That's a terrible list.

Schindler's list at 8? It's not even the greatest Holocaust movie of all time, let alone part of the top 100 greatest movies.

The Sixth sense? E.T.? Star wars? LOTR 47 places higher than Blade Runner?

Also, they really should call it the 100 greatest American movies of all time, since apparently only US movies are eligable.

71 SAVING PRIVATE RYAN N/A

72 SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE N/A

73 BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID 50 -23

All three of these might be decent movies, but part of the 100 best that American cinema has ever produced? Lets be serious, please...

John Ford has one movie in the top 100 while Spielberg has FIVE?

Just one Howard Hawks as well. :(

No Terrence Malick, no Robert Altman, ...

But they do make room for Lucas' Star Wars, which was basically a rip-off of a Kurosawa Samurai epic, only with a sci-fi setting and lightsabers instead of Katanas.

And I won't even get into the inclusion of his greatly overrated American Graffiti.

TITANIC???????? Was this list compiled by 14 year olds back in 1997? I'm sorry for the people who love that movie, but it shouldn't even be in the top 1000 movies, let alone a top 100.

Just about the only thing they got right this time around is that Vertigo is finally in the top ten. And I suspect this is just because they realized what fools they made out of themselves last time around by putting it so low.

I have no problem with this. Read the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and then watch Blade Runner. You would be disappointed like I was. I have no problem with LOTR being higher than Blade Runner, but I thought the first movie was a bore. The second one was better. And all this reminds me of Clerks 2. All they ever did in LOTR was walk from one place to another.

Also, they really should call it the 100 greatest American movies of all time, since apparently only US movies are eligable.

Well it is the American Film Institute. I don't think foreign films are their domain. I could be wrong.

71 SAVING PRIVATE RYAN N/A

72 SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE N/A

73 BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID 50 -23

I abhor Saving Private Ryan. It was a decent movie. I don't know what is so special about it. Shawshank Redemption was okay but I'd replace it with the Shining (another Stephen King movie). The movies I would have rather seen on this list. Anything from Costner's pre-Waterworld days. The Untouchables. Field of Dreams. Dances with Wolves. Tombstone. I haven't seen Butch Cassidy :idk:

But they do make room for Lucas' Star Wars, which was basically a rip-off of a Kurosawa Samurai epic, only with a sci-fi setting and lightsabers instead of Katanas.

While I'm no huge fan of Star Wars, it's hard to say that one movie/story isn't a ripoff of another story. There are obviously influences that Mari Puzzo had when writing Godfather. That being said. I don't think Star Wars made the list for story. I think that it made the list because it revolutionized the special effects industry. Gladiator wasn't really an original movie either but I think that it should have been on the list.

There are some "errors". How can Ben Hur be at 100? And where's the Ten Commandments?

But everyone has different tastes in movies. I mean Big Momma's House 2 won the box office this year....somehow. It all depends who is a member in the AFI. Spielberg's probably voting all his crap in there. If the AFI is composed of people who have been in the industry then favors are being made to specific directors and so forth.

Other than Raging Bull being so high, I don't have huge problems with the list.

Star Wars definitely deserved to be there, and I'm glad to see The Shawshank Redemption made it (isn't it the second highest rated movie on IMDb?). Chinatown is a bit overrated and so is Silence of the Lambs. And I'm surprised to see Bringing Up Baby moved up. It's a fun movie but to put that on the list and nothing from Charlie Chaplin? I mean, c'mon! The Kid was hilarious! It's a shame nothing with Audrey Hepburn made it. Scrooge could be added, too: it's such a classic.

I don't think The Wizard of Oz should have been moved down. More people have probably seen it than the other top nine movies combined. Not to mention, what other movie has its own exhibit at the Smithsonian?

 I hated the Titanic, they should have stayed with the real life stories instead of that lame love triangle. That's 3 1/2 hours of my life I will never get back.
