  1. Keri-Anne Payne (born 9 December 1987) is a British swimmer, specialising in marathon open water swimming, and long-distance freestyle swimming in the pool. She is a two-time World 10 km Open Water champion, and an Olympic silver medallist. Payne was born in Johannesburg, South Africa to British parents, who registered her birth at the British Consulate. She started swimming aged four, and was noticed aged eight by British Swimming's national performance director Bill Sweetenham at a training camp in South Africa. As a result, the family returned to the UK to live in Heywood, Greater Manchester, when she was 13. Joining Stockport Metro, she has been coached since by Sean Kelly. Having broken British junior 800m freestyle record in 2002, Payne's central financial support was cut after she failed to win a medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. As a result, Kelly suggested that she tried open water swimming, allowing her to access additional central funding. She represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 200m and 400m individual medley swimming events as well as the 10 km open water event, in which was placed second and won a silver medal for Great Britain. At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, held in Rome, Payne won the 10km swim. She finished first in a time of two hours, one minute and 37.1 seconds. In 2011 in Shanghai, Payne reclaimed the World Championship in the 10 km Open Water event, becoming in the process the first British athlete in any sport to confirm qualification for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Payne took part in the 10 km swimming in the London 2012 Olympics and finished fourth, four seconds behind the winner. Payne trained at British Swimming's Intensive Training Centre at Stockport's Grand Central Pools. There she meet fellow swimmer David Carry, whom she married on 15 September 2012 in Aberdeen. The couple lived in Heywood, Greater Manchester, but in light of Carry's retirement from competitive swimming and in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, after their wedding they relocated to the Scottish capital where she joined Warrender Baths Club.
  2. A brief history about me DOB: 24th September 1980 Height: 165cm Weight: 62kg I started cycling about the same time as I started to walk, as a result of my Father being a keen cyclist. I used to go on youth hostelling trips with my family from the age of six onwards. I started grass track racing with my twin brother Alex at the age of nine, as a hobby in the summer months. I apparently started to show potential at thirteen years old. Grass track cycling is a fading tradition, however it does help to develop bike handling skills and stamina. I was talent spotted at the age of sixteen, by the assistant national track team coach at the time, Marshall Thomas. However despite his efforts to encourage me to train, I decided to concentrate on my education for the time being. While I was studying at University, I started to train more constructively for track sprinting. I was hugely inspired by the Olympic gold medal success of Jason Queally, at the Sydney Olympic Games. In 2001 and 2002 I competed at the European Championships and later that season at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. I was very lucky to be sent to the UCI (Union du Cyclisme Internationale) World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland for two seasons in the lead up to the Athens Olympics. I was trained by Frederic Magné, a seven times World Champion for France. I currently live and train in Manchester with the rest of the elite Great Britain Track Team. I won my first World Championship title in 2005 in LA. Education St Mary’s Primary School in Stotfold. Etonbury Middle School in Stotfold. Fearnhill School in Letchworth, left aged 18 with A-levels in Chemistry, Biology and Geography University of Northumbria, graduated in 2002 with a 2.1 Bsc (hons) in Sports and Exercise Science. In 2008 the University of Northumbria awarded a Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law (CDL) Official Site
  3. Jessica Ennis, MBE (born 28 January 1986 in Sheffield) is a British track and field athlete specialising in multi-eventing disciplines and 100m hurdles. A member of the City of Sheffield Athletic Club, she is the former European and world heptathlon champion and the former world indoor pentathlon champion. She is the current British national record holder for both the heptathlon and the indoor pentathlon. Background One of two daughters born to Vinnie Ennis and Alison Powell, Jessica Ennis has a younger sister called Carmel. Her father, originally from Jamaica, is a self-employed painter and decorator; her mother, a social worker, was born in Derbyshire. Neither of her parents was particularly athletic, but her father did some sprinting at school whilst her mother favoured the high jump. They introduced her to athletics by taking her to a 'Start:Track' event at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium during the 1996 school summer holidays. In later years she joked that her parents took her to the event because "I think my mum and dad wanted me out of the house!" She won her first athletics prize there – a pair of trainers. More importantly, it was there that she met the man who was to become her coach, Toni Minichiello. She took to the sport immediately and joined the City of Sheffield Athletic Club the following year, aged eleven. In November 2000, aged fourteen, she won the Sheffield Federation for School Sports Whitham Award for the best performance by a Sheffield athlete at the National Schools Championships, where she won the high jump competition. Growing up in the Highfield area of Sheffield, Ennis attended Sharrow Primary School and King Ecgbert School in Dore, where she sat her GCSEs and stayed on in the sixth form to gain three A-Levels, before going on to study Psychology at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2007 with a 2:2. Ennis lives in Sheffield with her chocolate Labrador Myla. She got engaged to long-term boyfriend Andy Hill on Christmas Eve 2010. She is a fan of Sheffield United. She writes a column for The Times newspaper and is a patron for businessman Barrie Wells's sports foundation. Ennis is also an Ambassador for the Jaguar Academy of Sport. She has been involved in advertising campaigns for Aviva, Powerade, BP, Adidas, Omega watches and Olay 'Essentials', and was featured on the cover of the August 2012 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine.
