starred.

Jennifer followed up with roles in Road to Perdition (2002), starring Tom Hanks, In the Cut (2003), starring Meg Ryan, Palindromes (2004), and The Jacket (2005).

Just discovered Jennifer Jason Leigh by  watching "The best little girl in the world" movie and she was a great little actress in that film and reminded me very much of Emma Watson.

Looked her up on imdb and saw that she is going to be in the movie Amityville: The Awakening (one of my favourites) :).
