nice eds, play and Go!

interesting article i found

Have you guys read the very disturbing Wall Street Journal article? February 2008 Teen Vogue cover girl Ali Michael got booted out of Paris fashion week for being too fat! Ali debuted on the runways in Fall 2007. She walked 31 shows during Spring 2008 show season (Dior, Chanel, etc she even opened Lanvin) and for Fall 2008, she only walked 10 shows in New York, ZERO shows in London and Milan... and only 1 show in Paris. Why? According to Ali's mother, she got sick for trying to keep her weight down... now that she decided to get "healthier", she gained five pounds and everyone thought she got thick in the legs!

On Tuesday morning in Paris, as the fashion elite were gathering at the Balenciaga show, 17-year-old model Ali Michael was heading home to the U.S. far earlier than anticipated.

Miss Michael was last season's model du jour, and she looks wraithlike, with a still-developing body and a 23-inch waist. But this season, after gaining five pounds, Miss Michael was told by casting directors for the runway shows that her legs were too plump, according to her mother, Mary Ann Michael, who travels with her daughter to appointments and shows. And so, after doing a string of major supermodel shows in September, Miss Michael snared only the Yohji Yamamoto show in Paris this time around.

from wall street journal

the fact that this happened makes me sweat murder  :persuazn:

yeah kinda famous story

well but anyway she is a model so she has to be thin. why other models have to be thin but ali doesn't? i mean this kind of things happen to many models, paris fashion week choose just veeery thin models, if you want to stay in you have to stick to rules. that's fair

Nem, you have a point, that cant be denied

it is apparently a requirement for nearly 6 ft tall girls to wear

a size 2, or even a size zero

but the thing that really got to me was something that i wasnt able to scan

it was the teen vogue article where ali talks about her experiences.

she says that there were maybe one or 2 models that were naturally that skinny

and later mentions that in all her runway experience, there wasnt ONE model

she knew that didnt have some type of issue with food.

just think about that. NOT ONE girl that didnt have some type of food issue

so that means that all the girls we love

and worship in the threads, all have an eating disorder

to some degree

thousands, perhaps millions of girls worship every facet of these models lives,

and a huge portion of them are making themselves SICK.

is that admirable?

i recognize that the girls must meet standards

but if the standards mean that they must make themselves

sick, lose their periods, have their hair fall out

rob their young and growing bodies of the nutrients

they need to become physically fit and happy for their future lives-----

questions need to be asked of these 'standard makers'

this trend of emaciation has only been going on for

less than 10 yrs

believe me, a 6 ft tall girl who wears a size 6 is pretty freaking

skinny.

skinny girls look just as gorgeous in haute couture

as super skinny, concentration camp looking girls.

if all the girls who are killing themselves for fashion were to walk away from the business

how many would there be to model?? i bet the modelling population would be cut by 'round 75%

if you dont see a problem with that, if you feel that 'thats how the industry works, cest la vie'

then more power to ya.but we dont have to sit by the sidelines and let things go on

business as usual-we can speak with our money--

money is the language that the industry understands

and its the only way to make a change.

i see these ridiculous unattainable standards as a way to take power away from women,

starting

with the young.

i wait for the day when slim healthy girls take back the runways

and set their own standards-not jump through hoops like little monkeys

who are willing to give up the future of their health and happiness.

sermon over
