David Bowie has passed away, just two days after his 69th birthday.

The legendary singer's Facebook page posted the tragic news Sunday evening, writing, " David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer."

The statement continued, "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."

No further details were released at this time.

Bowie was born David Robert Jones in England on January 8, 1947 and landed his first hit song at just 22-years-old with "Space Oddity"—a single that landed in the top five of the U.K. Singles Chart at the time of its release.

All throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Bowie became well-known for endlessly pushing boundaries during the glam-rock era, and even more famous for his androgynous alter ego named Ziggy Stardust.

During a 1994 interview with Rolling Stone, Bowie recalled Stardust with great fondness.

"I mean, he was half out of sci-fi rock and half out of the Japanese theater. The clothes were, at the time, simply outrageous," he shared.

"Nobody had seen anything like [that] before…Now I realize that from '72 through to about '76, I was the ultimate rock star. I couldn't have been more rock star."

Over the years, Bowie amassed two Grammy Awards, despite being nominated almost a dozen times.  In 1996, the late singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Labrinth star declined the royal honor of Commander of the British Empire in 2000, and then in 2003 he turned down the knighthood title.

His latest album, Blackstar, was released on his 69th birthday, and while album sales have yet to be tallied, Bowie has sold around 140 million albums throughout his illustrious career.

Tony Visconti, the producer for the album, spoke to the Los Angeles Times and the singer himself remained relatively quiet during promotion.

Bowie is survived by two children, Duncan Jones and Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones, as well as his wife Iman, whom he had been married to since April 24, 1992.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
